Around SBN: Lakers Should Trade Andrew Bynum So He Doesn't Go To Waste

The Michael Grabner Show!

"Send me back to Manitoba? I don't think so."

The boxscore says he played only 13:08, but he finished with a hatty and a +3. It was just a matter of time before he broke out. Barring some lousy play in the final few games of the season it looks like he's going to stay on the roster for the playoffs. Here are video clips of Grabner's 3 goals against the Ducks on Friday night.

GOAL 1: He's got a bullet shot!

Star-divide

GOAL 2: Accuracy

GOAL 3: Hand-eye coordination

That is the guy they have been talking about the past couple years.

by GZ Expat on Apr 3, 2010 3:53 AM PDT reply actions

Interesting

If indeed he’s going to stick around for the playoffs (and that seems likely considering how he’s played), the team has some very interesting decisions to make.

In any event, forward depth should not be an issue.

Whomever suggested:
Sedin-Sedin-Burrows
Raymond-Kesler-Grabner
Demitra-Wellwood-Samuelsson
Hansen-Johnson-Glass (or Bernier, or Rypien)

seems to have it about right to me. Not sure how you can take Hansen out of the lineup at this point (same goes for Grabner).

If Mitchell could somehow come back, that would be awesome. Either that or we need SOB to get his head screwed on straight, and quick.

Knights, Canucks, Dolphins, Jays and Raptors all the way.

Anyone know how many chances Grabner had last night? I felt like he could’ve had 2 or 3 more.

Man, imagine this forward corps in a couple years with Grabner, Hodgson, Raymond, maybe Schroeder (in addition obviously to the Sedins, Kesler, Burrows) … love the young talent!

Was at the game...

I have been living in Socal for 10 years now.
I have never seen anything like that.
5 years ago I was one of maybe 10 people wearing a Canucks jersey in the stands when they came to town. Last night it felt like 1/3rd of the building was wearing Canucks blue and green. There had to be a couple thousand people there.

Not sure if it was the long weekend and everyone felt a great vacation was to head down south and catch Thurs/Fri games but it was crazy.
I have never seen anything like that down here outside of when the Red Wings come to town.
Pretty cool stuff and what a great game!
I brought a couple casual hockey fans, dressed them up in Canucks gear and they said that was one of the best hockey game they had ever seen.

Or the row with the giant Wellwood, Kesler and Ehrhoff heads?

It did look like a lot of fun. They ( you guys ) were louder than the home fans…even helped call a penalty!

No. I don’t know how but I didn’t even see them!

We had sick seats, center ice 13th row scooped off some season ticket holder friends. Nut sure if they were upstairs, behind us or I just have plain bad eyesight.

There were alot of Canucks fans to look at, plus when dealing with people from Van maybe I just thought the oversized cut out heads were just there normal noggins :)

I see Grabs going the Mayray route in that his speed adds to his defensive abilities. I’m sure the coaches will tone him down if they see him running erratically all over the ice on D.
Mitchell shouldn’t and won’t be back for the playoffs.
Thanks, Dave Nonis for signing the Grabs we saw last night.
WHAT A RUSH!

by Bobby Canuck on Apr 3, 2010 11:09 AM PDT reply actions

Grabner doesn’t really have that Bure problem on D because he has learned to play both ways under Scott Arniel and the Moose.

by Sean Zandberg on Apr 3, 2010 11:39 AM PDT up reply actions

Grabs will be Raymond-esque soon.

Ive noticed he’s more willing to take the shot on the rush or make the pass rather than skate like lightning and take a bad-angle shot. The boy is showing progress already!

Grabner showed not only speed, shooting and hand-eye last nite, he really showed how strong he is on his skates.

Reminded me of kesler that way (just not quite as big). As w/raymond, I think his weight-training is paying off.

And does he just seem play his best w/kes or what? Keep those guys together!

Yep

He is smart enough to realize there are two more forwards on their way back from the injury list.

He is staking his claim to the second line.

All of the sudden, if that Speed line keeps producing, the idea of a WellY/Demo?Sammy 3rd line that can check AND score makes this Canuck fan very happy.

When they play to their abilities, we have a dangerous team here. Never mind the seeming embarrassment of riches in the system.

Thanks to Nonis for grabbing Grabs. He has taken a while, but it is obvious that there is something there. Just had to learn the game was more than scoring.

Still doesn’t excuse Patrick White, but then, nothing ever will! And he did bring us Ehrhoff…so there is that.

Don't see

how you can put a 30 goal man on the 3rd line, Sammy should be with the twins or on the 2nd or he’s wasted, rather see Raymond on the 3rd.

by yoata on Apr 3, 2010 10:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Cuz the guy we have there with the Twins has 35…and a longer record of chemistry.

The second line is all about speed, and with the current Raymond/Kes/Grabs configuration …they are one of the fastest lines in the league.

Sammy could be subbed for Raymond as an option. As would throwing Sammy up with the twins and moving Burr down to check more.

But a 3rd line of Welly/Demo/Sammy against the 3rd best from other teams? Two slick playmakers and a guy that shoots hard and from anywhere sounds good to me!

Seems like it would be an advantage.

Either way…its all about options.

Options

are good and you know AV will exercise them, but Wellwould is a fail, saddling Sammy with him is a waste, “just” having the speed of Kes and Ray/Grabs as lightning on the 2nd line with Sammy doesn’t mean they aren’t fast anymore, but a guy like Sammy needs to play a lot with good players to get the most from him.

Demo should centre the 3rd line if he’s not in the top 6.

Boy, you do enjoy the parsing of words. Me too.. ;-)

To sum up ;

Wellwood is a fail TO YOU. I would wager if you polled the people here that all follow the team just as much as you and I, you would get a much more positive review of his skills.

Saddling Sammy? If Sammy can’t play with all the guys that are on the Top 9, than he hasn’t come as advertised. His goals have come up and down the line up anyhow. So he can play with anyone in the Top 9. He has already done it.

Putting Sammy with Kes’ and Raymond does not mean that they “aren’t fast any more”. Of course. Did I say that? But they aren’t “the Speed Line”…they aren’t a line that has their coach and others talking about how hard it is to play against 3 guys that are all very quick. Sammy is an NHL player, but he doesn’t have that extra hear like most players in the NHL.

Having a pure Speed line like that had AV all lit up from the moment they got together. He was begging them to start burying the chances to make it too hard for him to break them up before. He sure isn’t going to now that they are starting to pay off.

Sammy needs to play with good players? So, Demo and Welly are not talented? Well, we know your opinion on Pudge, but I guess they are a couple of plugs…weighing down the masterful 2.5 mil a year player?

Last question, but what exactly is the problem with a line of those three guys? Welly and Demo can both make the puck dance, like to set up shooters, and can find the open places. (And Demo says he prefers playing the wing…) Hell, Welly has even shown a talent for getting his fat ass in front of the goalies as well!

What supposed sniper wouldn’t want that?

Don’t get me wrong, but although Sammy has had a career year…he is not the only player on the team to do that. Seems you took some of the love that should have went to the poor little fat kid and heaped it upon your favored fair haired child! Spread the love yoata….spread the love. All our Canuck kiddies are special in their own way. ;-)

Lastly, it balances out the lines nicely. Burr’ has earned being the man with the Twins. Sammy can always go there if they need to change it up anyhow…

All in good fun yoata…so please don’t take it the wrong way. Not trying to have an argument, just like passing the “talking stick” back and forth… It is funny that I could probably tell you which guys on the team are “yoata” guys and which aren’t. Its like you are our Don Cherry here…“he’s a good honest hockey player…a good kid…my kind of guy…”

Not that it matters anyway…we are just tipping cows here anyhow.

Your turn.

dan

I wasn’t intenionally “parsing” anything, and I fully understood your points without you having to spell it out again, I simply have a different opinion than you do and my reasons are sound if you’d care to look beyond your own for a moment.

Wellwood is not a FAIL “to me” he is a FAIL on the scoresheet, he has played plenty this year with guys that can finish and in offensive roles and yet he has done next to nothing to aid them to that end, that is in REAL terms, not excuses and undeserved platitudes about his “skills”. Again, I don’t give a fuck about “skills” this is the NHL, it’s all about what you do with your “skills” and Wellwould clearly isn’t interested in doing much with his.

So yes, Sammy, arguably the team’s 2nd best goalscorer would indeed be saddled on the 3rd line with that slug, and that would mean his potential would be greatly diminished, and it is significant potential.

Again on the “speed line”, I think people are falling in love with the idea more than the reality on that, you still have to combine your most complimentary players to get the most out of each. Thomas Holmstrom is a far worse skater than Sammy but he plays very effectively with Wings with great wheels, mainly because he does things that they don’t and vice versa.

What are you talking about, “now that they are paying off”? Raymond wasn’t on that line last game when Kes and Grabs lit it up, Demo was, probably because, while he’s far from lightning fast, he is a more complimentary player, so maybe we’re both wrong and he’s the one that needs to play the 2nd line, but it was just one game, I won’t be convinced Grabs belongs in the top 6 until he too shows up on the scoresheet consistently.

So, no, it isn’t about who are “my guys” and who aren’t, for example, I’m disappointed with Hansen’s progress despite increased opportunity recently, so he’s not even in my top 9 anymore at the moment, again, you have to get it done within a reasonable mount of opportunity, the problem on AV’s team is the HE clearly has his favorites and while some seem to take forever to get an opportunity, others who have had theirs over and over and over and done nothing with it, still get more.

When you consider all the pings and clangs he got after arriving here and last night’s culmination of hat trick (plus almost 4 and 5), you gotta feel like you’ve rec’d a true sniper and he’s for real and he’s on his way.
