I kept meaning to make this fanpost but was always forgetting. Those hockey peoples don't like us infecting their topics with a true global sport (I kid!) so the conversation can take place here.
Four games for the round of 16 confirmed so far, with the biggest game of all tonight, New Zealand v Paraguay 2am NZST (I'm sure you know how to convert that to your local time zone!)

Too bad about the socceroos. But I’m excited about USA! Best of luck to the All Whites!

U.S.A.!!!
So happy for them to get that win over Algeria. They were screwed out of a win over Slovenia and almost screwed over again with that offside goal called back in the 1st half. what is with the officiating against them.
Good for CONCACAF football. Cheers to U.S.A. and Mexico.
Yes…I’ll be cheering for NZ too, despite the joke of a qualification process they had to go through to get into the WC.
They have…we Canadians are just bitter because, since ’86, its been countries like Honduras, Costa Rico, etc going instead of us.
Who was the toughest they faced …Indonesia?
No offense intended of course…they are one of my fave stories this time. and have played with a tremendous spirit and passion. They aren’t scared of anyone.
i rec’d your post, but i won’t likely be talking much.

Go the All Whites...
…England, that is. Ze Germans up next – bring it on.
It doesn’t look good for Team England. We traditionally have trouble against them, and their young midfielders scare the hell out of me.
by Vancouverguy on Jun 23, 2010 3:41 PM PDT up reply actions
Ha, imagine that. Can’t see England making it past Germany, to be honest I’m suprised they beat Slovenia this morning
I think it’s pretty 50/50 to be honest. England have a mean defense – just one goal conceded so far, and that was a dreadful goalie error. We just need to show more going forward, particularly from Rooney (not quite sure what’s wrong with him at the moment). Germany have some good young players but have also looked vulnerable at times. Should be a close one – just no penalites please!!
by British Canuck on Jun 23, 2010 3:49 PM PDT up reply actions
Have to agree with you BC. The English defense is better than the Germans. Through all their first round matches, they have shown some serious lapses at the back.
Rooney is being marked very closely too. Other teams know he is the man.
My pick for unlikely hero in the Germany match is Peter Crouch…just so I can see his Ganglyman dance.
England 2-1.
Fave story has to be the Americans though. Close second to the Kiwis….
It’s sounding even better for England now, with a chance German midfielder Schweinstieger a distinct possibility to miss the Sunday game.

Why the U.S. hate?
If you value the growth of the sport in North America, you’d be cheering for the U.S.
The rise of US soccer leads the growth of the MLS which has led to teams in Van, TO and MTL. This will only help Canadian soccer. The bigger the sport gets here, then maybe Canada can get there heads out of their collective asses and qualify this century.
Maybe I am Amero-centric, but I am cheering on all CONCACAF teams first and foremost. Then the S.American teams (Chile is my dark-horse). Then all the small guys like NZ, Japan, Slovakia, S.Korea etc.
The big Euro countries are a bunch of over paid, whiny babies. England, France, Italy, Germany and Spain are all the same and can go f@#K themselves if you ask me.
I don’t really support the idea that the American team’s progress will generate more interest in the game. Honestly soccer is pretty popular in the states already, just not approaching the level of the big four or five sports.
I also enjoy the idea that America is bad at it when it comes to the best of other nations. They spend so much time trying to be the best at everything I enjoy watching them struggle against smaller countries. Soccer means so much more to the fiber of national identities around the world; for America it FEELS more like something to pass the time.
Keep in mind I’m a proud American who almost never supports my team in sports. Not at the WC or the Olympics. Or, hell, hockey! I enjoy being border agnostic.

Will have to catch up with the highlights of the other three games later today. All Whites did well but obviously lacked ideas going forward the whole tournament. Their defense and Paston were great. We’re still proud of them, although a bit disappointed we didn’t go through. We sould have clearly taken 3 draws and finishing ahead of Italy at the start of the tournament though. Now who to support…

Honestly, I think the English will take out the Germans this game.
Schweinstager(sp?) Oezil and another big starter are all nursing injuries.
And Fabio is right, the team looks like they have finally gotten it.
Schweinstieger is such a big lost.
I’m terrified of Ozil’s creativity though, he’s probably their best player other than Schweinstieger and Lahm at ths point.

Thoughts on the WC so far
- Even though they didn’t deserve to go through, I’m very relieved that England is moving on (my Dad’s English so they’re my team). Even better that they finished 2nd in their group, and now play on Sunday, as I won’t be able to watch the Saturday games due to playing rugby!
- Glad that at least one African team made it through – wish it had been South Africa though.
- As a few of you have mentioned, great to see the US go through. They fully deserved to win that group, despite the referee’s best efforts to screw ’em out of it
- How awesome was the Slovakia game today? Little Italy is a quiet place in Toronto today…
- Argentina looks like they’ll be tough to beat. My money is on them, so long as Maradona doesn’t decide to sub himself in.

I have loved watching the South American teams too…they ALL are through to the Rd of 16, right?
Chile is cool to watch, they just attack.
Paraguay is getting to be like Brazil light, same as Uraguay.
I am missing one right…Honduras? They are CONCACAF…
The Brazil/Portugal game has the potential to be very special….
You’re missing kinda an obvious one. I’ll give you one hint: its players have probably received more kisses and hugs from their manager than any other team in the tournament.
Chile is top of their group, but if they lose to Spain I think it’s possible they may not go through. Likely will though, in which case all of the S.America teams go through—which is pretty impressive!

Messi is the best player in the world right now. The way he made the team go in that last match, when almost all the top guys were resting. Brilliant stuff. I expect him to start scoring soon, and maybe not stop.
My only complaint has been the spotty reffing.

He was already gone after the WC anyways.
Showed his pure lack of class in the last game.
Shake the guy’s hand you buffoon. Holding a grudge for something he said a year ago…and when the SA coach was proven right.
Dommy is the biggest manager buffoon so far. Lippi too…but the French guy couldn’t even keep his team togaether!
Lippi didn’t shake his hand but by all accounts he didn’t blame anyone but himself after the game so I’m not sure what to think of him really. Cannavaro just walked past 3 Slovakian players without shaking their hands, although the way the Slovakians fell over the place in the last 5 minutes I’m not sure I can blame him. Not that I can feel sorry for them after the way they dived against NZ and then the incident in the goal after Italy scored when the keeper barely touched him and he went down as if he was shot
Ya, plus at least Italy had some calls going against them… that offside call was SO close.
Just goes to show, don’t fuck with karma, this is what a Thierry Henry handball against a better Irish team gets you.
By the way, sorry CC, I don’t mean to disparage your team, but the French really were awful.

That German midfield is so damn impressive. Keep in mind they are short arguably their most influential player and captain in Ballack.
I had hoped for great things by England this World Cup, but honestly, this group really wasn’t good enough to win it all. Hopefully we can have a competent partner for Rooney develop in the next 2 years, (for the European Championships).
The left midfield position is going to need a replacement too; this should conclusively end all discussion regarding the possibility of sticking Gerrard out of position at Left wing. Hopefully Capello can change it up, perhaps employing a 4-5-1 like most of the English public was calling for.
By the way, who was disappointed by the play of Glen Johnson? It’s almost like the year at Liverpool got him to suck also.

I’m glad Germany advanced, woot! Deutschland!
Two of my three teams are still in it.
Also, I think McCreary, McGeough, Auger and Fraser run FIFA officiating. This tournament has seen some of the worst officiating I’ve seen in any sport. Just absolutely horrendous and indefensible. It’s gotten past the point where it’s comically bad.

Yep…horrible. The England goal could have changed that game. You know they wouldn’t have played so loose if it was 2-2.
The 1st goal for Argentina was wrong…sure…but Argentina is currently outclassing the Mexicans…and probably still would have.
Mexico will yell and scream about that 1st goal, and it was offside. When you run it at real speed, its quite a bit harder to see though…it happened pretty quick.
Mexico is good, but they are outclassed. (I am glad to see Hernandez come to the Devils tho’…)
I suspect the Germany midfield is going to be able to break apart that Argentine Defense though. Their back 5 looks quite poor, and the German D, with their two defensive midfield will be much more of a match against the Argentine forwards.

Surely Capello can’t survive this? England were hopeless the whole tournament. Germany were far too good. I hope the English don’t go on about that no-goal, yes it was a bad decision but it wouldn’t have changed anything, Germany were far far better
Argentina look good too
Yes and no. Germany probably still wins…but the way the English play is a clogging, defensively responsible style.
They would have been much more defensive if it was 2-2.
The 3rd and 4th goals were the result of being on the break.
They may have still won, but that was an important decision. 2-2 at the half would have made this a totally different match.
I predict much complaining in the workplace tomorrow; you know how us English go on ;)
I agree with the sentiments that Germany would have still won (as much as it pains me to admit that), but the momentem and style would have been different in the second half and maybe that would have made a difference. But we’ll never know. And to think, we were worried about it going to penalties..
It wasn't just the perfectly good goal
that wasn’t given. Which by the way is more than just a small complaint. Can you honestly say you know who would have won if that goal was given? The ten minutes from when it was 2-0 until that good goal wasn’t given England blew Germany off the pitch. Maybe that would have continued with the momentum of a second goal. No one knows and it is a MASSIVE problem with the sport that shouldn’t be overlooked simply cause it happened to England.
But take a look at some replays of the first German goal. When Neuer boots that ball up field 2 German players, including Klose who scored the goal, were miles, and I mean miles, offside. Fully 20 feet in behind the England defense. There is no way that first goal should have stood. That’s two routine decisions in a massive game that were horribly botched. It’s a major problem with the sport regardless of who you support.

I agree that something needs to be done with going upstairs with the goal rule
However the Germans were the better side by far. Even the British papers are saying that, although perhaps that’s not the best point when they get stuck into the players half the time. Germany more than deserved to go through, England looked decidely average throughout the whole tournament and that didn’t change tonight apart from the 10-15 mins you mentioned. Germany were written off before the tournament but have proven to be the far better side
They were better at the start, but I just can’t see the last 2 goals happening if they were tied.
Would England be caught in the counter-attacks if they were tied? At the very least, they wouldn’t be pushing their wingbacks up constantly.
What’s with officiating over the last couple of years? It’s a pandemic across all sports.
by Vancouverguy on Jun 28, 2010 2:13 PM PDT up reply actions
You just can't say Germany deserved anything
that came after the perfectly good goal that would have made it 2-2. You have no idea what would have happened. Maybe a minute later Rooney scores a thunderbolt from 40 yards and England run away with it. Maybe Germany still wins but none of that matters. All that matters is that a goal that was perfectly good wasn’t counted. Anything that happens after that point shouldn’t have happened and has no bearing on the outcome of the game that would have occured if the goal was correctly given. The only thing that matters is that the game should have been 2-2 and whatever happened after that goal was irrelevant. Germany being the better team in the second half is so completely irrelevant. You just can’t say Germany were better so they deserved it. England SCORED a goal to make it 2-2. They deserved the right to play on from that point and try to win the game.

I don’t think Capello gets fired for this.
Yes, it is a failure, but truthfully, it wasn’t only based on tactics. He has failed with selecting a good enough team, and this is not something that can be blamed entirely on him. There just isn’t enough English talent, and a large number of English players had a massive drop in form before the tournement.
Carrick, Rooney, Lennon, Gerrard, Defoe, Barry all were either a) carrying injuries, or b) playing poorly at the end of the season. Yes, Capello could have picked someone else, but really, was there THAT much to choose from? Hopefully, this is going to trigger a complete overhaul of the national team. That we can no longer count on the “Golden Generation” any more.
by Vancouverguy on Jun 28, 2010 2:10 PM PDT up reply actions
Its time. They should have a summit like we did for hockey…and develop some of the youngins skills more.
Watching the Samba Boys, or even the Dutch…is to see some quality moves and thought for the game.
The English side just did not do that this time. They need to get younger.
That being said, I think Germany might have won in the end, but I totally agree with you on the tactics and the disallowed goal.
England was one of the best defensive teams coming in…and besides the Hand of Clod, had not allowed a goal going into the Germany match.
The German papers calling it “justice” for ’66 is a total joke though…the ’66 goal was on the line.
Lampard’s was a full yard inside the goal.
Yup, if only we ran a National Sports Team. How can people be so ignorant?
They do need to re-evaluate everything about the program. From their training, to the player’s participation, to the players development etc. etc. etc. Just look at how the USA Basketball program revamped their system after the debacle of the 04 Olympics.
We are going to need a infusion of young talents. Guys like Rodwell, Wilshere, Ashley Young, are going to have to develop, and develop QUICKLY in order for us to remain competitive. Playing through the Euro qualifying is great, when you can afford to pad your stats against smaller countries, Andorra, Kazhakstan, Belarus is great. But it’s obvious we just don’t have the talent on the team like the Brazilians, or the Argentines, or the Netherlands. If you were to create a squad of 11 players, how many English players will you take? Ashley Cole? Rooney? Talent-wise, we are just not as good. Tactically, we’re also not playing to the strengths of the team.
Keep in mind, Euro qualifying starts in September. Capello better get his shit together, and fast.

Usually they have a bigger one though. What do you guys think about limiting the amount of overseas players in the EPL so they actually develop more young English players, surely that would only help them longterm. Although they may get a bit less money, and they are businesses really
I think the new “Home-Grown” rule kicks in next season, I’m not too sure about the details, but it requires that a minimum number of Home-Grown players, (players that have trained under English teams) be under the employ of each team.
As a consumer of the product, I’d much prefer having the best players in the game I’m watching, but if you consider the future of English football, it’s probably not a bad idea.

I hate Ronaldo based on the last world cup where Portugal dropped Holland in the final 16. That game, by the way, holds the WC record for the most bookings in a single game: four red cards and 16 yellows! Ronaldo couldn’t have been more disgusting and, when I was at the World Cup this year, I read a British report on the top ten divers and he was still #1 (granted it was British so take it with a grain of salt).

That’s the second game in a row involving Portugal that i’ve been disappointed, especially against a quality opponent too.
Capdevilla’s dive was lame, the red card is nothing out of ordinary from this world cup’s officiating standards. Good thing the game was pretty much over by that point.
Sitting back and defending against Spain just doesn’t work. Spain eventually picked the D apart with great skill.
I’m not going to lie, I loved Ronaldo when he was a Man U player, not his arrogance mind you, but he can be the most skillful player on the pitch at any given day. I barely noticed him in the game, since Portugal was so busy defending, they didn’t have a chance to set up even half chances. Spain looks like they are going to walk past Paraguay, (which was also not great of a game), to set up a huge semi-finals game.

Cheating? I guess it was cheating but
He was punished. A red card and a penalty. He did what he had to do to stop the goal and broke a rule doing it and he was rightly punished. Ghana fucked it up but Uruguay and Saurez did what they had to do to move on.

Whomever it is ( and Suarez is one of the premier divers of this WC …he is no Ronaldo, but give him time…he just burst on the world stage)…they would be off the team in a second if they didn’t do that.
Ghana should have a penalty taking coach though. Almost every one in the SO, and Gyan at the death, took like one or two step run ups.
That keeper was giggling as he stopped them. He didn’t look scared at all.
They never gave him a reason to. And this from a team that had some big PK goals earlier on.

Semi Finals
I don’t see how the Dutch can lose to Uruguay but I wouldn’t put money on it.
The Germany/Spain game is going to be sick. I’m calling for extra time and Torres potting one in at about the 110 minute mark. 3-2 Spain.
Going to church makes you a Christian just as much as standing in a garage makes you a car.
Yeah I’m trying not to put Holland in the finals yet mentally, but Uruguay hasn’t run up against an opponent like them yet. It’ll be interesting to see if all the Dutch strikers can get going at once.

They really only have 1 out and out striker, Van Persie. Kuyt hardly counts as a “striker” per se,
I wonder how Holland will cope with losing Van Bommel.

I just noticed this thread
USA : Ghana :: Canucks : Blackhawks
Sad the USA went out, but before the tournament I wasn’t expecting anything more than the round of 16 this time. On their best days, the US can play with anyone despite now-you-see-it-now-you-don’t offense and a suspect back line. But the US has to decide to be the windshield, because otherwise it’s going to be the bug. I look forward to seeing what happens when talent finally meets grit.
Can’t really complain about Ghana going out, but it does make rooting for the Netherlands very, very, very easy. I’m also rooting for Germany in the other semifinal. How the heck did they lose to Serbia? Did they get the wrong directions to the stadium or something?
I can root for any CONCACAF team with the obvious exception of !#$ing Mexico. I don't root for the Mexican men, ever. I despise Argentina and Diego Maradona, but I still rooted for them against !#$ing Mexico. Glad Germany shut Maradona up, though.
I can’t view Canada the same way. Canada I’ll root for in anything unless they’re playing the US, and if Canada beats the US, my reaction is to shrug and congratulate Canada on the win. Mexico? Forget that. I wish all sorts of misfortune on El Cry. I wanted Mexico to have a scoreless draw with France, and lose its other two games by dos a cero. (Glad to see France melt down, BTW. They did not deserve to be in that tournament.)
One of the great things about CONCACAF is the hexagonal: When it comes down to those final six teams for CONCACAF qualifying, there are no Andorras or Faeroe Islands in that group. The US and Mexico you can always pretty much pencil in, but they have to work at it, because there’s a whole lot of talented Central American countries that know how to play soccer and love nothing more than beating Mexico and especially the US.
I’m picking a Germany-Netherlands final. Germany should be the favorite, and I won’t cry if they win, but I’ll be rooting for the Netherlands since they’ve never won it before.
I cheer for France
and I was legitimately embarassed for the team that I cheer for. They acted like petulant, stupid children, and they should have just forfeited and saved us all the frustration.

Just had to share this little nugget from the always entertaining Kurtenbloggers.
" By now you’ve all heard of Paul the psychic octopus, a.k.a. the eight-armed dynamo that’s correctly predicted five straight World Cup outcomes involving Germany. So magical are his powers that the internet was recently flooded with pictures of Paul picking Spain over Germany in the World Cup semi finals – pictures that have since been deemed fakes! Turns out the Sea Life Aquarium in Oberhauser, Germany, has confirmed Paul won’t be making his real pick until today, meaning there are people out there doctoring photos of an octopus picking soccer games. This is reason No. 4,320 why the internet is awesome and, in the same breathe, quite frightening. "
Wow huh?

Hey…the octopus picked Spain tomorrow!
LOL
The Netherlands backed off of Forlan like he had the Plague.
Ummm…is there another ore dangerous guy on the pitch for the opponent guys? Guys?
Oh, and nice to see that Suarez’s replacement (Cavani?) is keeping up the diving. Friggen joke that one in the box…running into the guys arm, and then going down like that…
But their manager says “we don’t cheat”.
Cavani is a poor replacement. They actually don’t have a direct replacement, they used to play 4-3-3 with Cavani, Forlan, Suarez up front, and they changed to a 4-4-2 today.
Uruguay made it close at the end, but by then, I really thought the game was out of reach. Lots of weak dives around the pitch, but you can’t question the better team won.
And that first goal, really? I’d just man-mark Forlan the whole game… with 2 guys if I had to.
They’re so damn organized.

I have never understood
sports fans who hate certain sports. Other than American football, which I don’t like but can put up with, and NASCAR, again I don’t like but sometimes I watch the last 10 laps to see who wins, I pretty much love and can watch every sport and enjoy it. I love Aussie rules football. Cricket. Golf. I even enjoy the darts when it is on TV. It’s like when someone loves a band like Keane but hates Coldplay. I just don’t get disliking one of two things that are SO similar.

NASCAR I’ll admit I don’t understand and I’ve never tried. Not that I can’t respect it (I couldn’t drive those cars any more than I could maintain a handicap in the double digits if we go back to golf)…some sports just seem more entertaining and everyone has their definition of entertainment.
Though I seem to recall an argument I had a few years ago where someone was honestly trying to tell me a tennis player was more fit than a hockey player and I lost my shit.

Depends how you define fit
a tennis player can most certainly run for longer distances than a hockey player. Do you think a hockey player could do what Mahut and Isner did? I saw a TV show once where they scientifically broke down which sports keep you in the best shape perpendicularly and soccer was tops.

We weren’t taking extremes like that into account. Her argument was the single effort of a player under different weather constraints and different course types, coupled with the speed and lateral movements involved, made tennis harder. I tabled that she didn’t actually watch hockey outside of thinking they’re all goons and that most players have incredible strength, tree trunk legs and make light fast decisions often times while going at full speed on a slippery surface while trying to coordinate hand and eye movements with a small object and a stick with not just their team mates but the opponents actions too.
I tried to be fair…and I don’t watch tennis either but tried to give it a fair shake.

Huh?
Spain was the best all game long. I can only remember one chance that Kroos had that was saved.
Besides, the Germans were diving like Greg Luoganis, especially towards the end. Good reffing…every time they got close to the penalty area, the buggers were going down.
My girlfriend is a Netherlands supporter, so I should cheer for them
But I am going for Spain…though it should be a fantastic Final.
The Spanish showed they have the quality to do it. Expect them to hold the ball in that game as much as this one.
Go Spain!!
I still don't understand why Low changed tactics.
I’m pretty relieved Muller didn’t play.
Torres will score. Viva Espana!
"I was thinking it would be cool to see a game on the road. I have been looking all over this atlas but I don't see Vancouver anywhere. What state is this sh*t in!?"

I wondered about that. They sat back, knowing how lethal they ahve been on the counter. Maybe that was the idea.
The Spanish midfield and defenders did a wonderful job of snuffing out those dangerous counters. They won way more of the ball.
I think that made Low’s tactics look so bad.
The Spanish knew what they were doing…and interrupted so many German moves.
Muller might have helped…his replacement had the best chance and shot right at the goalie.
Maybe if he is in, he scores there.
Spain have way more of the ball
every time they play. Their midfield is the best in the world and it’s hard to get the ball off them and keep it. That’s the way it is. Holland will have to sit back and defend well and be patient and be better on the counter attack than Germany was.

Muller wasn’t benched, he was suspended. It was a good free flowing game for the most part which I didn’t expect. If you give the Spanish that much room you’re going to lose. I think Pedro’s attempt to dribble around the two defenders rather than lay it off for Torres has bought himself a seat on the bench for the final. I’m calling for a 2-2 game after 90 minutes with Kuyt and Sneijder for the Dutch and Villa and Torres for Spain. Torres will score his second in extra time to give Spain the 3-2 victory.
Going to church makes you a Christian just as much as standing in a garage makes you a car.
I picked the Dutch before the tourny
no reason to change now. Sneijder is the in form player in the world and has been for the better part of 4 months. He will pull the strings on a memorable Dutch victory.

At the risk of sounding turncoat, cus the other half is Dutch all the way…I want Spain to win.
I was on the fence until the way they beat Germany….that ball possession is going to be tough for the Ojange…
If Steckelenburg plays like he did against Uruguay, he’ll be in for a long night. Xabi Alonso, Villa, Iniesta will all test him from afar.
Spain’s possession game against Germany was certainly the most impressive display. I keep quoting that Paraguay game though, because Spain really struggled for almost ALL of that game, until Villa’s winner. Until then, I would even consider the chances as fairly even. For some reason, Paraguay would always get a foot, a head, or a body part to knock the ball away from the original intended target, and then Spain would get the ball back. But Spain’s domination in possession didn’t really lead to a lot of high quality chances, unlike the German game.

Apparently, he was hurt, which prevented him from “long shots”. Holy crap, he was hurt, and can shoot like that.
That was one hell of a shot, feel bad for him to not score it, but I hoped for a German win and I got it.

It's okay,
I have no problems with that, I haven’t even gotten with my anti-Chelsea rant. But somehow, the less Abramhovic interferes, and with the loss of Ballack, I somehow have began to appreciate them as a team.
Ancelotti probably has a big part in that.

I'm looking forward to him
helping Liverpool struggle to maintain mid table status. City, Tottenham, Villa, Everton are all better squads at this point. I really like what Everton have done this off season. They have a lot of fire power up front now and Rodwell is going to be a revelation this season.

We did in the 08/09 season with almost the same squad. Why can’t we do it again? If Rafa had some balls and actually tried to win games rather than sit and defend draws we would’ve won the Premiership that year.

Despite how much I hate City,
City’s getting into the top 4. Yaya Toure is a signing that made a lot of sense for them, although I still dont’ understand how everything is going to fit with respect to playing time. I’m pretty sure there will be lots of unhappy guys on the bench.
Silva is going to be an improvement over SWP, he can play with Adam Johnson. They might knock Arsenal into 4th, unless the Arsenal youngsters can grow up fast, and start grinding out wins against lesser opponents.
by Vancouverguy on Jul 11, 2010 11:20 AM PDT up reply actions
Rodwell is a freaking stud. His play last year has been good, but this year, with some maturity, I expect him to be even more consistent. I don’t know about Everton making the top-4, I just don’t think they’re deep enough to get in that 4th spot, but a midfield with Pineaar, Rodwell and Cahill is great. Saha’s a huge boost as long as he’s not hurt.
I think we’ll be seeing a lot of Rodwell during Euro qualifying for England too.

Rodwell, Wiltshere, Lennon, Walcott
Ashley Young, Gabby Agbonlahor……I would like to see all of those guys more involved. And some other young guys I have probably forgotten.

C'mon Fernando
You’ve got 2 months to get fucking healthy. Suck it up princess.

2 months?
Someone should tell Liverpool that the season starts on August 14th……..34 days.

Knowing Torres.. He’ll be out for 3 months……
If you were in to scoring, that was a poor game, but at least it was well-contested. Heitinga being sent off, forcing Van der Vaart to play CB probably made the difference, which is probably why Iniesta was able to sneak behind the defensive line.
Well done, Spain!

Laurent Blanc is the coach…and a good one.
Not that egomaniac ZZ. You don’t need him at all.
The French team just needs leadership…
And less assholery.
I know Zizou wouldn’t be the coach, I want him to come back as a player!
Looking forward to the fucking idiocy of Raymond Domenech being wiped from F.F.F., glad Blanc is the coach now.

some structure and logic to the system will help.
Gutting the team, and re-picking the best players that are willing to play together is the next step. There’s no way Blanc will choose some of the older players that caused the divide in the team.
There are newer, younger talents available to France. Gourcuff can dominate in attack for years to come.

Yeah
but the rest of the players, including Ribery, were being douches to Gouarcuff.
Definitely need some actual tactics and leadership. Less astrology too.

If you were Blanc, would you have the balls to cut Ribery from the team?
Not that he plays well internationally anyways… but if you are planning for 2012, you’re going to need a solid team

Jesus CC, as a player?
That guy would get run into the ground against the young speed merchants in the game now.
It can’t get any worse than the Lord of the Flies vibe that team had this year.
Mind you, I side with the Irish on that one. Cheating your way in like they did was bound to have a karmic boomerang.
Yeah
I predicted vicious karma resulting from that game against the Irish.
I just want Zizou to come back and bring us back some dignity :(

LOL. You can’t fool the karma gods. They even managed to make the English look good…. And the Italians can always fall back on this excuse: At least we didn’t end up like France.

Yeah. There has been so much good sport over the last few months. I think I’ll miss it now more after the World Cup is done. No real big sport to look forward to now. Premier League and the Phoenix (Wellington football team) don’t start for a month and hockey is like 3 months away :(
Rosterbation for EPL! I’m so sad that Manchester is leaving their free-spending ways. I’d love to see Balotelli or Ozil playing for the Red Devils.

There was talk he would be loaned out to get more size before playing in the very physical EPL.
