A Bit of Squid - April 23rd
Well, tonight is Game 5, and fortunately for the Canucks, the series is even at 2 games a piece. After a horrible Game 3, the boys started making drastic improvements, including taking a few less penalties, actually killing off a few of them, and finding ways to finally score a bit. Tonight, they are back at GM Place, and there is still lots of room for improvement. The Kings powerplay is still a strong force that needs to be shut down, and Roberto Luongo still has lots of critics he needs to prove wrong. As for our offense, they need to figure out how to get sustained pressure in the Kings' end of the ice. Hopefully, the home crowd will be able to help keep the momentum on the good side.

PS: This is going above the jump to make sure everyone sees it. Lots of people have been continuously asking in the last while why we're not calling up Brad Lukowich. The answer is simple: he underwent shoulder surgery and is out for the rest of the season. Now please stop asking.

Erhoff played really well, but does he really compare favourably with Green, Doughty or Keith?
(Mind you Keith was awesome throughout the season, except for the last month-ish or so. )

I found one interesting article on Lawrence Nycholat being called up, but you map have mentioned that in a previous squid.
actually, the only time i’ve mentioned Nycholat is in the one link i added to this squid just a couple minutes ago.
refresh your page and see if it’s the same one. 6th-last link.

Drew Doughty FTW
Having seen him up close and personal for four games, he deserves it. He’s incredible.
Green wouldn’t have made my top three at all.

I don’t think Doughty should get it. I’ve been impressed, don’t get me wrong, but seems like people get enamored by his youth and quick ascension up the ranks and thus overrate him. He’s not as good as Keith (who was a lock as of the OLY break, but lost that lock due to poor play after the break, I think).
Who could replace Green, I ask you? I got Green, Keith, Doughty, with the last one the only one who may not be a finalist. And maybe I made a homer pick, but Green wasn’t bad at all pre-break and was terrific post-break. Defensively especially.

Doughty: second highest Qualcomp on LAK (Green is fourth on the Caps) and had the highest relative Corsi for LAK d men (Green was behind Corvo). In regards to both Green and Keith he has a better shooting percentage and lead all defensemen league wide with five game winners. Also Doughty has a 1.95 GAON/60 in contrast to 2.36 for Green and 2.77 for Keith. It’s a bit of a mixed bag but I see Doughty as better “all around” than the other two and also doing it on a team that has less skilled talent around him than Washington and Chicago. And I do think age and poise has something to do with it, similar to Myers for the Calder.
In truth, I don’t know who would replace Green and I’m certainly not saying he’s bad…far from it. In fact, I barely see him play as it is so my opinion is biased. More proof of that is the Olympics snub (which I recognize has zero effect on this decision) I also think about in regards to Green. Stevie Y and Mike Babcock are smarter than me.

Shea Weber?
He’s had a fantastic year. He obviously doesn’t have the offensive numbers of the other three, but he makes up for that with his physicality and overall defensive game.
So it looks like you guys will be up against the Flyers. It would have been a hell of a series with Gagne and Carter in the lineup but I think you guys will roll.

For those curious about where our best defenseman (Hoff) falls in, he also had the highest rel Corsi on VAN’s blueline (10.6) and a lower GAON/60 (1.87) than Doughty. However Hoff’s qualcomp is second to last (last being Alberts), trailed Edler and Salo in defensive zone starts and Edler in offensive zone starts. More offensive prowess than most, but sheltered by AV (if you go by the numbers).

I don’t for a second believe in the Lukowich shoulder surgery reports. I’m pretty sure it’s a conspiracy by the NHL to ensure that Andrew Ahlberts ends up going back to the eastern conference. Also, there’s a conspiracy afoot to paint canucks fans as worse than Wings fans, although I’m more convinced that that one comes from the US Automakers and not the NHL.

Absolutely epic.
Sal just goes and goes. Amazing stuff. Thx.
Samuelsson carries a Swedish passport, but Henrik thinks of his fellow countryman as quasi-Canadian. He plays with an edge and has lots to say to opponents on the ice.
