Update: Shane O'Brien will skate all by his lonesome self and miss the next 3 games for disciplinary reasons. Alain Vigneault said that it isn't only because OB was late for practice yesterday. There may be conditioning issues as well as more prior infractions. This is a tense relationship between management and O'Brien, and I don't like how it's this late in the season for it all to be going down. But that's just me. Who knows? It might light a fire under everybody's ass.

*****************************************

It's baffling to see the Coyotes a mere 4 points away from tying the #1 seed in the West, San Jose. But going through their stats (above) you can see what's going on. They are in the top half in every "major" stat except goals for. But that doesn't necessarily matter when you have a team that plays a strong defensive style under Dave Tippett and has a great goaltender in Jason Labarbera Ilya Bryzgalov. "Breezie" is 2nd in the NHL in wins, 5th in GAA, 7th in save percentage and 1st with 8 shutouts.

Star-divide

Phoenix will play the Canucks tonight and the Flames tomorrow night. So who do they start in goal against Van? Wouldn't mind seeing Barbie face his old team. Crazily enough, Jason Labarbera has played in 15 games (7-4-1) and has better numbers than Bryzgalov does.

Their offence is so spread out. Wolski, Doan, Lombardi, Stempniak, Vrbata..yeesh! It just becomes more important that a different Canucks line than the Sedins and Burrows also gets on the scoreboard. The Dogs are tops in the NHL when scoring first and leading after 1 period, so the Canucks need to get the first goal and dictate the play on these guys.

FYI: Wojtek Wolski has scored 5 goals and 7 assists in 12 games since being acquired by Phoenix at the trade deadline.

Lee Stempniak has 12 goals and 3 assists in his first 12 games with the Dogs. Insane!

Phoenix last played on Saturday, a 6-2 win over Colorado, and Taylor Pyatt had a Gordie Howe hat trick (goal, assist and a fight). He was the game's first star.

The Canucks have to build off of what was a decent effort against the Sharks. So they say anyways. The Avalanche, who are nipping at their heels for the NW Division lead, do not play Tuesday. They play the Ducks on Wednesday.

The Canucks can reach a new team record for home wins in a season (28) if they win tonight.

This will be Daniel Sedin's 700th game. Congrats to him for the milestone.

More FYI: Cody Hodgson and the Brampton Battalion will be playing in the deciding Game 7 against the Kingston Frontenacs tonight, the same time as the Canucks game. at 4:00 PST.

Alright...a couple clips for ya:

1. Remember what happened the last time these 2 teams played eachother? Oh dang!

2. On a more positive note, Rayzor did make this save:

You can actually hear Darren Pang wetting himself!

3. Rypien vs Carcillo from March 2008:

4. Pavel-Mania was born against the Winnipeg Jets, Phoenix's former home.

I’ve got third locked up…gets me my money back.

The part I shouldn’t admit is I drafted Kipper as one of my goalies(Lou the other). Almost killed me to do it and everyone knew it.

So the sonofabitch running the thing named it “Team Kipper”. Had to look at that shit all season whenever I logged in.

That sucks…I ended up with Bryzgalov, Rask and Varlamov as late picks to go with Lundqvist so goalie wise I was set. No need for any Flamers.

Heatley and Marleau have done the business for me and trading for Keith to go with Gonchar was genius. Patrick Sharp or Mason Raymond depending on match ups is my only week spot. But that’s cause Hemsky went down for the year.

Yeah. American sports have so many different stats. I’m studying stats (and love sports stats) so I’m not worried by it, I enjoy that part of the game, not done enough outside America imo. Soccer doesn’t really record assists which imo is dumb

I’ll look up stuff I don’t understand later today. eg. saves – maybe one snuck in from hockey :p

by andrew21nz on Mar 30, 2010 5:14 PM PDT up reply actions

I think they do keep track of assists in soccer. I know that Giggs has the most PL assists for United for instance. I actually love the fact that they don’t rely on stats for soccer. It’s beautiful the way it is and I don’t think it’s a sport you can overly quantify like baseball.

Fair point. I still think stats could be implemented a bit more then people can take them or leave them. It’s another reason why I love cricket so much, maybe the closest sport in terms of the amount of stats to sports such as baseball

by andrew21nz on Mar 30, 2010 5:28 PM PDT up reply actions

But what stats do you need for soccer other than goals, assists, time of possession and how many passes completed and attempted. Shots on goal and on target.

They do have those for the team but often the individual stats are missed. Maybe in the last couple of years individual stats (other than goals) have started to be counted more but hardly ever hear about the player who has had the most shots, or the most assists or the most fouls in the leauge – commenators usually don’t mention those things. I guess soccer is a sport where there aren’t too many stats to keep track of, which makes fantasy teams not quite so enjoyable

by andrew21nz on Mar 30, 2010 5:37 PM PDT up reply actions

They were saying at the weekend that Kevin Davies from Bolton is the most fouled player in the EPL. He is also the guy who has committed the most fouls. I see what your saying cause it is rare that you hear those stats. But like I say that’s what I love about the sport. They pass in those beautiful shapes, little triangles and the fluidity of the game with the way the offside rule is setup.

Yeah I’m a big fan too, my second favourite sport after cricket. Haven’t watched much of the EPL this season. Wellington has a team which plays in the Australian league so I often go to those games

Yeah you gotta go to the local games. I don’t have a local team since I am so far from Vancouver but if I lived in Van City I would go to as many Whitecaps games as possible. I’m a big AFL fan do you get many AFL fans in New Zealand?

It gets more TV viewers in the US than any other country including Australia. That’s partly due to having 6 times as many people but still. I watch every week. Big Hawthorn fan.

Where do you get it, on the dish?

I look for the AFL on my cable package, but it is spotty on TSN and SNET. I love what I see though.

I love the simplicity of the football stats too Section.

But I would imagine that the teams keep track of all sorts of stats that aren’t official.

I found it pretty easy to pick up, and am just learning the fouls. I love the toughness of it.

Christ, they have a fight and just play on around it!

Just basically pick or pre-rank the highest ranked players and you’ll come out with a decent team.

The great thing about fantasy sports is that it gets non-fans or casual fans to into the sport a bit. It’s worked for me in golf and baseball.

Especially if the Bruins lose in OT/SO

Don’t you just hate it when that happens? Happened to me on multiple occassions. I’d leave Tim Thomas out after he played crap and he’d get a shut out or I’d bench Pavelski and he’d score 4 points

2-1 Canucks Grabner GWG (he’s gotta score sometime, right???)
