Byfuglien, Sopel, Eager to Atlanta for first round pick (New Jersey's), 2nd round pick (new jersey's), Reasoner and Jeremy Morin.

Via kausatoday, confirmed by TSNBobMcKenzie and Real_ESPNLeBrun.

Evening update: So, it turns out that this deal was pushing Atlanta over the 50 contract limit, so they had to flip a deal to send people to San Jose in order to complete the deal. Huge press release from the Thrashers.

Now

all they have to do is give us Sharpie and Seabs and I’ll be happy.

Still, massive trade. Looks like they’re solving their cap troubles.

Really? Reasoner has been on many teams because he regularly disappoints, and I have no idea who Morin is.

So, 2 draft picks for 3 fairly decent players?

I thought the Thrashers won this trade.

Maybe overpayed by a player to get in first.

A salary dump but they picked up 2 draft picks. It’s a good deal for Chicago. They built this Stanley Cup team through the draft. If they can shed more salary for picks then they could easily be the favourite again in a few year. They only really lost depth guys which is what they have to do now. I don’t think Buff is going to be anywhere as good as he was with Kane and Toews.

Hawks

Ok so now they are 52.2 M with 12 players signed. Their cap room is effectively 56.4 M due to bonuses so that means 11 players for 4.2 M. Still a long way to go before their cap problems are resolved.

I know that but Chicago has to carry over 3 M of bonus money from last year. Their effective cap for 10/11 is 59.4 M minus the 3M in bonus money from 09/10

by NuckFan on Jun 23, 2010 3:14 PM PDT up reply actions

You didn’t count Reasoner in that. He’s at 1.15 mill. So 3 mil space for 10 players… 4 forwards, 4 d-men, and 1 goalie (Niemi!). The obvious next step is to demote Huet to the AHL, but that still won’t be enough. They’re going to have to jettison at least one of Versteeg, Bolland, or Ladd, possibly two of them.

by Beantown Canuck on Jun 23, 2010 3:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Also, if Morin makes the team (I assume he’s meant for the AHL), his hit is almost $1 mill! Too much!

by Beantown Canuck on Jun 23, 2010 3:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Do you think the owner will just eat Huet’s contract, while keeping him in the AHL?

by Vancouverguy on Jun 23, 2010 3:31 PM PDT up reply actions

I do not like

This “bury in the minors” way of getting out of bad contracts.

Sure, you run the risk of losing a player to waivers, but if it’s a really bad contract, nobody’s going to pick it up anyways, and then you get a freebie to your cap.

"Playin hurt, baby that don't faze me. I don't got time for pain. The only pain I've got time for is the pain I put on fools who don't know what time it is!"

by Semi_Colon on Jun 23, 2010 3:32 PM PDT up reply actions

One of the problems the Hawks have with burying Huet in the minors is you can’t put a guy in the minors in the off-season so during the time when you have to sign other guys, he’s on your roster. Now you can go over the cap by 10% during this time (which is pretty much Huets salary). But at the end of day, it still leaves the Hawks with very little wiggle room trying to get guys signed, providing qualifying offers, respond to arbritation awards, etc.

But I’d like to have these problems and a cup.

by NuckFan on Jun 23, 2010 4:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Don’t forget that some other team can take a flyer on him and pay half.

Huet may not be THAT guy, but at half his salary, there might be some team that thinks they can re-up his career and stick it to the Hawks too.

Not sure how it works totally, but if someone claims him, isn’t that half the Hawks pay against their cap too?

I know the rules are in veterans’ favor, so you don’t see a lot of “burying in the minors”.

They may not be able to bury him so easy. ( Even the buyout, if they use that, will work against their cap…)

by vancitydan on Jun 23, 2010 4:42 PM PDT up reply actions

I believe that team pays his full salary, just splits the cap hit with the Hawks. So it has to a be an owner willing to do that.

by Beantown Canuck on Jun 23, 2010 7:45 PM PDT up reply actions

@RyanClassic thinks the Hawks will “lend” Huet to a Swiis team. Interesting theory.

So Atlanta moved Kovalchuck, Reasoner and Morin. a first and a second for Bergfors, Odyua, Byfuglien, Sopel, Eager and Aliu, proving once again that you don’t get value when you have to trade a superstar

Byfuglien played uninspired hockey right up until game two of round two in the playoffs this year. it will be interesting to see which guy shows up when he goes from being the toast of a major hockey market to Mr Anonymous in a lack-luster market. I think Atlanta will very likely regret this trade. Four picks in the first two rounds are way more valuable to them than an underwhelming collection of Blackhawks.

My hopes exceed my expectations

And…? It doesn’t matter where the picks came from, they traded them.

My hopes exceed my expectations
-WeepingTile

by ThomasPratt on Jun 23, 2010 8:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Well i recant on the second round pick because I checked the original trade and that apparently was a pick swap. But they didn’t trade the first round pick that they already head… they traded the first round pick that they RECEIVED AS PART OF THE KOVY DEAL! But here I can explain to you why it matters using basic math:

Kovy trade from Atlanta perspective:
- Kovy -2nd round pick +2nd round pick +1st round pick +Bergfors +Oduya

Today’s trade from Atlanta perspective:
-Morin -Reasoner -2nd round pick -1st round pick +Buff +Sopel +Eager +Aliu

So if you add this all together you get
-Kovy -Morin -Reason -2nd round -2nd round -1st round
Bergfors +Oduya +Sopel +Eager +Aliu 2nd round +1st round

Basic math skills enter here- can you see where those picks cancel each other out?

So they didn’t move Kov, Reasoner, Morin and a 1st and 2nd for all that… they moved Kov Reasoner, Morin and a 2nd. That’s a big difference!

And it’s silly to say you can’t get value back for a superstar without qualifying what sorts of rights you have to that superstar. Kovy was a rental who was about to walk from the Thrashers (and has now likely walked from the Devils). His value was thus limited. Compare to the bounty that the Bruins got for Kessel – because they controlled his future rights.

by Beantown Canuck on Jun 23, 2010 9:38 PM PDT up reply actions

That a very interesting perspective.

This morning Rick Dudley woke up with two first round picks. This evening, he went to bed with one. Sure, he got one of those picks from the Kovalchuck trade, I contend that you can’t just cancel out the lost opportunity by matching up the components in the two trades.

But hey, good effort.

My hopes exceed my expectations
-WeepingTile

by ThomasPratt on Jun 23, 2010 10:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Ugh! It’s basic math. If I give you A in exchange for B, and then I give you B in exchange for C, you can’t say that getting C cost me A and B! It either only cost me A or it only cost me B, depending on at what point you peg as the start!

So, to simplify things, if I give up Kovalchuck and get in exchange NJ’s first round pick, and then I give NJ’s first round pick in exchange for Buff & Co., it’s simply wrong to say that Buff & Co. cost me Kovalchuck AND a first round pick. Because I only got the first round pick as a result of giving up Kovalchuck! How does that not make sense?

by Beantown Canuck on Jun 24, 2010 7:17 AM PDT up reply actions

You can definitely say this deal cost a first round pick. And you can definitely, if you want to, go all the way back to the first day and say yesterday’s deal cost, in part, Kovalchuck. But you can’t say both! That’s all I’m saying. You have to pick a starting point and say “this is the set of assets we had at time A, and now here are the set of assets we have at time B”.

by Beantown Canuck on Jun 24, 2010 7:23 AM PDT up reply actions

Ever think that they got the second first round pick just as trade currency in the first place? I gotta go with Beantown on this one…u cant count the first; suppose it was a 3 way trade, would u still count the first round pick?

If I were balancing my chequbook, I would definitely follow your method. But I’m not. I am pointing out the sum total of what Atlanta gave up in order to allow Chicago to empty their latrine all over them. Atlanta is without both Kovalchuck and the first rounder they acquired for him. That’s all I’m pointing out. The Thrashers could have had two first round picks on Friday. They do not. They have one. From an asset perspective, they gave up both a first rounder and Kovy, et al and ended up with Bergfors, Odyua and a grinder collection.

I’m sorry to drive you to such distraction. I guarantee you the argument is not worth it.

I’m not missing your point at all. You’re just making a point irrelevant to the argument. I am at work right now, but when I get home, I will search through Sean’s online trade archive and see if I can find a case of anyone getting value for a superstar.

Atlanta certainly got a lot bigger in this trade, I’ll give them that. On the down side, the best player they got was Sopel, unless Aliu does something amazing, and quickly. Did they feel the team was getting pushed around during the season?

Buff and Eager are going to have their best chances to be productive. Atlanta needs to chase skill in the off season, but they should certainly be able to grind…

Interesting to see that they are picking up black players – think that may have been on their minds for marketing reasons? Kane is certainly marketable as a front-line guy, too. We generally go with East Indian where I live (the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island), and Native for the local bunch; but we’ve got a large population of both, so you’ve got to be specific if you want to talk about race here.

I’m reading a book called “black ice” all about a colored maritime league around the turn of the century in Nova Scotia. Interesting history of hockey and african descended canadians. Would recommend it for sure.

I will definitely

give it a read.

It is

Fascinating book. Being on the west coast, not a whole lot of Maritime history gets this far: the hockey tie-in certainly gives everyone a way in to the story!

Apparently

Atlanta would have 51 contracts with that trade.

D’oh! Someone needs to remember how to count

Terrible Deal for Atlanta

Buff is a part-time player. Sopel is overrated, big time. Eager is replaceable by pretty much any 4th line guy. Aliu will never be a regular player (no brain whatsoever).

And for that, they gave up a 1st, 2nd, Reasoner and a decent prospect in Morin?

Honestly, either Atlanta is on the NHL’s payroll and they were bound to help out Chicago, or Gillis should be on the phone to Atlanta offering Bieksa and Bernier for Bogosian and Kane.

Gotta play 'em, might as well win 'em.

It doesn't really make sense to me either.

I imagine this is Chicago right now:

In all honesty I don’t care if Chicago fans likes this deal or not. From my perspective: no more Buff for us to face. He definitely got into our players’ head, no doubt about it. So not having to deal with him makes us more competitive against the Hawks.

I think it was more than Buff who got into their heads. Hopefully you are right that it will us more competitive, or at least less likely to forget how to play hockey

Oh I agree. I just think this is one small thing. But one small thing is still a small thing in the direction.

I don't like the trade either...

…but I think you’re giving too little credit to the players who went to Atlanta. Eager is tough and perfectly happy to drop the gloves, something Atlanta only had with Eric Boulton, and frankly, Boulton’s not as good as Eager either on the ice or in a fight. Of course, he’s still unsigned, so Eager may not be staying.

Byfuglien is a full time player – he played every game last season and placed more than 200 shots on net – and he gives Atlanta a whole lot of meat up front. As for Aliu, well, no, he’s probably gone as far as he ever will.

I don’t know if Sopel’s over rated; over paid, certainly. But I can’t see anyone considering him anything other than a veteran 5-6 D who can kill penalties.

Going the other way, Reasoner hasn’t done much despite being given every chance to be a scorer in both Edmonton and Atlanta, two places desperate for scorers. Crabb is stuck at the “serviceable AHL forward” level, and Morin put up great numbers in the OHL, but that’s still two steps away.

I really think the Thrashers could have taken better advantage of Chicago’s situation, as they overpaid for who they got; but they will get some use out of those assets.

What is the deal with Aliu?

Everyone keeps ragging on him. Does he lack hockey smarts or something? He fought Steve Downie (admittedly his teammate and team captain at the time, but if what I read is true, he deserved it). Is he just not a good hockey player?

He needs to focus better, as he’s had discipline problems on and off ice; but if he can do that he may well get in as an agitator in the Steve Ott mode. That being said, he may not have enough skill to stick at the NHL level – he ended up in the ECHL last year, and has got to pick up his defence, especially if he’s on the third or fourth lines.

Still, he’s only 21, so he may be a late bloomer. And anyone who fights Downie has got to have some kharma coming back to them, right?
