SKA Shows Kovalchuk The Money / Game 5 Aftermath
-Jumping on the links early today because I just got an email from Yankee that stated that the SKA of the Russian League have offered Ilya Kovalchuk a whopping 3-year/42 million contract. Here is the Russian site that is breaking this news, and here is the translation. Wow. Historic. Insanity.
-Also in that article it reads that 45-year old Czech legend Dominik Hasek has signed a 1 year deal with Spartak.
-Chris Pronger may have played in one of his worst games ever last night, being on the ice for 6 of Chicago's 7 goals and finishing a -5. But the entire Philly team laid an egg and couldn't keep up to the Hawks. Post game Pronger declared himself "day-to-day with hurt feelings", in reference to getting booed by the Hawks faithful. Pronger had all but silenced Dustin Byfuglien both physically and on the scoresheet until Game 5 where Buffy finally pushed back. Wow, a monster game by the beast. 2 goals and 4 points and a slew of hits, including one on Pronger that sent him sprawling. Don't see that happen to Pronger very often.
-Lots of celebrities at the United Center last night including the regular Vince Vaughn, Michelle Pfeiffer and even Michael Jordan.
-Quotes post game (Globe and Mail). They left out an in-game quote from Pronger to Thomas Kopecky telling him that his breath stinks.
-Puck Daddy's 3 stars of Game 5. The boxscore of the game is worth a look too. Hossa was a -3?? Huh. Ville Leino continues his marvelous play with 3 assists in game 5 and now 3rd on the rookie playoff scoring record list with 19 points in 18 games.
-Added: Guy Boucher has turned down the head coaching position for the Columbus Blue Jackets. I don't know where they had Manitoba Moose head coach Scott Arniel in the pecking order but we'll soon find out. (h/t missy)
-Added: Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford is not feeling so optimistic that a deal can be reached with UFA Ray Whitney. (TSN)
-Added: Ever wonder what Jordin Tootoo does in the summer? Probably not, but he's willing to show you. Tootoo is very active on Twitter.

I thought the KHL was having money issues or something? Yeesh, that’s a rediculous contract.
"Playin hurt, baby that don't faze me. I don't got time for pain. The only pain I've got time for is the pain I put on fools who don't know what time it is!"
The league as a whole is. None of the teams are making money. But some of the owners are rich oligarchs who like to look important, and others understand that doing stuff like this for national pride is good for staying in the government’s good books (and that in the end is how they make money).

you sure link throwing up links, eh? oh well, makes my life easier....
btw, a NY Times article gives SBNation some love. no mention in particular about any of the NHL blogs, but it does talk about those new regional pages.

Still waiting for the Stanley Cup to go to the Canucks.....
Well, I got the email from Yankee late last night and I wanted to post it before anyone else did.
So about this Kovalchuk thing, many people are waiting to see if the offer is legit. A second Russian paper reported the same thing this morning. It could be a 3-year/40 million deal with bonuses pushing it to $42 million.

I tweeted the following to Dmitry Chesnokov of ‘Canucks are on the list of teams where Kovy might sign’ fame:
@dchesnokov Why did you include #Canucks as possible for Kovy? Cap situation not great. Pure speculation or informed speculation? Thx!
He replied:
@thospratt a bit of both with the emphasis on the latter. It’s a great organization where he would fit well IMHO

right, “he’d fit in well”. But his contract won’t. It’s unfounded for him to say that. There’s no rumor of Ilya coming here, it’s just that some of these prognosticators make shit up because they think the guy fits here. Well, not in our cap world.

Yes. I was a bit disappointed Chesnokov wrote that with such little behind it. I would expect that from others, but usually the Puck Daddy crew are a lot more grounded

Well, everybody makes “mistakes.” What if Gillis is by some freak of nature inquiring about him? You never know with that guy, like the 2 year Sundin offer for example. Had Sundin played 2 years it would have screwed the team to sign the Sedins for example.

When did Douchey McElbows-pronger become so like-able in his press meets? The strength of my hate for him is wavering on his sharp jabs back to the press.

I hope that the offer is legit, and the story is true.
The KHL emerging as a strong competitor to NHL would mean the end of the NHL’s monopoly on elite hockey. A monopoly is never a good thing, and whole game would benefit from a more competitive international hockey environment.

I agree… sort of.
I don’t think the KHL in its current form is set either a) to be a legit competitor to the NHL; or b) to be less of a monopoly than the NHL. See Beantown’s comment above, but basically the ownership in Russian hockey (and other sports) is pretty effed up and very politicized. Until that ownership gets diluted, probably through making it a pan-European league (with team in Sweden, Finland, Germany, Czech Republic, etc.) it will remain a very dubious league.
But I do agree that a “rival” European league would add some spice to international hockey tournaments and help the development of the game. Some sort of common rules/regulations and transfer agreements would have to be worked out between the NHL and KHL though.

I completely agree with your post, this is just the beginning. Politics and corruption is part of big business in Russia, including hockey, of course. But it is a start, and, as you said, it would be nice to see a pan-European league, as a counter-point to the NHL.

Some reports out there are wondering if the Kovalchuk SKA deal is false. Who knows. We’ll find out in a couple weeks though

Speaking of the Chicago-Philadelphia series, is this going to game seven, or what?
I think it will, and I am taking the Flyers in seven.

I still think Chicago is going to win in 6. I would like to see another game though, it’s been a great series to watch.

After what I saw last night
I am even more convinced that the Hawks are by far the better team and that the Flyers only chance of success is when the Hawks take their foot off the gas. I don’t think that will happen in a game where they have the chance to win the cup. The Hawks are too good when they are playing their best. Even last night you saw the Hawks dominate the Flyers then relax and let the Flyers score. A 60 minute effort from the Hawks and they win the cup.

the Hawks can almost score at will can’t they? Freaky stuff. The Flyers didn’t seem to have enough intensity last night. I know they can match Chicago’s intensity or nearly do so, but last night was a fail.
If Philly scores the first goal then they can slow the pace of the game down. They are good at that. But when they fall behind and start opening it up they are doomed.
by Sean Zandberg on Jun 7, 2010 12:11 PM PDT up reply actions
Yup
When they try to open it up, Pronger’s skating ability (or lack thereof) becomes a huuuge liability. Just like whenever he was on the ice during the Olympics. But when they can shut it down, Pronger doesn’t have to skate that much and is way more effective.
Let’s see if he can get over his day-to-day hurt feelings. His pressers are pretty hilarious to watch.
