Less than a week ago, favored Vancouver was down 2-1 in its first-round series with Los Angeles and Canucks fans jammed radio phone lines and Internet message boards with calamitous rants.
In the middle of the near hysteria and panic from a city that has had its heart broken too many times by this hockey team over four decades, there stood Alain Vigneault. Like a man yawning in the middle of a tornado, the Canucks coach calmly and confidently predicted his key players would raise their games and the Canucks would be fine.
And, of course, that's exactly what happened. Now, Vancouver is hoping to wrap up its first-round series tonight with a road win over Los Angeles. The Canucks lead the series 3-2.

Good article. I’m glad Gillis gave AV a chance and that the two were able to work together – AV seems like a very level headed kind of guy, which is what you need to be in the Vancouver market.
I’m glad I can enjoy watching the Canucks from across the country and not have to deal with hearing the so called “sports talk” shows and the call-in “fans” every day. No wonder everyone hates our fanbase. The majority are complete bandwagon assholes who scream that the sky is falling at the drop of a hat. I find it almost comical, and always quip to my dad after a loss (who is out west) that the phone lines must be going crazy. And indeed they always are. Of course, I blame the media for most of the flame-fanning, but hey, they’re all assholes too, so what are you going to do?
