Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

They were better against Chicago stars Patrick Kane, who had an empty-net goal, and Jonathan Toews than they were in the opener. The Blackhawks’ brawnier lineup and more physical play had no effect on the Canucks. Luongo was excellent for a fifth straight game — further evidence that his epic second-half struggles are over.

And, really, who wouldn't take a split from the first two games on the road?

Kane

I wish someone would nail that punk. Seriously, there were half a dozen times when I thought one of our d-men was going to pound him on one of his rushes, but no one did. Probably easier said than done, as he’s a slippery bastard, but still… someone’s gotta make him think twice about rushing into our zone like that. Oh, for a Scott Stevens-type on our blueline!

I am a die-hard Knights fan...

…and I cannot wait until someone rams that mouthguard down his throat. Do all the Hawks have to have their mouthguards half in and out of their mouth?

Other than that, I agree with Sean – I am remarkably zen about this entire playoff run.

Knights, Canucks, Dolphins, Jays and Raptors all the way.

Jeebus, I must be getting old. It’s the first (and only) time in my life that I’ve felt what it’s like to have your face and lungs burn from tear gas. I happened to unwittingly be walking down Robson street after the game—on my way home from my friend’s place—when things just exploded The next thing I knew, I was crawling on my hands and knees trying to avoid the worst of the tear gas. In the years following, I moved to various hotspots around the world—war zones even—yet never again found myself having to fend off the effects of tear gas.

Oh, yeah, I almost forgot; Screw the Black Hawks!

I grew up in Ottawa and cheered for them till I was about 10, then I moved to Vancouver and dedicated myself to another fledging Canadian franchise.

It was the only time I ever got kicked out of the Roxy...

When I used to go there another lifetime ago. We went there to commiserate after already getting shitfaced at a sports bar at Robson and Beatty. ( now a eating est. or something ).

After surviving the bouncers and wavering on Granville, I made a drunken decision that turned out quite well. I staggered home down Smithe instead of taking my usual stroll down Robsonstrasse.

I was too drunk to even notice the tear gas in the air, or maybe just upwind. You could still smell a faint tinge of something in the air the next morning joe, when the destruction was something to walk aghast past on the way to work.

Its something you can read and see videos of, but just amazing to see the level of destruction the next morning as you sip your Starbucks trying to kill a monster hangover and agonizing over how that pussy Lafayette couldn’t fill an empty net. How do people hit the post when they have the whole open net?

You have definitely had the best missy. Post lockout hockey rocks in comparison. They showed the final game of ‘94 on late night CBC last night. There were penalties aplenty by today’s rules. People waterskiing behind their checks. The game these days is waaaay better.

We had the amazement of 82, and then the ( for me) expected deep run in ’94. But there is a whole new generation of fans that have our loss to Calgary in ’04, and this cool Hawks hatred/respect vibe.

2003 Still stings for me, and I assume everyone else…fuck the Wild. That team was one I thought was ready for the big run. ( FU Bert’ ;-)

But living through losses to the Flames when they ended up going on runs ( and really…though the Red Mile and the flashing of boobs thing was of course fun and all… you still had to live in Calgary the rest of the year instead of Vancouver. So there. )

I didn’t get gassed like joe, but lived D/T that whole amazing run. That made it quite a bit more intimate to me, and I assume him too. But that just means we are older. And the recent history is just as intense and gut wrenching.

The idea of getting there again and seeing the city the same as ’94 though( minus a riot of course ) is why we are fans…for me anyhow. Take it from a long time Vancouverite, there is nothing like this city in the midst of a Cup Run.

And it would have some cool Canuck kismet to knock out the Hawks again like ‘82, if not only to avenge last year’s loss.

Oh yeah..Screw the Black Hawks!

Maybe we were lucky we survived that without being down 3-0 or 4-0. After that it was like game 1 reversed, aside from Luongo.

Strange how you can put pretty much the same two teams on the ice on two different days and get such different results.

I wish that I could get some film showing the whole rink, as it seemed to me that either the Canucks changed their forecheck approach, or Chicago had figured it out. There were too many times where a Chicago D-man split the Canucks forecheck with a tape-to-tape pass through the middle, where one of their forwards received going full speed just past his own blue line.

Anybody have any insight into this?

The 3 SH scoring chances for the Hawks

are an issue….as is out chancing a team 7-1 in the first 5 minutes of a game and then getting out chances 20-9 for the rest of the game. The one positive from last nights game is the play of Roberto Luongo. He has been excellent and if he plays the rest of the series this well then we have a shot. Gotta do a better job of staying on the front foot though. I expected a push back from the Hawks and after a slow start we got it. But a series tied 1-1 heading to Vancouver for 2 games is a great way to start a series. Here’s hoping the Canucks finish the series strong too.

Could definitely be a lot worse

Again I’m enjoying them being composed and I look forward to seeing AV free up the Sedins more (or at least get them away from Toews and Keith) and seeing what can happen. The play was badly one sided there but they’re hanging in there and just need to bury their chances, big difference between games on and two.

I like Luongo’s play right now. The only thing that bothers me though, is that sometimes he goes down too early, and, as in the last game, he had no chance to cover the top shelf with his shoulders. May be it’s because he worries too much about the ice-level shots, and try to cover as much down low as he can.

Fourth Line

Less than five minutes, eh? Guess it was a closer game this time! I see Alberts was somewhat more limited this time out, too.

I am a bit surprised by that – the fourth is not a particular liability for us. But that’s what happens when you’re sitting on a one-goal lead for 40 minutes… Wouldn’t mind seeing a bit more of a mix at home.

AV can pick and choose his spots for the Sedins over the next two games. Should be interesting to see if Quinnie makes any changes on the road.

Gotta disagree with MacIntyre here:

The Blackhawks’ brawnier lineup and more physical play had no effect on the Canucks.

The physical play of the Hawks is what won most of the board/puck battles for them. As I said in the post-game thread, I noticed that the Canucks hesitated when going to retrieve pucks—looking concerned with taking hits; overall, they looked intimidated as it’s not a tough lineup to push around. This led to the Hawks dictating the play and having the puck for much of the game after the 2 Canucks goals.

Yes, I’ve noticed that they were afraid to take hits. Also, they were reluctant to give hits on the offensive zone. WTF!

Los Angeles, CA

by AttilaS on May 4, 2010 4:40 PM PDT up reply actions

The Canucks played it properly there. Most of their possessions were lost on sloppy passes. And they didn’t give into the goonery (aka skated the hell away) in game 2 either, which is good. Convert some chances, keep your foot down and there is no way Chicago’s more physical lineup is worth it in say, game 4.

by ShiftySC on May 4, 2010 5:30 PM PDT up reply actions

The physical play shut down the Sedins as well.

I haven’t seen them hit that often in a while. Can’t let them continue to get away with that.

Is there a particular reason why the Chicago players allow themselves to perform all those extra-curricular activities (double show-shower, bumping after the whistle, threatening, yapping, etc. etc.), while the Canucks were behaving like altar boys. May be because Chicago had the home ice, and they felt entitled, in their own rink. But I don’t think the Canucks should tolerate that back in Vancouver.
I am all for disciplined hockey, but how much shit can we take before it’s enough. The referees didn’t even try to contain the Hawks in this area.

I think vigneault wanted them focused on hockey and less on retaliating. Honestly if Bieksa had slammed home that cross bar shot in the first and it was 3-0, not sure how much we would have seen of Chicago doing that. I like the composure honestly.

Ignore it and hope the referees notice that you are ignoring it. When you ice a fast team like the Canucks are doing right now, you don’t snow shower goaltenders. Otherwise you have to answer for it, and can’t. It’s smart, since one of our biggest assets is our overall speed.

It also makes me feel less bad about our inability to hold on to a 2 goal lead, when even the Red Wings, (with all their championship pedigree) can’t hold that 3-1 lead.

Once Jimmy Howard giving up that brutal tying goal, the sharks winning in OT was simply inevitable.
