Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

Maybe Ryan Kesler and Ladd could put their differences aside? This would be a great acquisition for Vancouver, as Ladd is a versatile depth winger and hails from Maple Ridge, BC.
Ladd's ice time and stats dipped last season. Check out his stats here. Ladd is a restricted free agent who made $1.6 million last season.

Kesler/Ladd

If they are teammates, it will all be water under the bridge. I am not worried about that.

I can only see investing in another winger if a) Raymond is traded/elsewhere and/or b) Bernier is traded/elsewhere. Maybe even both. The team needs another C, not another W at this point. Although admittedly there will be some dominos yet to drop.

But I do like, in theory, the addition of Ladd. Depends on the rest of the moving parts.

Gotta play 'em, might as well win 'em.

What if they are banking on Hodgson being the 3rd center?
And I remember Ladd taking draws before…………or maybe I was drunk

by Sean Zandberg on Jun 22, 2010 9:03 AM PDT reply actions

I am banking on Hodgson being 3LC. I’ve been banking on that for 2 offseasons now…haha.

But I do think more C depth is a must. Somebody who can play 4LC or 3LW in a pinch. Belanger, Cullen, Malhotra, Nichol, etc. I am not comfortable with CoHo-Rypien being the bottom 2 Cs (or at least the only 2 options there).

If that is taken care of and there is still room for Ladd, yay. But my guess would be that Bernier will have to go if that’s going to be a possibility.

Gotta play 'em, might as well win 'em.

by Jevant on Jun 22, 2010 9:10 AM PDT up reply actions

Yep. I would give him Stone Hands’ spot.

Hodgson and a free agent third liner to replace Welly sounds good. Not Belanger though, that guy doesn’t always bring it.

Cullen and/or Malholtra sound OK. Not sure we could afford him for 3rd line, but how about John Madden? That mercenary will play anywhere, and it would really piss off Hawk fans if we used two of their “own” to win a Cup ourselves…

Honestly, I really see Cody as playing in the AHL and being a callup. I think the Canucks will make better use of their AHL players that show NHL level talent and can be called up on EL deals. We all know there is injuries every year.

Madden would be my pick of free agent centres in this particular rosterbation fantasy.

by vancitydan on Jun 22, 2010 9:49 AM PDT up reply actions

Ladd would be a good addition. He’s nasty, not a defensive liability and now he’s got one of those much desired Stanley Cup rings. Having him on the third line would almost certainly free up Burrows to focus more on goal scoring.

We definitely need more depth at center. I wouldn’t be surprised to see more of Bolduc next season in the number 4 slot. A gritty veteran number three guy to complement Ladd or whoever they have back there would really nice.

As far as old rivalries go, I feel he’ll be more of a Willie Mitchell or Esa Tikkanen than a Mark Messier.

He already had one

he now has two. He won a cup in Carolina.

Good point about Bolduc. I think he has earned that spot.
Another thing, the title: “Canucks are interested in Ladd” is so damned vague. The Canucks are interested in a butt-load of players. It’s just a matter of how hard are they pursuing him? And how are the talks going?

I've been saying this for a while

well saying we should be interested in him. Ladd is the perfect guy for this team. A 3rd line checking winger that can move up and play 2nd line wing as well if need be. I see him and Burrows as the start of an impressive third line. Not sure you could afford Matt Cullen to center them but if you could it would be sweet. The Canucks have a window of about 4 or 5 years here to win a cup so I like additions like Ladd and Cullen so we can really go for it now. Move our top prospects and a couple of D men of our roster for D upgrades and really make a run at a cup. If it doesn’t work we can rebuild in 5 years.

interested how ?

Are they going to trade for his rights or just tender him an offer as an RFA ?

by PrairieStew on Jun 22, 2010 10:56 AM PDT reply actions

Go straight for the offer. Why give the Hawks a gift when you can put them in a vice instead?

by Thursday on Jun 22, 2010 11:53 AM PDT up reply actions

There’s no guarantee that he signs our contract that way… any team can make him an offer, and then the player gets to decide. If we get his rights via trade, then he’s in our hands so long as we match any offer sheets once. The certainty over his rights is added value that Chicago would be wise to capitalize on if there appear to be multiple suitors, they could get more value than the return for an offer sheet at Ladd’s salary.

by Beantown Canuck on Jun 22, 2010 2:24 PM PDT up reply actions

True of every RFA contract. I can see where it makes sense to Chicago to trade him, but not so much on trading for him. He’s going to get offers, no matter who holds his rights. Why trade away something in exchange for whatever you gain when he goes to someone desperate in a front-loaded deal? Offer that deal yourself, keep the rest of your assets, and if he comes, great!

by Thursday on Jun 22, 2010 5:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Because he may decide “oh I would rather choose team x over team y if the offer me similar deals, because I like team x better”. If you’re team y, then you can control the situation only if you have his rights. This way, if he signs an offer sheet from team x, you can match and he’s yours. Otherwise you won’t get him. It’s about risk management.

by Beantown Canuck on Jun 22, 2010 9:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Awesome

I’d take him. Give them Stone Hands. All around good player.

I don’t think Chicago would want to take on any salary for Ladd, if they could avoid it.

What about our first rounder and Bernier for Ladd and/or Byfiuglien?

For some reason

I dont think I could handle having Buff on our team.

what i heard earlier today was that Byfuglien was available for trade, but the Hawks want a first-round draft pick and a prospect in return.

So if you’re a top team who won’t pick until 30th the following year anyway why not go for it? I would

by Sean Zandberg on Jun 22, 2010 5:37 PM PDT up reply actions

One reason is the regular season – there have been accusations of laziness and a bad attitude this season coming from Byfuglien. How well a dressing room works is a big deal for me.

What prospect do you think Chicago would take in addition to that first round pick?

by Thursday on Jun 22, 2010 8:50 PM PDT up reply actions

A dressing room that wins a Stanley Cup is a dressing room that I’ll take any day!

by Beantown Canuck on Jun 22, 2010 9:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Got to agree there.

But Buf isn’t worth a 1st+. He is a flavour of the day. Being big and all…thiugh his trade value is never higher…but really, unless that prospect is middling, and that pick is last 3 of the 1st rd, I aint interested.

He is a better puck handler than given credit for, but this is his first real success, and now he is worth that much?

by vancitydan on Jun 23, 2010 7:58 AM PDT up reply actions

Buff strikes me as a great big version of Welly. Constantly has to be kicked in the ass to get going. I believe we’ve mentioned this before…..all the tools, no toolbox.

never hurts having a guy with his name on the cup on the team, especially if their national team won’t pick them.

Two Stanley Cup rings?

F_ck Yes.

ps-And then the Canucks can wrap Bernier in a carpet and throw him off a bridge.

Bring the Ridge boys home. First Ladd, then pry Yip away from Colorado, then get Patrick Wiercioch away from Ottawa. Maybe get BMo for cheap, too.
