Kyle Wellwood and Ryan Johnson to become UFAs tomorrow. No talks going on with Canucks.
Canucks also intend to cut ties with D Willie Mitchell, also bound for free agency tomorrow.

Who was the Canucks best player in the last couple games vs Chicago??? Chubby.
Chubby and Balls brought it every day. Balls…too many injuries. Chubby…a soft heart that doesn’t handle ambiguity well. Both of them, once in the lineup and they knew they were in the lineup did nothing but produce. Tough losses.
As for Mitchell…well, you’ve got Keith Ballard don’t you?? And they Canucks have been very busy telling us how great he is going to be and how they are just a couple pieces away from taking it over the top. Ballard is it! He is THE MAN! What a load of crap…
If Gillis lands another quality defenseman tomorrow, then it may be worth it. Taking nothing away from Mitchell, but he hasn’t skated in 6 months and may be a different type of player when he gets back. If we get another guy along with Ballard who is also durable and younger, than it may be worth it.
We survived losing Ohlund, we’ll survive losing Mitchell. I just hope he goes East so we don’t need to see him often.

We didn’t win a cup after losing Ohlund… what exactly is your standard for surviving?
by Beantown Canuck on Jun 30, 2010 7:30 PM PDT up reply actions
We didn’t win a Cup with Mitchell here either.
I mean the roof didn’t fall under. The old Mitchell may have helped on a few goals against Chicago, but not all of them. He was made a pylon a time or two the year before against them either.
I love Mitchell as much as the next guy. He won’t be easy to replace. But let’s keep things in perspective.

I was reading somewhere how it’s so easy to scrutinize defensive mistakes by defencemen. But the Canucks as a team failed so many times. So did Lou.

Not trying to pile on the guy, but IF he isn’t back at his old self, I will gladly take two new, more durable guys so Salo (our least durable!) isn’t suddenly our #1.
I wish Mitchell nothing but the best which could be a slot with the Caps. He’ll have PLENTY of chances to give Malkin a Toews-esque knock.

nah, that’s a keeper. i’m convinced he’s one of the few best dmen to ever play for the canucks.

Mitchell is a better shut-down guy than Ballard is, unfortunately. I doubt he’d play for less than what he got last year, and too many bonuses (for games played) can give us cap trouble in 2011-2012 if he’s healthy and roster depth trouble this year if he’s not.
I like Wellwood – especially during the playoffs for the last two seasons where he seems to have found his heart – but the consistency just hasn’t been there. Johnson, too; but with him there’s a question of how long he’ll be in the line-up for.
It’s why I wouldn’t have minded seeing Salo moved: he’s an excellent defenceman, but only when he’s healthy. And any game could be the one that puts him out for another week, and you’re stuck playing five defenders for whatever game he was injured in.
With these three losses, we are losing some skill in different areas, but hopefully bringing in reliability and predictability; gaining assets we know how to use without crossing our fingers.
October’s going to be interesting!
damn
I agree, i’m sad to sem them all go. But Hodgson needs a roster spot. And Schroeder and Shirokov, hope they improve come training time.
Too many people bitched about my name, so it is now.......William......HOORAY!!! :)

Problem with Mitch is that he isn’t going to start skating for 2 more weeks. What the heck is MG supposed to do? Wait for him? All the UFA’s will be gone by then. Must be hard to take Mitchell at his word right now with July 1 staring you in the face.
other than Mitchell’s hurt pride, i don’t see a problem with Mitchell and the Canucks working on a deal to resign Willie. This just gives everyone involved more flexibility, so not all is lost!

Skill, but also heart on a sleeve pls
I used to hate Mitchell when he covered Bert for the Wild, but man, having him man the area in front of the crease is as close to us having a Lidstrom or Niedermeyer out there – you know he will clear it if possible. The fact that he is BC boy who wears his heart out but speaks and acts like the consummate pro – makes the team more likeable than in past years.
Having said that, Gillis, please do NOT OVERreach for D or third-liners or whatever tomorrow – there are no Lidstroms out there. But do feel free to stock us up on Ladds, a more agile Mitchell clone, Brind’Amour clone, or more guys with weird names (Glass? Sweatt? Funk?) who WANTS to WIN HERE, WIN NOW. Our team is not that far, but man, we need people who plays like they want the Cup, day in, day out.
No more “talents” like Demo. Our team is past the point of stocking talent and discounting heart over skill. To win the Cup we need both, so as productive as Wellfed was in the playoffs, he never showed “IT” to us fans like Mitchell does, so, so long Chubby! So, we ask you now Gillis – please make sure whatever you sign tomorrow brings IT like there’s no tomorrow everyday!

Mitch, Wellfed, and Johnny
You will all be missed. Especially Mitch, your long stick has saved our asses several times (cue innuendos from Section, VancityDan, Seanberg, Missy, Yankee, Smo, eightyseven, perhaps even yoata).

you’re flagged because of multiple links I think. Whatevs. Shit man, why don’t you make a fan post of this???? It’s awesome! It doesn’t deserve to be buried in a comments section

I'm just happy
you remembered me.
Like said before, if this means getting that defenseman we so need, it’d be less of a pill to swallow.
Just when Welly started to grow on me :(

So, what exactly is Mike Gillis up to?
Well
You do now.

Can’t say I’m too surprised that these 3 won’t be back… I wish them all the best since they’re really likable people.

Well….I am going to impatiently wait for someone else to sign Mitchell. It’s gonna suck. Is there any chance teams wait for 2 weeks before signing him?
by Sean Zandberg on Jun 30, 2010 9:34 PM PDT up reply actions
All depends on dominoes fall starting tomorrow. Once the Hamhuis’s of the world make up their minds, shouldn’t take too long after that. I suspect he (Mitchell) will be signed somewhere in two weeks.

Maybe so, maybe not. Mitchell is going to have to accept the offer he likes, too, which should give you faint hope. Some teams are going to be scared of his injury (lord knows I am) and will want proof he’s up and running before a contract appears. But what if the only sizable off comes from, say, Edmonton looking to replace Souray? How much does Willie want to play for a rebuilding team?
Plus, you know, Vancouver’s an awfully good team that could give a good shut-down guy a lot of ice time…
Even faint hope is hope.
and tomorrow, NYR parts with an even better player :D
