Around The NHL: The Day Before The Day Before...

  • Update (10:00 PM): According to allhockey.ru, JP Barry, agent for Sergei Gonchar is saying the negotiations between his client and the Penguins is deadlocked. It looks more and more like Gonchar will hit the UFA market. This puts serious pressure on the Pens to sign Dan Hamhuis, whom they still have exclusive signing rights to. Those conversations are ongoing, but time is running out. The Pens could end up with neither defenceman on July 1st. I'd laugh. However, Rob Rossi from the Pittsburgh Tribune writes:

Early Tuesday I sent his agent a text asking about reports that Hamhuis desires to play in Canada, preferably Western Canada. (Hamhuis' lives in British Columbia, Canada). Here is the agent's response, which I received late Tuesday evening:

"Untrue -- Dan remains very open minded with respect to playing in the East versus the West or Canada versus the United States."

  • Update (4:30 PM): The Canadiens have traded the enigmatic and controversial Sergei Kostitsyn and future cosiderations to the Predators for goalie Dan Ellis, Dustin Boyd and future considerations. (TSN) Kostitsyn and Boyd are restricted free agents while Ellis in a UFA. Is this the Habs' goaltending duo? Price and Ellis? Is this going to impress Habs fans?
  • The Edmonton Oilers have waived Ethan Moreau, Robert Nilsson and Patrick O'Sullivan, so tweeteth The Hockey News on Twitter. Some intriguing yet enigmatic talent sitting right there. I would take Ethan Moreau on the Canucks. I've said that before. But at minimal cost. *EDIT: Other players currently on the waiver wire are: Todd Fedoruk (Lightning), Nathan Oystric (Ducks), and Donald Brashear,Aaron Voros, Patrick Rissmiller (Rangers). - Spector's Hockey
  • Sad tweet from Eric Duhatschek this morning: If Sutter had just kept Jokinen and his expiring contract, it would have saved the $4 million over 4 years to make Kotalik go away. UGH!
  • The Penguins have talked to Dan Hamhuis, telling him about the joys of playing in Pittsburgh. And really, there are a lot of joys there. You get your picture taken with Mario Lemieux at some point. And it's creepy. They should get an indication today of whether or not Hamhuis and his agent want to talk contract with them.
  • The Canadiens have signed Benoit Pouliot to a 1-year $1.35 million deal. There was speculation that they were going to let him go. Remember, Pouliot was who the Habs got from the Wild in exchange for Latendresse.
  • The Capitals have extended qualifying offers to all 9 of their RFA's: Eric Fehr, Tomas Fleischmann, Jeff Schultz and Boyd Gordon and prospects Jay Beagle, Chris Bourque, Andrew Gordon, Patrick McNeill, Zach Miskovic
  • Tomas Kaberle is reluctant to leave Toronto. Nothing is certain, Tomas.
  • More updates as they come. Feel free to add more news in the comments section if you find it. It will most likely get posted here on the main page.

Dialogue between Penguins and Dan Hamhuis continues. Not carved in stone by any means, but odds favor Hamhuis going to July 1 UFA.

With Volchenkov possibly staying in Ottawa next year, I would want to shop the market too if I were Hammer. He and Paul Martin might turn out to be the best available D at the draft.

by missy on Jun 30, 2010 9:16 AM PDT up reply actions

Damien Cox

good ol’ rival of PPP thinks it’s very, very strange a 29 goal scorer won the Hart.

I asked him if he also thought it was strange when Forsberg won it with also 29 goals.
I honestly can’t believe someone’s questioning Henrik’s worthiness.

Yeah, when your linemates (trent klatt, anson carter, alex burrows) become amazing goal scorers, but are 3rd line players on any other line, chances are you’re pretty damn good.

by SteveNux on Jun 29, 2010 3:47 PM PDT up reply actions

Don't get too down...

…on Burrows. Klatt didn’t do all that well with the twins; really, only Carter, Burrows and Samuelsson are the only players that could take full advantage of the Sedins’ abilities. The running joke about a pylon scoring 30 goals with the Sedins is just that.

by Thursday on Jun 29, 2010 8:19 PM PDT up reply actions

I’m a big fan of Burrows, especially since I’m a ball-hockey player. But, Burrows isn’t going to score 35 goals without Henriks amazing passes. That’s the point I was making to counter Damien Cox’s argument that Henrik is only a 29 goal scorer.

by SteveNux on Jun 30, 2010 9:54 AM PDT up reply actions

I know

I think that is one of the main reasons he DID win. He was like King Midas – everyone he passed to turned to GOALLLLLLLL!……d

by Semi_Colon on Jun 30, 2010 10:44 AM PDT up reply actions

I wish! Remember how many players were used with the twins until they could find someone who worked with them? Pyatt, Bernier, Linden, Naslund, Klatt…

by Thursday on Jun 30, 2010 11:30 AM PDT up reply actions

Well to be fair

They haven’t really been a force until the last few years, and that’s when they’ve started to magically turn people into goal scorers…

"Playin hurt, baby that don't faze me. I don't got time for pain. The only pain I've got time for is the pain I put on fools who don't know what time it is!"

by Semi_Colon on Jun 30, 2010 11:33 AM PDT up reply actions

Those last few years included Bernier and Naslund, though. And Carter’s year with them preceded Linden, Naslund and Pyatt. They need a player who can play in a complimentary style to theirs to get their full potential: uber-opportunists who can get to the net and have quick wrists and an aggressive demeanour.

On the plus side, it looks like we’ve got a couple of them with Samuelsson working out so well with them last season. But even that took until he got pissed off with his non-selection to Sweden (thankyouthankyouthankyou) and stepped up his aggression a notch.

Burrows isn’t a natural choice to be on any team’s top line without those Sedins, though; I’ll certainly agree with that!

by Thursday on Jun 30, 2010 12:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Didn’t Pyatt have 23 goals with them? That’s pretty good for Pretty Eyes.

by marcness52 on Jun 30, 2010 10:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Yep, and 16 the next year. Thing is, almost half of those were on the power play rather than even strength. Burrows, on the other hand, had more goals short handed than a man up!

Don’t get me wrong! The Sedins improve anyone they play with; but to get the most benefit from (and to) them, they need someone who fits their style, and that’s not just anyone.

by Thursday on Jul 1, 2010 2:22 AM PDT up reply actions

And I think Cox is no one’s friend. He’s just an all around ass
