For years now, NHL on TSN host James Duthie has opined that any puck off a skate, kicked or not, should be a good goal so long as the skate blade remains on the ice (in order to promote safety and not having players dangerously flashing their blades in a heavy traffic area).
I've always resisted on that safety issue, but now, I cry Uncle.
Make 'em all count, unless the blade comes off the ice and use video review to figure that out. There'll still be some where it's tough to tell and there will still be some controversies but no more and probably less than those questionable "was the puck knocked in with a high stick debates."
But that isn't going to happen in these playoffs, so the Canucks are left to work on what they can control – taking fewer penalties, doing a better job of killing them when they do take them and getting better goaltending from Roberto Luongo.

Reading McKenzie’s column was like having that first cup of coffee of the day. Soothed my frazzled nerves, he did. I wasn’t aware that the rule had been tweaked to disallow goals ‘propelled’ into the net by a skate. Damn, there’s noone to blame but our underwhelming PK now. Le sigh.
Please allow me to adjust my pants, so that I may dance the good time dance, and lead the onlookers and innocent bystanders into a trance.
While I agree with the “train of logic”, the fact is that this is a goal that is a goal at many, many other times in the season, but was not a goal last night.
The fact that the man who made the call is an ex player and coach for the Kings is optically bad, if you are so inclined to think that way. I don’t like the fact that Bobby mocks people that might think there is something untoward. It looks bad, period. Regardless of what Bobby thinks of the man’s integrity, which I am not sullying. It just looks bad. Why does the NHL have a man that has extensive ties to one of the teams working the series to begin with? Calling those people that have a problem with that “tinfoil hat wearing” is a bit much.
The “new keyword is propel??” Are they kidding? The only other option besides stopping is running over Quick? Are we no longer allowed to go to the front of the net and get a pass? The man had two guys on him, checking his stick. The fact that today’s NHL tries to read a players mind as to intent is a little troubling as well. The fact that it was done by an ex coach and player is disturbing, in that the NHL thought that there would be no problem with the optics. Though…I guess that means I wear tinfoil on my head for having the temerity to question that at all.
But of course you are right Smo’. A PK that looked good enough at the end of the season that we were all marveling at how well Burrows and Kesler did that job, now performing at a better than 50% goals against clip is just unacceptable if you want to continue on in the playoffs.
One last thing. The comments about the goaltending needing to be better are justified on the 4th goal. But the three on the PK are not. He made the first save, and it seemed to me that his defense and forwards were not there all the time to clear the puck.
The Handzus goal especially.
But yeah, the 4th was bad.

Reporters asked Sedin how he could possibly have accomplished the feat.

I think I picked a good game to miss, Dan. Fans are frustrated, and are venting on anything and everything. I agree, that same play has been a good goal all season, but now Murphy is saying ‘no, we sent out a DVD, clearly defining what constitutes a good goal’. What a load. Everything the league does, every decision it makes, appears to be so arbitrary. No consistency what so ever.
PS We all know the league and NBC would be pissing their pants in glee if it came down to LA-CHI and PIT-WAS in the semis. Wooooooooo!!!!!!!

Well, see, that is what gets the whole conspiracy theorists going. Because having a market in LA that is just primed to get the “Chicago” treatment from the league ( promoted to the Nth degree as this big success story, with good young players…yada yada yada… )…would lead one to believe that it is easier to “screw” a market like the Canucks. We are already hooked. 300+ sellouts and all. You know that they know that they have this market LOCKED.
One might say that there have been several “interpretations” that have been given to our opponents ( a couple of AA penalties were weak, the O/T too many men that boggles the mind…)…but I am not going to go down that rabbit hole.
I will say though, that if there is something to the whole conspiracy, if I was Aquilini, I’d be pissed. How much has the Cdn. market paid to keep weak sisters alive? Only to get screwed.
Game 4 better at least be called down the line, or even slightly in our favor…if they are doing shit like that…of course.
BTW…another conspiracy theory…if they wanted to get weekend games for ALL the 1st rd. series all lined up for their NBC partners, they could do no better to ensure maximum market penetration by making sure LA won game two. ( No, I am NOT saying they did that…but you can see how these things get started! )…another call that could have NOT been called. By a linesman, of all people. Spread the blame around…

You are crazy, sir.
The West Coast is the Best Coast.
You are taking an example of talking about “conspiracy theorists” out of context Rudy…to call me crazy…sir.
Have a nice day…

I'd love to hear Murphy's explanation of how THIS goal is a good goal.

wow, good call on that one, hailstop!

Actually, I’d more than love to hear his explanation. I demand it.
I want some journalist to ask Murphy how that Bertuzzi goal is a goal, and Sedin’s wasn’t.
Maybe ‘twisting a toe’ is a criteria now…
True, these little excursions to Conspiracy town are fun, but the level of play has to get better.

I do believe now there’s a very real chance of foul play here. It’s just getting too ridiculous and one-sided. But I’m all for clarifying a rule so that it’s harder for the league to break the mould with calls like last night’s.
And of course he’s correct when he says it’s not the major problem with this team right now, and that a little attention to detail could make this a very different series even with the officiating.
Thats your interpretation! And his! Lets all go to Conspiracytown! ( Or just listen to TEAM 1040 when they open the lines…)

I wish I could still buy this, but the evidence keeps ‘a stackin’. Until it stops I can’t think clearly.
Why shift blame away from the team? It makes no sense. They stop being PK failures and we’re not having this conversation

There’s no shifting the blame, I’ve simply blamed both because both are relevant points in the series. I can’t say hypothetically that if we played better on the PK I’d be OK with bad officiating and stolen goals, because I don’t think I would be.
It’s the same as Luongo’s final stretch. People kept saying stop blaming Lu blame the D. But both were issues, why fix only one?
uh…

It does make one think. I disagree with the whole Conspiracy thing too.
But that puck was tipped by a high stick, as sure as the goal from Daniel was not kicked in.
I guess it depends which team you are on…

…and that one was a easy one to see on the replay.
I mean, the puck went exactly in the corner…to the point of grazing a post.
It went downwards from the tip…at about a 30 degree angle.
Meh…lets hope it evens out.
For our team anyhow!

Believe it or not, there’s a vocal portion of Red Wing fans who are prime conspiracy theorists, and they’re absolutely sure that the fix is in for Phoenix since they’re owned by the league. That call doesn’t exactly mesh with their theory.
Now I find out that LA is going to be favored and promoted. As a denizen of the west coast, color me shocked. It’s really unfortunate we’ve missed the playoffs for the last eight years, if that’s so; they really ought to have tried harder. And why did they let a Canadian team beat us in the finals in 1993? Sloppy, very sloppy.
If Bettman is truly a mastermind of evil, he needs to be better. Do you hear me, Gary? You’re on notice!
