What would you give up for Nathan Horton?
- Nathan Horton #16 Right Wing
- Height: 6-2 Weight: 229
- Shoots: Right
- Born: May 29, 1985 - Welland, Ontario
- Draft: 2003 - 1st round (3rd overall) by the Florida Panthers
According to the Sun-Sentinel (via kukla) Horton could be traded before the draft. The article references the Sabres as a team that is in the hunt, and doesn't mention the other teams that have shown interest. It also mentions that the Panthers are looking for a top-6 center, which the Canucks don't have available unless you count the rights to Kyle Wellwood.
I'd be willing to give up Mason Raymond and Steve Bernier, although i'm not sure if that's an appealing offer for Dale Tallon. Heck, throw in Welly too.

But I don’t trust Horton’s ability to stay healthy
the time he missed last year was due to a broken leg suffered when one of his teammates hit him in the shin with a slapshot on an attempted dump in. it was hilarious. but it’s a freak accident. Horton’s injury sheet is no messier than the average dude.

And prior to that, the Richards hit.

Yes
Quite profoundly.

Horton is a very good player, but quite frankly he doesn’t serve a current glaring hole. We don’t need to be trading for top 6 forwards at this point.
by Beantown Canuck on Jun 16, 2010 6:52 PM PDT reply actions
the current glaring hole for me is power forward, which horton would be. to jevant’s point about salary, raymond is going to cost 3M to keep, so a straight up deal (which i’m sure wouldn’t be enough for a 3rd overall pick) is a minor bump.
Raymond + ? for Horton? That intrigues me. If they would be willing to take Bernier’s salary as well, I could perhaps see that.
I guess I’d be loathe to spend much money on the top 6 until the top 4 D have been sorted out. If somehow there is money/room for Horton, I’d certainly be happy to acquire him.
Gotta play 'em, might as well win 'em.
Horton
I love the concept of acquiring Horton, but only if a top 6 winger spot opened up, which it hasn’t. Pretty much I agree with Beantown…feels like I’ve been saying that a lot recently. Isn’t he also like $4m? If so, that pretty much pooches that idea. Although I do like the idea of seeing him on the same line as Kesler.
Gotta play 'em, might as well win 'em.
Dont need him.

the declining totals
Makes me think of Rob Niedermayer. Peaked at 21 with 30 goals and 60 pts. Perhaps it’s the size and the the Florida thing, but it is eerily similar. Needs to play in top 6 and essentially offers no upgrade for Canucks
Not an upgrade in the top 6. Niedermayer would be an upgrade in the bottom 6 though
by Sean Zandberg on Jun 18, 2010 6:34 PM PDT up reply actions
I'm saying
Horton looks like Niedermayer – a guy who peaked early and may not have much of an upside, and he might not be a top 6 guy as you say.

He’d be a great player, but not for the Canucks. I could see him Burkie acquiring him though, as he’s the typical “Brian Burke player”.

The thing I’ve wanted to see since last summer is Horton with Thornton, and not just cuz their names rhyme. I’ve got a sneaking suspicion that Horton’s got huge latent goal-scoring talent.
Dont’ be giving the Sharks management any ideas now.

Nathan Horton’s a good player, but if I wanted a punishing third line winger with a bit of a scoring touch I’d be chasing after Ryan Callahan, I’d give up quite a bit to get him on the team.
I can’t imagine Callahan is on the block at all. Seems like every SBN blog is in love with the dude, meaning that GMs all around probably are too.

Rangers
would not give up Callahan. One of the few good players they have.

to flr : Bieksa, Raymond, Schroeder, 1st pick
to van: Horton, 3rd overall
If this world was perfect I would keep all these players and make the upgrades that this team needs through the system, free agency, and a good trade. But the world is not perfect so I feel that MG has to do something brash to get what he needs for the future. With the 3rd overall pick I’d assume he would draft Cam Fowler. Horton could slot in as a big, gritty second liner with scoring ability for a cap hit of about 3-4 million dollars ( im not sure about his contract situation ). We can give Grabner a real shot at playing in the NHL and if he doesn’t put up the same numbers as Raymond id be surprised. With the remaining cap space MG would have the means to go out and sign a player like Volchenkov/Hamhuis and we would have a new look defence with the “gritty” second line guy who has offensive upside.
Raymond and Bieksa would be playing in the southern states so far away from the canucks that no matter how good/bad they play it doesn’t effect the canucks. FYI I think that Schroeder is one day going to be a top 6 guy but I would trade a top 6 guy for a top 2 Defenceman any day ( especially if I don’t have that definite stud )
i would even do bieksa raymond c.schneider for horton and a 3rd…
they wont trade the 3rd overall pick…
i had horton in my hockey pool all year so i followed him alot. His ppg this year would’ve led to a career high 71 pts if he played all 82 games. He is not on the decline, and the injury was a freak accident. This guy is fine. He played with weiss and frolik last year, not exactly a line that strikes fear into opponents eyes…
weiss was on a career pace until horton went out, and even though horton was injured he is still 2nd on their team in scoring…
this guy is the real deal and ive wanted him on the canuck roster for a while
pairing him with kesler and burrows/samuelsson/grabner will make our top 6 even more potent than last year, and with bieksa’s contract gone, we can put the money to signing a dman to replace him.
Will florida bite? i dont know, they have an elite goalie prospect already and vokoun is rumored to be not going anywhere…
Horton is good, but he aint worth all that.
I would give up Bieksa and Raymond, and maybe swap picks, but that’s that.
It is way to early to give up on Shroeder, who looks very good.
This deal doesn’t address the defense anyhow. Though a second line of Kesler, Horton and any one of several others sounds pretty sweet.
Bieksa’s deal is only 3.75. You have to pay Horton and his almost 5 mil Cap hit too.
I would do the deal I mentioned above, take Gudbranson or Fowler , and shuffle my cap in a way to get Volchenkov.
his cap hit is 4 million…so swapping bieksa and raymond together for him is a perfect deal for us since we can draft a defenceman if we were to get that pick and sign a free agent like a train

Ahhh…that it is…i just looked at what he has left.
Fair enough. That does make it more palatable.
Though I would hope the TSN story is true.
Pick up Andrew Ladd, have some of the kids step up, and devote most of the extra $$$ to the defense.
A train and then some.
But yeah, Horton at 4 mil is a possibility.
Great deal for the Bruins! They’re my team in the east, so I’m happy.

Absolutely
Dennis Wideman is my all time favourite Knight, but this is a solid deal for the Bruins. Well done.
Gotta play 'em, might as well win 'em.
Wideman
was their best player in the playoffs and they already have Savard, Bergeron and Krejci up the middle, expect one of them to get moved.
