Ryan Kesler a Selke Award finalist again
Mr. Video Game Ryan Kesler is in some familiar company again. Last year Kesler, along with Mike Richards and Pavel Datsyuk, were nominated for the Selke, given to the forward who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game. Datsyuk eventually won it, his second year winning the award.
Kesler has been nominated again for the 2009-2010 season along with Datsyuk and Jordan Staal. As I'm sure it will come as a shock to no one, Vancouver has never had a player win the Selke. But, hey, they never had an Art Ross winner either until this season.
Congrats Kes. Slap the 'C' on this guy anytime.

Attaboy Kes. Too bad Datsyuk’s likely to win it AGAIN.

EMM laziness. Brodeur’s Vezina nom, Datsyuk’s Selke shoe-in. I can hardly wait to see tomorrow’s nominations. The rant shall continue.

ugh
Datsyuk has done nothing to deserve the Selke this year. I’ll be upset if it’s not Kesler.

Datsyuk rebounded from a slow start, but if the media bias wins, I’d prefer Staal over him.

132 takeaways
to lead the league by a mile (again).
That being said, Kesler had way more blocked shots and way more SH TOI, Staal is an also-ran imo.

Yeah that seems fair
Those are more Reputation votes than anything. Howard or Vokoun should’ve been the 3rd Vezina nominee, but obviously Marty got the not out of reputation (Vokoun had higher sv% and nearly as many shutouts playing on a much inferior team, Marty is about 7th in average sv% and plays on the best team of the three Vezina finalists). Datsyuk gets it over guys like Travis Zajac or Nicklas Backstrom, just because he’s won the award more time. It’s probably Staal or Kesler though

I wouldn't mind him getting the "C".

Offseason wish ; That Lu would step aside as captain, deciding to focus 100% on raising the level of his game. Kes with the C, case closed.

think Gillis would do it?

Put the C on Kesler? Only if Luongo agreed to it. Stripping him of the captaincy, I don’t know. It worked out well for Marleau, didn’t it?

I think it’s something that you don’t ask Luongo – you tell him. He doesn’t concentrate on his game the way he should – tell him he’s too important to the team to be distracted with the pressures of the C, and that Kesler’s going to take it over.

I guess. If Lou’s upset, he can go cry in his $10 million next year.

me neither
the only problem i can foresee is if Lu would view it as a demotion. unlike a guy getting sent down a pairing/line or scratched based on a somewhat objective “level of play”, stripping someone of the C is basically a pure judgment call—“we don’t like your personality”. i think it’s gotta sting a lot more than a line demotion or getting pulled or something.

Lu can suck it the fuck up.
He’s supposed to be a team player. I refuse to worry about hurting the feelings of a hockey player who is making 10 million dollars next year. Kes is a leader who does not parse his words with the media. Everyone in the team respects him and he is universally hated/respected throughout the league. What else do you need in a captain? If Gillis/AV/Lu are worried about giving Kes the C because they’re worried about hurting the feelings of a goaltender who is making 10 million next year, then I worry deeply about the leadership state of the team.
