PrintAlthough Sean posted quite a few updates yesterday, today has some breaking news, some of which could be considered schadenfraude to some people.
- Originally reported by RDS, then confirmed by TSN as well as the Blues organization, the Montreal Canadiens have traded RFA Jaroslav Halak to the St. Louis Blues for prospects Lars Eller and Ian Schultz. SLGT is stunned. UPDATE: Via Mirtle, Blues President Davidson has said that Chris Mason will not be returning to the Blues.
- Daniel Briere and his son were in a nasty car accident this morning. Luckily, they are both doing just fine. NBC Philadelphia has more.
- The New Jersey Devils have promoted assistant coach John MacLean to head coach. Story at NHL.com.
- The Detroit Red Wings have resigned Todd Bertuzzi for 2 more years. More at NHL.com. (h/t to Beantown for the fanshot last night)
- Many teams have already been releasing their preseason schedules today. I'm keeping a look out for ours, or at least any mention of other teams facing the Canucks.
- Added just after: The following tweet from an economic development lady in Glendale, Arizona: "Ice Edge Holdings has submitted proof of financing to Glendale today to buy the Phoenix Coyotes, group official says."
- Added: Busy day for the Blues, eh? They just sent their prospect Julian Talbot to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for prospect T.J. Hensick.
- Added: Via Coyotes PR, Adrian Aucoin has been resigned to a 2-year deal. UPDATE: I should've waited just 1 more minute for the official press release.
- Added on Friday: Found a trace of our preseason schedule!!! On September 21st, the Canucks and Flames are splitting the squads in half, and are having 2 games at once (one in Calgary, one in Vancouver) to kick off the Flames' preseason. Interesting.....
- Added on Friday: A possible exchange of coaches? Winnipeg Free Press reports that the Manitoba Moose have offered Claude Noel the head coach job, who filled in for Hitchcock as the Blue Jackets head coach for the remainder of the 09-10 season.

Ahaha, perfect! (Although words cannot express how much that show, and Horatio in particular, annoys me).
It’s the coach. Domenech is brutal, and your team basically quit on him 2 years ago.
Who the hell tries to get 4 wingbacks to play D on the team? Abidal in particular has played horribly today.
They have lots of talent, Lloris is a stud, but he can’t stop the ball if he has no defense. The loss of L.Diarra undoubtedly hurts, but the center midfield is still solid, expecially with Toulalan and Diaby playing well against Uraguay, (not as well against the Mexican).
Too much of the attacking onus is placed on Ribery, and he is being closed down with 3-4 defenders, so he can’t do anything with the ball. I thought they would play Gourcuff to open up space for Ribery, but after his first inefficient display, that’s out the window too.
Anelka and Gignac both haven’t showed me a thing.
On the other hand, I’m really impressed with J. Hernandez today. I’m really excited about him, being a Man U fan, he’s been lighting it up during the pre-World Cup friendlies and now, a real poacher’s effort today. He reminds me a lot of Michael Owen in his prime, minus the injuries.
Aguirre outcoached Domenech, and that’s the end of that. If Domenech doesn’t get fired after this, someone should pay to get him killed. Seriously.

Although, funny story, I went over from Victoria for the weekend of the round robin game vs the USA, and came back Sunday night afterwards. Coming out of Vancouver from a friends place, I got to the ferry to find about 1,000 people in line to walk-on for the 9PM ferry. Needless to say, I did not make that ferry, although I was SOOOOOO close (10 or so people back when they stopped letting people on). So we had to wait for the midnight, which ended up being an 11 so it wasn’t too bad.
But the point of the story, it took me longer to get the 50ish km from Vancouver back to Victoria than it did for me to fly back from Kingston to Victoria, including layovers.

i think it’s kinda useless looking at the 1st round picks, since we’re 25th. for example, last year schroeder was projected to go 15th, but then fell to 23rd where we grabbed him.

Fuck Halak! He has a miracle run in the playoffs..so what? I wouldn’t pay him $4 million-plus for that. Halak can go suck an egg. Really. Don’t overpay playoff heroes. Cam Ward?? Where is he? Fernando Pisani? Dustin Penner?
The Habs did not have much of a choice with Halak and did the right thing PLUS: watch…they are going to sign a UFA goalie and run a 2-tier goalie system for cheaper. I say..wise move. I think it’s going to be a Biron-Price tandem and I say that’s not all that bad.
It could either go one of two ways
If Halak becomes mortal again, it will look like an okay move, assuming the guys the Habs got in return actually do something useful.
But if Halak continues to play amazing, it will look like Patrick Roy Rd. 2, except they kept the guy who the crowd shat on.
It’s too early to tell (obviously), but I think it favoured the Blues. Even if Halak regresses a bit he’ll still be pretty damn good, but maybe everyone knows to go high on him now, so who knows.

See? Everyone says Halak this Halak that. What about Eller and Schultz? They could turn out to be beneficial players. Halak did not fit into Montreal’s financial plans. They will go with a 2-tier goalie system for half the price Halak is asking for. Like the Habs GM said today…they are somewhat modeling the Hawks in this. A cheap goalie played well enough to help them win the Cup and they could spend the $$$ elsewhere. What is so wrong with that?

I’m not saying anything is wrong with the 2-tier system. It’s obvious it can work.
Although I’d be careful about modeling after the Hawks…unless you plan on firesale-ing your team after you realize you went $4MM over next year’s cap with only 14 players signed.
Of course Eller and Schultz have an open ceiling of potential. They could turn out to be superstars, but they could also turn out to be not fit for the big league. Halak has at least shown that he can play at a pretty decent level in the regular season, and play at an above decent level in the playoffs. He’s also the right age to be coming into his prime as a goaltender. When Cam Ward won the cup, he was what, 22? Early peak, early flame out. We’ve seen that before in guys like Raycroft (okay, he didn’t win the cup but still, Calder).
So it’s more of a proven commodity vs. unproven.

Apparently Mason rejected a 3.25 mil offer and countered with a 3.75 mil offer.

Halak has pretty good career numbers too...
Albeit a small sample. I think he’s a legit starter and Price’s pedigree is the only reason he’s not been on stage more.
His slovakian performances were strong too.

In today’s cap system…you gotta go for the Cup at some point. Go all out and then dismantle the team somewhat the following summer due to cap restrictions.
I agree 100% with this. If you don’t have the balls to do it, you’ll miss your window and have to wait for the long arm of the pendulum to swing back alllll the way back to suckage and back.
That being said, Chicago made some pretty big addition mistakes with their cap situation.

I only managed to listen/watch the last quarter, but when I read the score, 56-ish for the Lakers, I thought I was reading the second quarter scores. That was ALL they scored for 3 quarters.
Must not have been a pleasant game to watch, no doubt. At least it was close.
