Crap Shoot City: 2010 NHL Entry Draft Open Thread

20 years ago the Canucks had maybe the worst draft in their history. Seriously. Couldn't possibly happen again right? Of course not.

20 years ago the Canucks had maybe the worst draft in their history. Seriously. Couldn't possibly happen again right? Of course not.

Update (3:30 PM): Matthew Sekeres is tweeting that Florida is asking Mike Gillis for the Canucks' 25th pick in exchange for defenceman Keith Ballard. Bob McKenzie is more or less confirming this. (h/t andrew21nz)

Update: As we get closer to the buzzer, be sure to check out Western College Hockey Blog as they have compiled a great list of prospect profiles. Most of the notables should be there.

crap·shoot (kraps̸ho̵̅o̅t′)

noun

- a situation or undertaking whose outcome involves a high probability of failure or loss; gamble

Such is the vibe we get from our bossman heading into the 48th NHL Entry Draft tonight starting at 7 PM ET (Versus in the U.S., TSN in Canada). Saturday's action includes rounds 2-7 and will begin at 1 PM ET on the NHL Network.

Though Gillis doesn't think it's a great year for blueliners, our pulse check yesterday overwhelmingly indicates we'd like to see one scooped up at #25. Of course guys will slide up and down and it's always possible Gillis owns his crap shoot by taking Kirill Kabanov if he's available. Vancouver doesn't stand in the strongest of bargaining positions but anything can happen.

Time for Gillis to shine or - failing that - not stumble off a cliff.

Star-divide

Here's a recap of the moves made in the past few days (we'll update this as needed):

We'll add the picks up on the top once the show gets underway. If you see any credible rumors or tweets, drop 'em in the comments.

Nice to have something to look forward to again, eh?

I feel like i’m mostly alone in this on this board, but I gotta say I like the fact that gillis is not reactionary in his drafting and trading. That he’s willing to pass on a bad offer is not a bad thing, and it tires me when everyone gets their panties in a knot over lack of blockbusters. It seems hypocritical that in one breath everyone is castigating Dale Tallon for bad deals and in the next whining about lack of big gillis deals and no stanley cup here. Guess what? Those bad deals are a big part of why chicago won the cup, and it was part of a long-ish plan that saw the fans suffer a long time to get there. And will likely see them suffer again in a couple years. We are lucky here in that we don’t have to go thru that (we did in the 90’s), and MG doesn’t actually have to make a blockbuster deal…he just needs a few tweaks. He did fantastic things bringing us FU Sweden and Blastoff, and neither of those deals were viewed with excitement and joy when they happened last off-season. Sure Mathieu Schneider turned out to be a bust, but that happens to every GM every season…nobody bats 1000. If it was pure math, we’d have 30 teams tied for first. Fortunately the human element kicks in and we have a league with excitement and challenge.

I believe we can get away with tweaks again this year. We needed defense last year…we got it then they all got crippled. At least we had the depth to put out a team that could compete, although not as well as we woulda liked. We need defense again this year…and we’ll most likely get it. But again we could run into the same problem with injuries. All gillis needs to do is not lose his head and keep his eye on the plan; past that we can’t expect any more out of him.

Let the doucherockets on CDC and the call in shows call for his head…if you have any intelligence at all you have to give him props for putting together a good package thus far,and he’s done it without sacrificing the future. Our prospect book is fantastic right now, our team has the hart winner, a two time selke nominee, a vezina worthy goalie most seasons, and several secondary players who perform far beyond their expectations. Alot of those pieces were legacy, but many were not. There’s some dead weight too, but that’s to be expected I think. I’m sure our resident complainers will talk about swinging for the fences and all that, but let’s face it; if gillis swings for the fences and hits a foul ball, you’re just gonna scream and whine about what poor decisions were made. If he hits a homerun you’re still going to say burke was better, which I really don’t think he was (in my mind he was just different…neither of them are bad like a sather/sutter/milbury or awesome like a scotty bowman or ken holland). Burke got us the twins. That was masterful. Definitely a home run if viewed today. Yet we all complained about it the first 4 or 5 seasons they were here…heck even into the last naslund season they regularly pissed me off.

All in all I figure it will take a couple years to really get the picture on MG, and in that time he’s going to have successes and failures. My gut reaction when I see trades made that we’re not part of is ‘come on gillis, do something’, but then as I analyze them further they almost always seem to be not optimal for our team anyways. I appreciate that he makes his decisions logically and slowly, as I’d tend to make them emotionally and quickly; and if I
(or most of us here) was GM we’d have spent all our cap money and then some, and we’d have a bunch of players that have been available of late that turned out to be kinda underperforming compared to their rates.

Whew long post. There’s my two cents.

Who are you talking to? They had more points per minute of ice time than any regular (10 min+) player in the league, right from their second season! Advice: stop listening to call-in shows, keep reading here.

I sure didn’t complain.

by Jevant on Jun 25, 2010 11:08 AM PDT up reply actions

For all the hype, the sedins were just not as good as promised for several seasons. What they did do every year was improve, which is what makes them what they are today; that and the obvious chemistry. And you know what Thursday? How about a big Eff U about the call in shows comment, take off your rose colored memory glasses. I never wanted the twins sent away because of the points you mention, but like most canucks fans they made me cringe so often with sooooo many groaners those first few years. You seem to forget all the times they took a real dumb penalty, made a real bad giveaway that resulted in a goal or just made plays that made u go ‘huh? what were they thinking?’. They still do some of those things now, although not nearly as much. Plus they were undeniably light on the puck. When they gained a bunch of weight in the off season a couple years back, that’s when they became one of the most dangerous scoring duos in the league, and not before.

Damned straight. That pissed me off to no end.

by Sean Zandberg on Jun 25, 2010 11:51 AM PDT up reply actions

They took time.

And oddly, I could live with that. I lived with one guy who would bellow at the TV screen every time any player made a mistake of any kind, and frankly that gets really damn tedious. No one, and I mean no one on his team could do anything right. He didn’t think anyone had a learning curve, he didn’t remember that everyone takes time to learn the the game at this level.

So, yeah, they made mistakes. You know what? So does everyone else. You ever see Ray Borque get burned on the outside? It happened. Pavel Bure run into a defender instead of going around them? That happened, too. And people were one hell of a lot saner than they reacted to the Sedin twins when they made mistakes. And yes, the Sedins WERE just as good as promised – they needed development time, but some people couldn’t wait for that. So two fingers high back at cha, buddy, for the “rose coloured memory glasses” comment.

I think the Sedins were brought along pretty much perfectly: their ice time increased as they earned it; they weren’t brought in to the league until they could produce and even then they were on the third line until they earned their time. And yet there would be regular howls about how awful they were, how inexperienced they looked, how (as you say) light on the puck they were and what a horrible mistake it was to move up in the draft to get them.

The worst part of their game is their speed – they still take too many hooking penalties – but somehow the calls for them to be traded away have diminished. Some of us could wait for it, others howled instead. Want to call that rose coloured memories, go for it.

they needed development time

…this is why I don’t want to lose Raymond FWIW.

Haha, really? Then don’t ever go to a live Canadiens game then!

Throughout their trials and tribulations there was never a time when I wanted the Sedins traded. The West Coast Express was a completely different story.

by Sean Zandberg on Jun 25, 2010 2:11 PM PDT up reply actions

this is why I don’t want to lose Raymond

Completely agree. Raymond is going to be something damned special if we are patient. Probably my second fave player last season.

by Sean Zandberg on Jun 25, 2010 2:12 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree on Raymond; I think trading him now would be a waste of the great development work the Canucks have done on him. Yeah ray borque got burned outside and bure ran into defensemen…I saw gretzky pass a puck to an opposing player for a breakaway. Those things happen. I stand by what I said though: the development of the sedins was slower than scouting reports suggested it would be. They came into the league with the huge hype and promise. They reached that promise, but it took several seasons; to deny that is to show an utter lack of objectivity.

Don’t misunderstand me…I am and always have been a fan of the sedins. I was never one of the people who called them sisters. But we all have seen how other players who come out of the draft with the hype these guys did start winning awards in their first, second, third seasons.

Anyways the Sedin mention was secondary to my original comment, which was that Burke was not a better GM than Gillis to date, and vice versa. They both made some errors and some wins. The Sedin point was that to many it didn’t look like a clear cut win til later than was hoped.

A smattering of other names from that ‘era’: Harold Druken, Scott LaChance, Denis Pederson, Murray Baron, Josh Holden, Drake Berehowsky (yeesh), Peter Schaefer, Jan Hlavac, Bryan Helmer, Todd Warriner, Martin Rucinsky, Geoff Sanderson, Jason King (the mattress line!) and lovable Fedor Fedorov.

I do like that he was cautious when he first got on board; my only complaint out of the gate was Demitra and Sundin. Even his moves last year were fine: Sammy worked out great, Rome was a pleasant surprise as was Glass. But still we have nothing to show for it unless the NW title is the ultimate goal.

I want to see him roll the dice now – or at least be more involved than we have seen him – because I don’t want this window of opportunity to be wasted. The Sedins, Luongo and Kesler core has a limited shelf life and it’s his job to surround them with the assets to win. Otherwise it’s like watching Crawford and the WCE years all over again: great talent, no finish.

Pronger still had 1 year left on his contract. They later extended him beyond that. Big difference. Not merely a trade for rights.

by Beantown Canuck on Jun 25, 2010 12:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Different yes, but Holmgren moved two roster players and three picks (two first rounders) in order to get him. So clearly he HAD to extend him.

But moreover that was a giant gamble. I can’t fathom Gillis doing that, not that I blame him either.

er

obvs not philly. what i meant was trading for rights can be a non-failure move. the cost is generally low (ryan parent blows, for instance) and if signalling to the guy that you mean business gets him to sign on the line, the low-round pick is worth it.

by Passive Voice on Jun 25, 2010 1:08 PM PDT up reply actions

The Hamhuis one was conditional, too. Philly will get a shitty draft pick from Nashville if he doesn’t sign.

by Linden4evah on Jun 25, 2010 1:22 PM PDT up reply actions

well, they’re finally out from under nabokov’s contract, which was sorta burdensome. “doing the same thing” this year would mean running up against Chica in the Western Finals—the Sharks should like their odds in a rematch.

to me, the real bummer on their roster is heatley. dude just isn’t worth anywhere near his money. capgeek doesn’t list him as having a NTC anymore (did it expire?)—if that’s the case, I’d be rolling his ass out of town.

by Passive Voice on Jun 25, 2010 1:31 PM PDT up reply actions

But they had to give up Cheechoo to get him! Cheechoo!

by Beantown Canuck on Jun 25, 2010 1:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Good point. But these moves don’t give them any depth to their roster. Five players count for $32M off the cap. Several other teams are structured this way and it is a recipe to win in the regular season but not the playoffs.

I like how the Canucks are a little more balanced (top five is $26M) and can afford to a more expensive piece or two. For example, we could pick up a Savard or a Hamhuis and still have some room for a few role players in the $1M range.

So no matter what you hear about Hamhuis today here is the truth:

-negotiations have stalled and went nowhere today. They will continue through the weekend.
-Philly may deal his rights if they know a deal cannot be reached by July 1

Arnott (Hamhuis’ agent) is believed to be seeking a four-year deal worth at least $16 million. The hangup, sources say, isn’t money or length of contract.

It’s something more basic: how Hamhuis might be used as fifth defenseman, his minutes, etc. For the kind of money the Flyers would have to pay to sign the unrestricted free agent, he’s really a No. 3-4 defenseman.

Haha! Bullshit excuse! Hammer doesn’t want to play there. End of story.

More here.

5’11" but over 200 lbs so he’s pretty beefy, he throws a lot of hits too, but he’s got more giveaways than ANYONE on the Canucks, six times more than Bernier, yikes! Hopefully they don’t pair him with Ehrhoff or Edler.

True. But I do look at Grabner and see a pure goal scorer, which is something we’ve not had in a long, long time. He’s the Canuck’s biggest unknown right now: he really could be a fifty-goal man in the future.

Dude ...he is 6'3" and 215...and according to the assets section...

ASSETS: Plays a power game and loves to work the boards. Is strong on his skates and a load to move from the front of the net.

FLAWS: Needs to continue rounding out his offensive game, including his quickness and reaction time. Must hit people more often to be make more of an impact.

CAREER POTENTIAL: Big-bodied winger.

Sounds like a replacement for Bernier to me.

He did go to Rochester without a complaint, so that’s good news. But I still think that’s a high cost if it’s coming with Grabner going the other way. I don’t see a lot of numbers in his set that I like just now.

I don’t feel bad at all. This entire thing is a mess.

The more I look at it, the more I don’t mind the trade. It seems like it could be an overreaction on our part (maybe the Hamhuis thing spooked MG) but Ballard is immediately serviceable and he can’t be the last part of the blueline rebuild. Oreskovich seems like a hungry kid which is more than you could say for Bernier. If losing Grabner means keeping Raymond AND we still get the #25 pick, then it’s fine as long as Vancouver doesn’t turn into the worst team in the league next year.

by Thursday on Jun 25, 2010 6:21 PM PDT up reply actions

He’s the one that hurt his wrist, then got back to his team (Moncton?) and they gave him way less minutes.

He went back to Russia because the coach for the National team told him he would play big time.

Then the guy used him as an example and cut him, and slagged him in the paper.

He said he DEFINITELY does not want to play in Russia, but the other team’s may think he is a flake as a result.

Hopefully he falls far enough. At one time he was rated as in the mix with Seguin and Hall.

by vancitydan on Jun 25, 2010 6:28 PM PDT up reply actions

I have no idea. As been discussed many times, he quit hockey for 2 years after originally being drafted and then decided his passion came back. Quickly rose through Florida’s AHL team and played the second half of the season with the big club. Salary is only $575,000. He is big, and supposedly a decent checker.

I think Andrew Alberts will take that award assuming he’s still playing for us which I highly doubt.

Wow…how about that? Either it was a misdirection story about Kabanov, or maybe they hope the move up tomorrow and still get him.

Hard to believe a highly touted guy can fall that far over the whole “character” issue ( which sounds overblown.)

He was talked about last yr as a lottery pick….wow…tomorrow still has some fun to be had.

82 games a year

without playoffs.

1 draft a year.

Plus I think we all missed game threads so we used all our pent up game thread energy on this draft day thread.
