Update 12:30 PST (h/t WAACH'cast): Rick Rypien and Pavol "Demotion" Demitra will be healthy scratches for tonight. Michael Grabner and Tanner Glass draw in. The lines look like this:

Sedins-Burrows

Grabner-Kesler-Raymond (yes!)

Samuelsson-Wellwood-Hansen

Glass-Johnson-Bernier

Adam Burish called Burrows and O'Brien clowns today. "Give me a break. If you want to target someone, come find me or [Ben Eager]. You guys want to pretend you're so tough, and yet you go and try to pick a fight with those guys. If you want to hit them and play hard, fine. But those clowns are pushing them after the whistle and punching them." Boo hoo Burish. Somebody call a wahmbulance.

***********************************

The Canucks have said a lot about what they need to do to take Game 4: score more on their power plays, decrease traffic in front of Roberto Luongo by boxing the Hawks out, tying up sticks in front of Luongo when the Hawk players get through, get more traffic in front of Auntie Niemi, etc. Now they just need to go out and do it. As this series has a schitzophrenic feel to it, where anything can and will happen, I wouldn't put it past Vancouver to do exactly what they say they have to do.

Star-divide

Yes I am optimistic about this game. It's going to be a stroke-inducing riot. I trust that this team of ours is going to put forth an excellent effort and remedy their mistakes especially from Game 3.

-Strange how this is the same scenario the Canucks found themselves in in Round 1. They won the first game and lost the next 2. The Canucks have not lost 3 straight games since mid January.

-FYI,

Canucks scoring leaders in this series:

1. Mason Raymond: 2 goals 1 assist. I have really liked his play overall.

2. Ryan Kesler and Sami Salo: 3 assists

3. Jannik Hansen, Henrik Sedin and Christian Ehrhoff: 1 goal and 1 assist each

4. Alexander Edler: 2 assists

Blackhawks scoring leaders in this series:

1. Jonathan Toews: 5 assists

2. Patrick Kane: 2 goals and 2 assists

3. Dustin Byfuglien: 3 goals

4. Kris Versteeg: 2 goals and 1 assist

5. Brent Seabrook: 1 goal and 2 assists

Canucks need more scoring from more people, starting with the Sedins of course. Samuelsson has cooled off in this series but could strike at any time. Wellwood and Bernier: get your shit together!

Updates on both teams as the day goes along. There are sure to be lineup changes.

In the meantime...I was going to post a Metallica live video of them playing Blackened when I came across this:

Well sheeit.

I've got some words for that song:

Attack in their end

Pain and death you send

Hit all those you see

Crash Niemi's crease

Slash him in the pads

Cross check Andrew Ladd

Top shelf and you'll score

Buffy nevermore

NEVERRRRRR!

Fire! Set the tone and get into their heads

Quenneville's face is red

To ensure the Chosen Ones' run is dead

Color their world blackened

Blackened!

That was fast!!

As of now (10:45 a.m. PT), the Yahoo NHL page has it up that the Hawks have already won today 5-2, and lead the series 3-1!

It was a surreal and freaky moment when I saw that. I know I slept in, but… already?!

(I’m assuming they’ve just got last game’s stats stuck in that position, and will fix it soon. Maybe it has the same effect of saying the word “shutout” late in a game… maybe it’ll cause the opposite to happen?)

"He'll play, you know he'll play. He'll play on crutches if he has to... and he'll play at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night! This game is over!"

Demitra is playing like an uninspired ass. I approve!

by Sean Zandberg on May 7, 2010 11:59 AM PDT up reply actions

Wow, I know you guys are rough on Demitra

but are Grabner/Glass an upgrade? Correct me if I’m wrong, but with AV/Luongo’s talk the last couple days, I’m assuming Grabner/Glass are bigger forwards that will hover around/through/on top of Niemi’s crease.

by EamusCatuli23 on May 7, 2010 11:32 AM PDT up reply actions

Glass is meh, but at least he initiates contact and is a decent forechecker.

Grabner has shown flashes of goodness, and has the footspeed to make a recovery (a la Raymond) if a turnover occurs

by ChuckinNux on May 7, 2010 11:33 AM PDT up reply actions

Demitra is increasingly becoming a liability so it stands to reason he sits. Grabner has the speed to I think to make life more hectic for Chicago, especially through the neutral zone.

Rypien is only 5’11’’ and 170 lbs…Glass is 6’2’’ and 210 lbs (or something). If the idea is to rattle Niemi a bit more, Glass is a better option. He also lead the Canucks in hits in the regular season.

Auntie Niemi

I feel obligated as a Hawks fan to dub Cry Baby Bob “Roberta Luongo” as long as the other side feels fit to dub Antti, “Auntie”. That is all….GO HAWKS!!!

by pnote on May 7, 2010 12:18 PM PDT reply actions

we weren’t the ones to dub him that… seen that moniker tacked on all season. go back to last year if you want. that will help you deal with the pain to come. we prefer Antti Claus, because of the gifts he gives out… By the way, really impressed with the clever feminization of players names. Unique and witty.

we need to get our stories straight here

I don’t think I’ve seen him called that out of derision for any weak goals he’s given up…

But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too."

nah, not really

there was one commenter who, during a particularly strong performance, mentioned maybe we should be calling Niemi “Uncle” instead.

Tonight is going to be a very interesting game

I have no feel of how it will be or who will win. Will it be the Hawks or Nucks, will it be a blow out or close maybe OT. This is a pivotal game for both teams.

The Nucks have to adjust from the last two games, but the Hawks will anticipate and counter, but with what? Stretched ice, roaming forwards, Trapping, Tight Point, shooting from the point or high slot? This will be very interesting to see!

I generally have a gut or some other reason to go with one team or another

But tonight, I have not a clue. I feel either team can dominate tonight, but I can also see 3OT game as well. It really comes down to 1. How well the Nucks adjust 2. How the Hawks counter. Who ever wins this little battle wins tonight.

when i originally went ot put up my prediction for the final game score, i had no idea who i felt would win.

by missy on May 7, 2010 3:32 PM PDT up reply actions

The 1st period will be the tell tale

I really think the Nucks have the bigger hill to climb in this game (not series). They need to figure out how to mitigate the Mack truck the Hawks park in front of LU, and get to Niemi. This is a tall order to do BOTH.

I see the Hawks counter being keeping Buff low, but more shots from the center of the circles, point and high slot with 1-2 other Hawks crashing low, while the D is already retreating to the Blue line-Neutral Zone to prevent an odd man rush. I also see the Hawks actually shooting higher on LU more, just to keep him honest, and not let him get down and ready to control the low shot. keep him from playing 6’ across and keep it 6′×4′.

If the Nucks do neutralize Buff low and crash Niemi, this will inevitably lead to more long outlet passes with 1-2 forwards alone on 1-2 D-men (this is not good for you guys), or just a general run-n-gun contest, and I think the Nucks D is much weaker in minimizing high quality chances than the Hawks D.

But the Nucks have a hell of a team, the Hawks have layed big turds (Game 1), so it is anybody’s game.

It’s funny how we were able to completely mitigate Byfuglien’s effectiveness in Game 1, partially BECAUSE we were playing such a up-and-down game, Byfuglien doesn’t have the speed to park his fat ass in front of the crease.

It’s going to be hard to break open the game against the Keith/Seabrook pairing. Part of AV’s thinking may be to keep his offensive weapons spread out. This prevents the (K)eith/(S)eabrook pair from shutting down most of our offensive threats.

Wellwood, from what little I have seen of games, still is playing at a relatively high level, with him feeding Sammuelson instead of the hobo-wearing-Demo’s sweater, we might actually have 3 functional, semi-efficient lines tonight. 3 Lines that could sustain some offensive pressure, and shoot pucks from all over, and hopefully give Niemi the fits.

Granted, I still think Hjarmalsson(sp) is an awesome find for them, and the rest of their D is pretty tough to take on, but at least we’re not forced to rely on the Sedins to take on K/S.

I should have course have mentioned that his pt/game was a dman in jr.
