Nice. Obviously, this means we had a great draft.

by Sean Zandberg on Jun 28, 2010 2:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Of course I like a little experience

But where are we going to get it? The UFA pool doesn’t really have too many D-men with experience, hell the only “quality” one that’s been past 2 rounds is Volchenkov, and everyone’s clamoring that he’s too expensive. Guys with experience tend to be hard to come by. We’re not going to walk into a goldmine.

Of course, if we landed Volchenkov for a reasonable rate I’d be pretty happy

I’m down with Staal, he sounds like a pretty decent 1-2 guy. Maybe a good pair with Ehrhoff? Put Edler with Ballard, and Salo/Mitchell/SOB/Bieksa/Rome/Alberts for your last pairing?

That’s a deep defense core, someone would have to go. Maybe Bieksa for decent third liner?

How about an inflated, long-term RFA offer?

Like 7-10 years at $5 mil or so? I know it’s a ridiculous thought…but if you overpay now, you will likely be underpaying by the end of the deal.

I know this will never happen… just some wild speculation to keep me entertained the next few days.

I don't know...

$5mil would mean a 1st, 2nd and 3rd round pick as well in compensation…I wouldn’t want to give up our whole draft next year as well…

$4.5 would only be a first and a third

"Playin hurt, baby that don't faze me. I don't got time for pain. The only pain I've got time for is the pain I put on fools who don't know what time it is!"

by Semi_Colon on Jun 28, 2010 10:27 AM PDT up reply actions

If indeed, it is a "chasm"

I’d be going the route of talking to Sather and seeing if we could work out a trade, rather than an offer sheet.

With Staal, Edler and now Ballard, we’d have a solid d-core moving forward regardless of what happens with Hoff, Salo, etc.

So I’d be calling Slats and seeing what we would need to add to Bieksa (for salary purposes he’d have to go) to get a deal done. And I’d be willing to include a 1st and pretty much any prospects not named Hodgson. And maybe even him.

Gotta play 'em, might as well win 'em.

by Jevant on Jun 28, 2010 10:33 AM PDT up reply actions

As per my comment below, forgot about the compensation issue – and I fully agree that a trade makes more sense. Bieksa, a 1st and a prospect would work great for me. Or Bieksa and Schneider? I dunno – now I’m just rosterbating without thinking things through. I need more coffee.

by vancitydan on Jun 28, 2010 1:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Even though it is Sather

I don’t see him even considering taking Bieksa for Staal, even with a lot of bling thrown in to spice it up. Staal is probably going to be a stud, and unless Sather is a complete idiot (yes I know, possible) I don’t see him trading him away for a guy like Bieksa…

"Playin hurt, baby that don't faze me. I don't got time for pain. The only pain I've got time for is the pain I put on fools who don't know what time it is!"

In my theory

Bieksa is merely to help with the salary crunch. The picks and prospects would be determinative.

by Jevant on Jun 28, 2010 10:43 AM PDT up reply actions

Good point

Had a total brain cramp and forgot about that pesky “compensation” issue! I was just trying to think of an amount that Sather would be unlikely to match. Still, if it was a 1st and a 3rd I would hands down do that for Staal.

And we still have SOB as an RFA, so we have 8 d-men on one-way deals under contract or with rights we control. We already should be thinking about moving one even if we don’t get another in somewhere else, but if we do get another, we absolutely must move either SOB or Bieksa and possibly both. Definitely Bieksa if we take on salry.

for Marc Staal, you’d make it work.

by Passive Voice on Jun 28, 2010 10:59 AM PDT up reply actions

Agreed. While he’s not a true blue-chip defenseman, at least not at Drew Doughty/Keith/Weber level, he’s young, he’s going to develop, and at worst he’s a No2 in the future.

If you THINK you have a chance with Staal, you gotta go for it. Opportunities to sign young D-men don’t show up…… ever.

by Vancouverguy on Jun 28, 2010 1:33 PM PDT up reply actions

If there’s a D we want from NYR, I don’t think it’s Staal, should be Ryan McDonagh, a first-round draft pick couple years back.

Ryan McDonagh may not even wanna sign with NYR - NY Post L.B.
" Rangers, who conducted organizational meetings last week, are believed keenly interested in signing Ryan McDonagh, whose rights they acquired from Montreal in the Scott Gomez deal, but the Wisconsin defenseman has a fair amount of leverage as he awaits an offer.

McDonagh, who turns 21 next month, would play his senior year for the Badgers if he does not turn pro. If he remains unsigned through next year, McDonagh would become an unrestricted free agent as of Aug. 15, 2011.

Chances are, then, if the 6-foot-1, 215-pound McDonagh, who is regarded as a proficient, stay-at-home type physically ready for the NHL, does not sign this summer, he will not sign at all with the Blueshirts.

And though it would seem necessary for Sather to offer the Entry Level max, we’re hearing McDonagh will make his decision based less on the contract and more on his perception of the Rangers’ program."

http://hfboards.ca/showthread.php?t=771339

Basically, Sather’s reputation is such that even college kids are worried that signing with the Rangers would stunt their development, especially their D (see Matt Gilroy). Give them SOB or Bieksa if Sather asks, we’ll develop kids here! We have sleep doctors and psychologists here!

And I know the post is from Feb 2010. But as of today, McDonagh still hasn’t signed. Ask for him Gillis!

by nucklinBadger on Jun 28, 2010 10:58 AM PDT up reply actions

Just a little background, he’s Montreal’s 1st round draft pick from 2007, 12th overall. Traded to NYR in the Gomez trade, if he doesn’t sign a pro contract this year, he can head back to college for his final year and become a free agent next summer at the age of 21/22. Meaning if Sather can’t be sure he can sign him (or pisses a college kid off more somehow), he would have let a first round draft pick walk for free.

So if we can do a trade-and-sign, at the max he will be on an entry-level contract for three years, which should fit our budget nicely, unlike Staal.

And yes, 2007 is the Patrick White draft unfortunately.

by nucklinBadger on Jun 28, 2010 11:10 AM PDT up reply actions

by Jevant on Jun 28, 2010 11:26 AM PDT up reply actions

The only thing is

We need quality D-men immediately. Getting a couple of kids who we can develop would be good, but we can’t just get kids and wait for them to develop, because we might be out of time when they do.

"Playin hurt, baby that don't faze me. I don't got time for pain. The only pain I've got time for is the pain I put on fools who don't know what time it is!"

Lombardi, Prust, Vandermeer ( traded to reacquire Prust) and a first round pick ( PHX selected Brandon Gormley) for one lousy year of Jokinen, 23 games of a terrible Kotalik and injured Higgins.

What the Flames are left with is a buyout of Kotalik – $1m against the cap for the next 4 years.

I like Tucker’s grittiness and he has some skill. But he’s an injury waiting to happen these days.

Speaking of Leafs: they didn’t qualify John Mitchell. He’s a great grindy player. But apparently the negotiations will continue

by Sean Zandberg on Jun 28, 2010 2:41 PM PDT reply actions

Now…even with a Leaf aversion, I do like him.

He would look good on line 3.

Fourth line, maybe.

Ryan Malone??? Anyone? $4.5 million cap hit. Could fill in on line on occasion and on the power play units. Let’s flog Bieksa for Malone

by Sean Zandberg on Jun 28, 2010 2:54 PM PDT reply actions

A fifty point man for $6 million? Hmm… I think the Rangers are trying to pick him up, aren’t they?

by Thursday on Jun 28, 2010 2:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Yup. For another what, five years? It’s going to be a coin flip if he plays 70 games next year, never mind three (or four, or five) years from now.

by Thursday on Jun 28, 2010 3:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Malone would be a great pick up, maybe he’d play more games if you reduced his ice time and put him on the third line. Cap hit’s a little high though for a third liner.

by Sandwich76 on Jun 28, 2010 3:35 PM PDT up reply actions

He’d have to tone down his game a little to survive a full season, I think. Still, he does have the skill to fill in on any line for short stretches and pull in some power play time. He’s pretty much what we wanted Bernier to be.

Saw them in Vancouver a few years ago. They were great live. The second half of the set was all instrumental.

Really, I wonder why teams don’t have scouts heavily scouting their local hockey teams. You think that would be cheaper than flying people to Sweden too.

I know… the local boys that they want just aren’t available when it’s their turn to draft!

i mean, i accept that we’re not gonna land every Evander Kane and Ryan Johansen, but…

by Passive Voice on Jun 28, 2010 5:18 PM PDT up reply actions

yeah it’s a bit baffling, I mean we didn’t even pick up one token BC boy at the draft this year. Suck.

by Sandwich76 on Jun 28, 2010 5:37 PM PDT reply actions

This little guy. Third-most points on his team, as a 17-yo dman. Only problem is you couldn’t leave him alone in a room with Welly, cuz he’s like five, maybe six bites tops.

by Passive Voice on Jun 28, 2010 5:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Did you see that he had the most points for D-man in the BCHL? He is tiny though, maybe he’ll hit a growth spurt!

Think he’ll be one of those college player free draft picks that Gillis likes to talk about?

from a penticton blogger or something

How a 17-year-old rookie defender wins the blue-line points race, makes Team Canada West at the WJAC, is named top defender at the CJHL Prospects Game and quarterbacked the top power play in the league without much draft hype is a tad mysterious. Joey’s not huge, but he’s not small; he struggled at times in his own end, but heck he was in his first year of Junior; all in all Joey had a sensational rookie season.

by Passive Voice on Jun 28, 2010 6:33 PM PDT up reply actions

apparently, size matters! Maybe next year, if he replicates his production. He’d be a great gamble to take in a late round for a team that’s struggling and just needing talent everywhere.

by Sandwich76 on Jun 28, 2010 8:42 PM PDT up reply actions

If the kid wasn’t drafted, and its his draft year.

Sign him as a FA. He can show his stuff in Manitoba at least.

by vancitydan on Jun 28, 2010 8:51 PM PDT up reply actions

His numbers could be the result of playing on a stacked team. Vernon and Penticton recruit their players very agressively.

I'm such a suck

I have a soft spot for undersized D-men – but just one per team, thanks. ‘Course, I’m the same guy who was pitching for M.-A. Bergeron as a power play specialist free agent, and the team brought Schneider in instead. So what do I -
