Don't Drink Alone: Transplanted Canucks Fans Thread

Suitcase_wideweb__470x3400_medium

I saw this over at SCH and thought it was a great idea, knowing full well that many Canucks fans are dispersed all over the map, some as far away as China and Austraila while others are across the pond in England or Italy. Over this past season we've had separate threads for Vancouver fans in the Northeast, Bay Area, Ohio, So-cal and Texas.

And here we are again, united in playoff fury. If you're one of the transplants like myself and want to see who is around your area who can take in the playoffs with you, please use this fanpost as your chance to list where you are and maybe find some other VAN fans, get together and cheer on Vancouver from afar.

Sweet god do I miss Miramar and Seatoun some days. Auckland and Hamilton…less so.

How are the Hurricanes, All Blacks and Black Caps looking nowadays?
I haven’t followed them as much since I left in ’07.

by Sneps-ish on Apr 12, 2010 4:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Hurricanes are having a rubbish season, they did alright last year I think
All Blacks are doing their usual winning all the games before the world cup, which is here next year. Can’t imagine the amount of pressure they’ll be under to win it.
Black Caps are still their inconsistent frustrating selves who struggle with top order batting. They’re ok and ODIs but suck at tests

Not much of a rugby fan but love my cricket

by andrew21nz on Apr 12, 2010 4:53 PM PDT up reply actions

That's the Black Caps I remember:

For some odd reason Daniel Vettori and Stephen Fleming always made me think of Markus Naslund and Trevor Linden. I miss a good ODI in summer.

I’m saddened Tana Umaga has hung up his boots, that guy would have made a helluva winger for Team Canada if he had picked up a Hockey Stick.

Where are you, Mt. Vic? Lower Hutt?
I was Newtown, Manners Mall, Mt. Vic and then Miramar for a few years.

by SteveNux on Apr 12, 2010 5:10 PM PDT up reply actions

exactly

plus, my only mode of transportations is the city buses, so with the canucks games ending at about 9:45ish there’s just enough time to go catch that last swartz bay run, but there’s no buses waiting on the other side for me, so i would have to get a $50ish taxi instead of swiping my U-Pass on the bus.

That would be a looooong day of traveling. It’s worth staying overnight in Vancouver… but yeah… it costs a bit of cash unless you have a place to crash.

Split a hotelroom with my Dad for the Colorado game and we drove on to the ferry so it cost more for the room/gas/ferries than the two lower bowl tickets.

And they didn’t even win the game! (it was close though) :)

That's a good question

I think they have the talent. Top line of Ryan Carter, Ryan Manitowich and Tyler Brough. Second line of Kimbi Daniels, Rod Stevens and Kris Stevens. The D looks solid with the likes of former Kootenay Ice Donny Lloyd and former 2nd round draft pick Gerard Dicaire. Not to mention Kip Noble. In goal they are solid. Clayton Pool has been added and looks very good. They have a lot of players though. And lots of the local guys, the ones who have been playing Flyers for a while, might not get to play much. Guys like Rod Stevens, Mike Hofstrand and others are from FSJ but don’t live here anymore or don’t play very much. The guys who are foundations of the team like Troy Hunt and Paul Wiens might not get to play much. I haven’t decided if I am in the go for the win camp or the play the home town guys and see what happens camp. I guess we will see how the tourny unfolds. Powell River could be fun to watch. A certain Steve Passmore has popped up on their roster. South East Prairie Thunder lost in OT last year and look strong again. I think it’s a wide open tournament but Bentley have to be the early favourites. They added Darren Van Impe and Darryl Laplante to an already strong lineup from last year.

Singapore

Just moved here from Shanghai. Shanghai was full of Nuckers who started pubs so not difficult to catch games. Those from Van probably know Malone’s, well Shanghai has had one for something like 12 yrs. Originally same owners, but they recently cashed out to Singaporeans. Nice little segueway, hoping I can find a few fans here so I can watch the games. A buddy here is an Oil fan, he’s now moved to acceptance so I imagine I can get him out for a few. Apparently they have NHL on cable here, otherwise good ol slingbox it is. Go Canucks Go!

IF/WHEN/SHOULD/PRAISE BE TO JEBUS:

Hypothetically, ‘if’ a certain 40 year old Western Canadian team makes the Stanley Cup finals versus the likes of the Caps, Pens or Sabres, my ass is on a transatlantic plane home, despite the protests of my wife. Aside from Zandberg taking the red-eye Greyhound down south from Smitty is anyone else planning a return trip to the promised land of GM Place? Yankee?

This may get very interesting (and I’ll take uber-loads of $#!^ for it as well) if the Caps and Canucks make it to the Stanley Cup Finals. I’ve already told EVERYONE in my family that if the Canucks and Caps make it to the Cup Finals, devote ALL of your resources combined to get me to Game 5 in Washington (and then perhaps some for Game 7 and then I empty out the bank). Manchester, England

Not so much transplanted, just an English fan :)

This actually links to something I’ve been wondering – those of us that didn’t grow up watching hockey (uh, assuming that I’m not the only one for whom this is true) what got you into the sport? My friend at uni started dating someone who played for our uni team and when she didn’t wanna go to training/games on her own she would bribe me with food and alcohol and after a while I started wanting to go to the games because it was a fun sport.

by eleccy on Apr 13, 2010 12:48 AM PDT reply actions

My best friend when I was 8 was a Red Wings fan and they had just won the cup in 97 so he got a replica stanley cup ring and wore it everywhere. One day he got into an argument at lunch and punched some kid in our class which left an imprint on his face. I thought it was the coolest thing ever and I started watching hockey because he said that’s where he learned that punching people was ok. I’ve been a hockey fanatic ever since.

by Optical Delusion on Apr 13, 2010 1:01 AM PDT up reply actions

When I was about 9 I moved away (to Napier – still in New Zealand) for a year. For some reason people up there were crazy about ice hockey. They all played roller hockey (no ice to play on) and I bought a Mighty Ducks tracksuit. When I moved back down I didn’t follow it, but only played the video games. Last year I watched the Stanley Cup finals (had been a Penguins supporter since playing as Jagr in a video game around 2000) and loved it so couldn’t wait to follow it for real this season. Wanted to choose a Western Conference team to support too…. so here I am. So this is my ‘rookie season’ but loving it and will continue to follow for years to come. Can’t wait to go on holiday over there and watch some games

by andrew21nz on Apr 13, 2010 1:45 AM PDT up reply actions

This is my ‘rookie season’ too with regards to the NHL. It’s been great, especially the insight I get from lurking around NM. I like that the Canucks are in the NW division, since I live in the NW of England. It seems like good logic to me :)

Classic Q’s, by the John Wayne Airport might be a good spot. They should have the volume up for a LA/VAN match-up until the Lakers start playing.

Rudy’s (on the Newport peninsula) is a great spot too – but I am not sure if they will be volume friendly yet. I may check it out there this Thursday and revert back to Q’s if Rudy’s isn’t friendly enough.

The bars here are problematic at best (unless the finals are on). I watch at home (via NHL package on satellite). So far, I’ve managed to catch over 70 games this year. Last year was great getting together for games with a Hawks fan during the Chigago-Van series. Tossing friendly gibes was far more entertaining than preaching to the choir!
