Well, that game didn't turn out the way we were expecting last night.  Sure, it would have been absolutely lovely to win another game 3-2 in overtime, but once again that stupid knob on the end of Roberto Luongo's stick got in the way.  For goodness sake, that's 2 games in a row now where that knob has become an overtime issue.  Game 1, it got stuck in Luie's pads and he was just able to get it out in time to set up for the next rush.  Game 2, it deflects in Anze Kopitar's game winning goal.  Roberto, the Canucks fan nation begs of you to chop off that knob!

Another knob that didn't help at all last night was Andrew Alberts.  Seriously, he's already taken 5 penalties in 2 playoff games for us, and it just so happens that 4 of 5 Kings goals are scored on the powerplay.  Coincidence?  Sure, maybe they've figured out how to beat our penalty kill (speaking of which, we really need Ryan Johnson back), but the best kind of penalty kill is to stay out of the box in the first place.

So the thoughts regarding the Caps game seem to be 1 of 2 options:

Option 1 – If you hate the Caps, it was the most blatant case of the league fixing the outcome ever.

Option 2 – It was inconsistent reffing with plenty of borderline calls, but the reffing was not to blame.

What’s the opinion of the good folks here at NM?

well, it’s a mixed group here. some like the caps, others not as much.

But for the most part it’s un-biased observers with no dogs in the fight, or at least relative to what I’ve been reading/my take on things.

Yep. EOTP got quite ridiculous—comments are worth a read if you click on that link, simply for the rebuttals and back-and-forth.

Caps Fans: the Hab fans hate you because you stole the Expos!

Realistically, don’t get all uptight and drop the chips on your shoulders. Your team is good but OV and Semin and big game chokers (Olympics) and Green can’t handle Gionta and Cammy in front of the net. I don’t see how you get by NJ or PIT.

by Rod Blogojevich on Apr 18, 2010 9:44 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions

I wouldn’t call Ovechkin a big game choker, and the jury is still out on Semin. Ovechkin is at something like 1.5 pts/g for his playoff career, and Semin has had his very good series and very bad series. There were so many problems with team Russia and so much of it started with the bench boss.

Unfortunately I think Green being absolutely atrocious in front of the net is starting to become a trend that is true. Last year I was willing to chalk it up to mono and bum shoulders, but I see no excuse this year.

Well I am impressed, you gave a good argument. I just like to criticize the caps sometimes because they are SO SENSITIVE! I don’t get it. But ya I was just giving you a hard time, Caps games are great to watch. don’t worry about the Habs, a lot of them are seriously bitter the Expos became the Nationals.

these guys are fine, they’re very fun to talk with.

For the reffing question, I’d wait until the review comes up over here. That’s about as good an analysis you’re likely to get.

Other than that, meh. I just think the defensive games aren’t good enough. Actually that much is obvious, 6-5 in a playoff game, ridiculous.

by rsm on Apr 18, 2010 10:26 AM PDT up reply actions

Ambivalent.

Admire their talent, but Semin slap-fights. Feel sorry for their defense, because the forwards sure ain’t helping.

Wow, I had no idea about what happened to Pyatt. I have to give props to people like him and Theodore for coming into this season and performing well. Definitely tough, especially with a job that can so often be very mental.

What do you read Missy… missed Sekeres’ post-mortem at G&M.

what i can tell you is that i never check the G&M, and only once in a while do i check C&B.
i usually just check the general stuff: NHL.com, TSN, Yahoo, THN, ESPN, Canucks.com, Vancouver Sun, and whichever SBNation blogs have relevance to who we’re currently playing (for example, i’m checking Jewels from the Crown and Battle of California all the time right now because we’re playing the Kings, and i’m not checking C&B because the Oilers aren’t even in the playoffs)

Why don’t you just set up a Google News or a Bing news alert? Then you’ll basically have your pick of everything Canucks related from anywhere on the web? Seems like a lot of work to check all the sources you seem to check manually?

well, there’s a lot of sites that are horribly unreliable and biased. the ones i check are continuously better writing.

However, that post over there is pretty sweet.

Tony Gallagher weighs in on the oofficiating in the Caps and in the Canucks games here, calling it ‘one for the conspiracy theorists’

Money quotes:

Odd how that happens, sort of reminds you of how a team threatening to take a big lead in nationally televised NBA game suddenly runs into weird offensive fouls and travelling violations while the trailing team seems to be able to pull a gun and not get a foul.
Because to think things are really going down this way would cast serious aspersions on the officials involved in the games mentioned and we could never do that, not after watching for years when nothing like this would ever even occur to anyone.

They all just have too much class really to let pleasing your boss change the way they see a game. It’s just too much to take seriously. So we’re not doing that, never.

something else to consider, however, is that this article can also be grouped into that category of blowing things out of proportion.

I’m pretty sure Gallagher meant that article to be taken tongue in cheek, while planting seeds for thought.

I’m almost positive that the Province actually hates the Canucks and hockey fans in general. There is not one single media outlet that does more to damage the credibility of Canucks fans than the Province (with the possible exception of the CDC message board :P ). People all across hockeyland think we’re whining douchebags who plan parade routes and scream the sky is falling all the time, purely because of articles by these nimwits. Damien Cox would fit in well at the province, I think.

The Canucks are going to take penalties. It’s not that we need Johnson back as much as the entire PK units need to execute better. Anze had all the time in the world to do whatever he wanted with the puck before he scored.

Sure, Balls blocks a lot of shots and that’s great, but the biggest concern for his return is that we have Kesler out there laying in front of everything. No word on his status yet.

Hmmmm……so I shouldn’t submit my plannned parade route?
