Around SBN: Lance Berkman Could Have Torn ACL

Looks like Matt Pettinger is the newest doghouse victim. He was on the ice for both Kings PP goals against, and was benched after Modin scored the 2nd Kings PP goal. Michael Grabner was practicing on a line with Rypien and Bernier today, so it looks like he will draw in for game 2.

Despite all the backlash against Andrew Alberts over taking the 2 penalties last night, both costing the Canucks goals, consider this:

-He was the only Canucks player to give LA PP opportunities last night. Where's the PK? The Canucks will take more penalties than that in the coming games.

-Alain Vigneault said this about Alberts: "Alberts has done exactly what we expected when we got him. He's a depth defenceman who is physical and can move the puck." There you have it. AA has AV's vote. I didn't think Alberts was all that bad last night. I think he continually improves in a Canucks sweater.

More on Alberts and a possible Aaron Rome return here.

i was expecting the lineup changes, but not the explanations for why the goals weren’t alberta’s fault.

Alberts was trying too hard, IMHO, looking to make an impact. He needs to just settle down and play within himself and he’ll be passable. I hope.

Oh, and Salo had a maintenance day today…..already…..guess that explains why he was so slow to get up and cheer after Sammy had scored

We have loads of incentive to finish this series quickly, if we can, so as to rest up our wounded, esp the d-men.

my guess is that they were showing the live play on the jumbotron, and he didn’t want to have to lean over and try to see past SOB.

He played his ass

off last night. He and Edler were very good. Don’t blame him for getting some rest since it was OT and he had played so much.

bah! My point is that Salo…the usual culprit is ailing from something…once again and gets a day off. As great as he plays he is unreliable. I do blame him for getting rest. He’s fragile and it fucking annoys me (referring to section)

I was just

talking about him getting some rest by sitting on the bench while the other guys were up watching the play.

I’m not a fan of Alberts, but yeah it is fair to say that he was okay except for the penalties. That major was brutal though, basically an elbow to the neck/head. I appreciate the intensity, but like casual said, he just needs to settle down and not try to do too much.

not defending hits from behind, or claiming that Richardson had it coming, when he turned his back knowing Alberts was in tight.

It was tough to know where the line was going to be drawn based on the flow the referees were allowing each team to carry. borderline hits (and obvious infractions) were not called on both sides. Alberts was committed to finishing his check; without the high elbow, it would have been a 2 minute minor at worst – at best, a hockey play a la Tyler Myers.

by ChuckinNux on Apr 16, 2010 3:36 PM PDT reply actions

I still thought it

was just going to be a 2 minute penalty. Didn’t think it was that bad. I think Alberts was unlucky that the guy bled. If there was no blood he finishes that game.

Yeah…I thought a minor too.

But Richardson got the five because of the fact he was “hurt”.

Miraculous recovery too!

I saw Alberts as guilty guilty guilty on that hit. He brought his arms up with the hit. It wasn’t as “last second” as I’ve seen from other boarding hits

by Sean Zandberg on Apr 16, 2010 5:07 PM PDT up reply actions

After the replay…I changed my mind.

It happened quick. The guy is quite a few inches shorter than big AL’…

Though, he shouldn’t have got the arm up. He doesn’t do that, and its different in the end.

I guess I am just saying it looked worse at first glance than after further review.

Bringing his arms up made it worse, but I changed my mind on this “leaving his feet” nonsense. His skates came off the ice, but that looked more impact, and less intent.

Rome will probably be in Saturday anyhow…!

That was easily a 5 and a game. When I saw it, it was a no-doubter. If the NHL wants to punish the Canucks for that hit they should force us to play him the next game. That’s a bigger penalty than suspending him. You could say he played decent besides the penalties but I didn’t even notice him other than the penalties. Anybody could fill his place. I’d rather have Oberg play.

If alberts stays with the team after the post season he’s gonna need a nickname. I’m personally partial to Pylon, as we’ve been using it in reference to him almost exclusively…

I say Goose.

He is like SOB before he got better.

So, we send him out with Shane “Maverick” O’Brien, and get him on the SOB plan.

I know you can’t coach speed, and pylon is apt occasionally, but since he has been the NM whipping boy, I have tried to watch him closer.

He has gotten steadily better since he came here, within his limitations. I am not willing to totally throw him under the bus yet.

Maybe instead of pylon

we could call him Pile On since that’s what most Nucks fans seem to do. Pile On when a D man makes one mistake.

Thank god. I had him in my playoff pool (over Wellwood… ugh…) and was shocked he wasn’t playing last night.

Alberts

To be honest, I have a bit of a problem with the way that he’s getting run around here. He didn’t cost us the game last night, we won. He played a decent game to that point, and the referees were letting everything go (I was shocked that Edler didn’t get a penalty when he skated in from the blue line to destroy Smyth in the corner the shift before). When the refs are letting everything go, people start taking liberties.

I thought it was crazy that they went from “everything goes” to “major and a game” – even if it was warranted, which I think it was.

Also, I don’t like continually ripping on players, especially new players that have been brought in midseason and are trying to get acclimatized. Seriously. Alberts is doing the best he can, and he’s improving rapidly. Give him a bit of a break.

Demitra – rag on him all you want, it’s been 2 years, and he often seems like he’s not trying. SOB – he’s been routinely making it clear he’s less concerned about the team than he is himself. But Alberts is trying, and we’re going to need him before this is all done. So let’s give him a bit of a break.

Knights, Canucks, Dolphins, Jays and Raptors all the way.
