Around SBN: The Week In Worst: When Baseball Goes Wrong

The play in Vancouver on Tuesday where the Canucks' Ryan Kesler was given a major and game misconduct for driving Phoenix's Derek Morris into the boards should serve as Exhibit A as to what is not a penalty of any kind, but rather an example of a player attempting to draw a penalty by turning his back on a checker.

Morris, playing the puck near the right half-wall in his own end, took a quick glance to his left, saw Kesler coming, then turned his back on the checker before jumping into the boards after the hit had been delivered in order to draw a penalty.

Talk about a lack of respect for the game.

don’t usually agree with Brooks, but I think he has a point here. There’s too much of this going on, and all the refs did by throwing Kes out was send the message if you take one like Morris you can get a guy kicked out of the game.

I'm not so sure about this.

It didn’t look like Morris jumped into the boards. But he did put himself in a vulnerable position by intentionally turning his back to Kesler when he knew he could potentially get hit. I don’t think the hit was game misconduct-worthy, but a penalty was certainly warranted.

I wonder if there could be some kind of stipulation for diving if it is determined a player intentionally positioned himself to be hit from behind.

It is strange that they haven’t made mention of it. I expect we hear some language about just that thing in the offseason tweaking of the headshot rule.

Larry has a point, but of course he has to write in the NY Post tabloid style.

He didn’t “jump” into the boards.

He did try to take one to draw a penalty. What pissed me off was his dirty player…and everyone knows he plays like that comments afterwards.

Seemed kind of…whiny. Seemed a little bitchy and acting like a punk, to tell the truth.

Maybe thats the reason Morris bounces around the league like a superball, and Kes’ is one of the fasting rising young stars.

"I’m not asking for first-line money or top six money," Burrows said. "I don’t think it changes anything. I still consider myself a checker. That’s what I think I am first. That’s how I want to be paid. "If I can generate offence once in a while, I think it’s a plus for the team." Alex Burrows...Mar/09

I’m on Brooksie’s side here… I just hope I don’t get beat up at the bus stop as well.

I totally agree with Brooks! Morris turned his back and it was too late for Kesler to let up. They can’t call those.

Agreed

not to mention the major point of contact was at hip level.
