Wellwood Will Most Likely Explore Free Agency Says Agent

Kyle Wellwood's agent Mike Liut told the Province today:

"I don't think there's any question that Kyle will get to July 1."

Ya don't say. The Province states that Wellwood would like to be in a position where he can be the team's #2 center. Not happening here. The Canucks have a beautiful problem of a wealth at the center position with Henrik Sedin, Ryan Kesler, and hopefully Cody Hodgson. That leaves Wellwood out of the picture, as Mike Gillis hopes to have youth served next season as he stated in his interview after the Canucks were ousted from the playoffs.

It took an arbitration case to keep Wellwood here last summer, where he was awarded $1.2 million for the 2009-10 season, after scoring 18 goals and 9 assists in the previous season. This season he responded with 14 goals and 11 assists. That is nearly the same amount of production with about the same amount of ice time given. Of course Wellwood can score more points in a top-6 and less defensive-checking role. But that will not be here. That will be on a team starving for top 6 center depth. I love his skill-set and always have, but it is time for an upgrade at the #3 center position. I want to see more grit with the fancy, know what I mean?

No matter what Welly, thanks for your contributions. You showed more guts than your mates on several nights and it will not be forgotten. Just remember who showed you how to play 2-way hockey.

I always liked Wellwood and felt that he has alot of potential but with H Sedin and Kesler at center there’s just no room. Wish him the best of luck though.

He’s a like-able guy no doubt. Watch him sign in Atlanta….

I was thinking there too.

Or maybe the Leafs? Burkie needs a good offensive talent.

You have to admit the kismet and/or irony would be off the charts…

They are also things he plans to change.

"I'm not going to talk next year, I can already tell you that, on the morning of games," Luongo said. "Sometimes, I just think some of the questions are a bit absurd. It's just something you don't need on game day. You want to be focused on the game and stopping the puck." J.Botch' 05/14/10

If I was Woody I would tell Burke and the Leafs to go fuck themselves. to be honest, with all the fat jokes he has endured here (and there), he should tell the Canucks and the fans to fuck themselves too. I mean that in a broad sense. He isn’t in the position to do so per se……but you get my point? He needs to play on a team that is under the radar.

Maybe Columbus?

I do agree…he handled it all with pretty good humor though…

fuck

if they had Wellwood and Kane on a line together, I wouldn’t even bother trying to hide my erection. and if they were to draft Nino in two weeks, it’d be one of these:

I could see him signing in Columbus

There are two sides to this for me:

1. On one side, I think about 2 seasons worth of half-assed play, out of shape Well-fed and just terrible hockey. Sweet dangles though!
2. On the other side, Wellfed has consistently stepped it up during the playoffs. For two years, he has looked like the only player on the ice who actually gave a fuck, besides SOB this year.

So, and I mean this in the nicest and meanest way possible: Fuck off Well-fed, and thanks for being a shining gem during the playoffs.

You gotta give him credit for his 2-way play though..regular seasons too.

Welly feeding pucks to Rick Nash? Could make for a pretty good combo

Good Riddance

I think some of you have been blinded by his playoff performance. It took him 82 regular season games to warm. Seem a little long for me. And I remember saying, “nice fucking giveaway Wellwood!” too many times.

Well… as a team we did fine in the regular season. As a team we did poorly in the playoffs. So I would make the argument that letting go someone who is good when the team is bad, but bad when the team is good (and therefore don’t really need him), I would say….. huh?

by Beantown Canuck on Jun 9, 2010 7:19 AM PDT up reply actions

That being said, I would also let him go, simply because of the Hodgson factor. And if I were him, I ’d want to leave because of that factor as well.

well, i guess it’s bye bye Welly. we will definitely miss your amazing effort, your crazy attempts at scoring, and calling you so many nicknames.

Good luck to Welly, wherever he ends up. He’s got the skills, just not the mindset, IMO. Reminds me of something Harry Neale said about Michel Petit, “He’s got the tools, just no toolbox.”

I like wellwood, but… We all love Welly after the season cuz he finds some compete level at the end. However all thru the season we all bitch about him and his lack of fire and emotion. He also seems to be completely devoid of personality; you never hear anybody in the room say anything about him good or bad, which means he probably sits there and doesn’t do anything to piss people off but also doesn’t do anything to fire them up. Good luck to you wellwood, you’ll have a long NHL career of unreached potential and leave no memories beyond unwarranted fat jokes and third line obscurity. Post hockey I’m sure you’ll have a pleasant career selling real estate or managing a jimmy pattison division.

if wellwood was 4 inches taller

and 30lbs heavier i’d be sad about this. i won’t be disappointed if the canucks wind up resigning him but i think the team should upgrade there. none of the kids coming up is going to be a significant improvement over him this year either, but in the long term they definitely will be so it’s time.

also, with welly and demo gone the canucks will have to find some new shootout wizards.

by bitterguy on Jun 9, 2010 11:29 AM PDT reply actions

I’m sure he’s by now 30lbs heavier from when Chicago knocked us out…

Umm… right. We have no 3rd line center to replace him with other than a highly touted Jr. player with known injury problems. Awesome. We also could use a better 4th line center. Great thinking. Not that Welly is the best thing since the t-bone steak was invented or anything, but he’s a good third line center who can pinch hit on the top two lines in the case of emergency. As contingency planning goes that is pretty good.

Obviously if the ’nucks are targeting a RFA/UFA center somewhere or have someone else in their sights then letting him go is not a bad call, but if it is only to give Hodgson the spot color me unimpressed.

Really?

This doesn’t impress you, that’s understandable, but Kyle Wellwood does? The guy is a very mediocre player. You can get what he gives, and probably more, for less money. Wellwood is terrible vastly more often than he is good. Don’t let a couple good games in the playoffs fool you. He is good with the puck, I can admit that, but really it’s pretty rare when that translates into a decent scoring chance.
