"If there's one guy that I know who doesn't dive and doesn't embellish, it's Roberto Luongo," said Alain Vigneault. "That's the first I heard of that. We've improved on going to tougher areas and staying in front of the net, but I think we've done it in a legal way."

We're screwed
No, not really. But who is going to clear Big Buff out of the crease now? If the refs are going to be watching for dives by Luongo, Byfugilen will definitely push the envelope.
I bet we see a simultaneous goalie interference and diving call within the first 2 games, and lots of Buff getting in Luongo’s grill.

i bet Edler keeps Buff out of the crease this time around….

I’ll think they’ll use AHLberts to clear out BiFuglyAlien. It doesn’t take the ability to skate to move guys from in front of the net.
They’ll probably use Edler for his puck moving, goal scoring, and defensive positioning against the speedier lines.
That’s just my opinion though… the matchups might evolve as the series progresses.
Your Edler crush might be influencing your opinion. :)
Is Salo going to keep being great and getting no love or what? I get a little miffed about this shit.
Sure, Ehrhoff is an offensive defenseman, but he was one of the season’s +/- leaders? So, its not all the 44 points I think it was that he got.
Bieksa has gotten better since the injury. He and Alberts will be counted on, but Rome, one of the best min. price defensemen this season for almost ANY team, is probably able to play soon.
Besides, I haven’t even mentioned SOB having an overall splendid season. His game has taken a huge jump.
I get the talk about the D’…there is no Norris candidate like Keith. Our guys only played for Finland and Germany, not Canada like Keith and Seabrook. Did Hjalmersson play for Sweden? I know Edler SHOULD have.( 2 mistakes for the Tre Kroner on the Van roster that they missed! )
Beyond that, of course there is Campbell, coming off an injury well. But Hendry, Sopel, and Boynton are certainly not any better than the above mentioned Canucks.
It will be an entertaining series.
The matchups will be fascinating. Personally, I think if the 3rd line can produce at anywhere near their previous play, the Top 6 talent on both teams will be a wash. I know I remember one of those talking head shows telling me that the Canucks led the League in scoring from the back end. A few goals from them…some magic mittens from Welly.
Maybe Demo can wear his Slovak t-shirt under his jersey from here on in. Even some of that magic and the Hawks will be hard pressed.
Damn…almost there…Sat. can’t come fast enough….
""I felt last year our guys were ready to take that next step," Vigneault said. "We weren't able to get through Chicago. I feel we're even more ready now. Having gone through that experience, having learned from it. . . we're going to be better prepared to face the challenge ahead of us."
Ooops…gp off on a tangent and forget the very first thing.
Sami Salo has played huge minutes, had s few ups and downs, but overall hass been excellent.
With the all situations the big guy plays, having a goal, 2 assists and a +4 through the playoffs to date is good enough for me.
If we get that much from Sami, we’ll be fine.
""I felt last year our guys were ready to take that next step," Vigneault said. "We weren't able to get through Chicago. I feel we're even more ready now. Having gone through that experience, having learned from it. . . we're going to be better prepared to face the challenge ahead of us."
I agree with everything you said regarding Salo’s stellar defensive play and Edler and O’Brien’s step up to the next level.
My point was that if you have a 260+ lbs guy standing in front of your net, you need a big ass dude to be able to move him. All of our D could check his stick and get position on him, but the screen will still be there.
The only way we can make that guy scared to be in the crease is with pain and size and I think Alberts and O’brien are the most capable of that.
Alberts? Yeah..no. He’d take penalties and be a fool. Like Bieksa said today, the Canucks have to box in front of Lou and keep Buttfugly out
by Sean Zandberg on Apr 29, 2010 7:18 PM PDT up reply actions
He’s been penalty-free the last 2 games, he may have turned a corner in that department.
Besides, I think most of his penalties have been from being out of position or slow. Moving Buff away from Lu wouldn’t be a task that involves much skating.
Poutine & Meatballs
I don’t trust him yet. That’s just me. If Rome is ready I can’t see why AA doesn’t sit anyway

I wouldn't think of it as not being concerned about the canucks
They’d be foolish to think that. But you can’t blame them for not wanting to face the Hawks. We flat out spanked them in the season series. Even the one game we lost, they were utterly dominated up and down the ice, outshot by 20-30, but Nabokov played the game of his life.

So with the East being beyond what anyone could have foreseen who’s got the Habs beating the Pens?
I do
i’m going with the Habs making the Cinderella run to the SCF’s, only to lose to the Western champ (ideally the Canucks).

The Pens are much more well-rounded than the Caps.
I don’t think the Habs can beat them.
Poutine & Meatballs
Yeah that is true. But if Halak keeps this up you never know
by Sean Zandberg on Apr 29, 2010 7:26 PM PDT up reply actions
I see Halak stealing one, maybe 2 games in this series, but Pens are much more willing to get dirty goals, rebound goals. Guys like Staal should have a big series.
With that said, they’re going to have to get shots on net. Montreal just puts up a damn wall up in front of Halak, making SOG a pretty rare stat.
by Vancouverguy on Apr 29, 2010 9:43 PM PDT up reply actions
The Pens also have patience and full-team play. Crosby doesn’t do the “HEEERE I come to save the DAAAYYY!” thing – he uses his teammates to better effect the later the game goes.
Cammalleri is going to need to keep up his scoring pace, and Gionta and Gomez are going to have to do a hell of a lot more for Montreal to get through. Moving Moen up to the first line was inspired, though…

Diving question?
I have to ask since I am a hockey neophyte (means newbie, I had to look it up but wanted to sound kind of smart so I used it.) I have only been watching seriously for three years now and there seems to be a lot of talk about diving and embellishment everywhere out there from the infamous Burrows/Auger fiasco, Luongo, Crosby and list goes on.
Coming from a baseball background I’m thoroughly familiar with bush league play etc. That being said…If you watch a game you can see many players, respected players, on every team out there “pushing the envelope” of the rules in one way or another to gain an advantage why is diving so looked down upon? I mean if Holmstrom and Buttfuglyn can live in the crease outside the rules why is Luongo embellishing it to draw attention to the player in his crease such a big freaking deal?
I’m not trying to start a shit storm here just an honest question??
Personally I’m not a fan of diving/embellishment.
Sorry if grammar sucks I didn’t feel like previewing it….:)
it’s dishonorable and can makes refs look like fools. Buffy can live in the crease all he wants, but if he physically hits Lou or impedes his ability to stop the puck then he’ll get a penalty or a goal can be disallowed. Problem is, the refs don’t catch everything, so some players embellish to bring it to refs’ attention. The refs may fall for that a few times, but it embarrasses them. It’s an integrity thing.
by Sean Zandberg on Apr 29, 2010 7:36 PM PDT up reply actions
Thanks Sean
I can buy that. I am guessing then one of the D men is given a little more leeway to clear the player out of the crease if the goalie isn’t trying to win an Oscar?
well, a lot less leeway than they used to have. Back in the day the goalies would put a 2-hander across the asshole’s ankle. Now you crosscheck him and he falls you could be in trouble, especially if the guy dives….and now we’ve come full circle :)

Another !@#$ing newbie with another !@#$ing question
I’m having to follow online. I saw where two guys for Detroit and one guy for San Jose went into the penalty box at the same time. I suppose if Detroit scored in that situation, their reward would be to go down 5-3?
no
it would just count as a normal short-handed goal. the two penalties for the roughing just cancel each other out, so that would just count as even-strength. the 2nd wing penalty is the only special team occurence there.

I really don’t understand how getting hit in the face causes your legs/arms to give out like that.
I play a bunch of hockey and have been clipped in the face on occasion, I’ve never toppled over like you see in the NHL. I hate how this part of the game is turning into soccer.
