Canucks Sign Free Agent Defenceman Chris Tanev
Tanev is 20 years old. He is listed as 6'2" and 185 pounds. The Canucks have signed the undrafted kid to a 3-year entry level contract. He played for the R.I.T. (Rochester Institute of Technology) Tigers of the NCAA in 2009-10, racking up 10 goals and 28 points in 41 games (4th on the team). Born in East York Ontario, he played 4 seasons in the Ontario Provincial Junior Hockey League and another season in the Ontario Junior Hockey League, according to hockeydb.com.
To quote what a poster on HF Boards found:
Chris was a real late bloomer who grew almost six inches during his final
year of juniors. He is a very skilled player who can be a dominant defenseman as he gets stronger. Chris is an excellent passer who moves the puck very well and has a great shot.
Favorite team: Detroit Red Wings. Favorite player: Niklas Lidstrom.
His defence partner on the RIT team Dan Ringwald said this of him:
“Chris Tanev is an awesome player. We came together about a month into the season and we’ve been playing pretty well together. He’s just a really smart player."
An interview with Tanev at Inside College Hockey here.
More praise for Tanev here (again, hat tip to the peeps on the HF Boards)

If only the Canucks were still in the playoffs around my 20th birthday....
Questions
Newbie again: As I understand it, if a team had drafted Tanev last year, it would have held Tanev’s rights even if he’d decided to play all four years, correct? But, if he’d gone into the OHL and been drafted, that team would’ve been able to hold his rights for only two years, correct?
What happens when the rights expire? Does the player go back into the draft, or is the draft only for 18-year-olds? If a kid in the CHL doesn’t get drafted as an 18-year-old and then rips up the ice the next year, he still wouldn’t go back into the draft and teams could bid on him? And would the same rules apply to a kid taking the NCAA route for all four years?
Thanks again.

Can never have too much depth (actually, I believe per the CBA, the maximum depth you can have is 90 players)

Nice to see Gillis bolstering the blueline prospects. It’s a good start.
