In beating the Red Wings 6-3 at Joe Louis Arena: Alex Burrows added to his career-high in points and tied his career-high in goals with his 28th; Henrik Sedin recorded his first three-point game since he had four of them in January; Aaron Rome was plus-3 while Nicklas Lidstrom was minus-3; Ryan Kesler, before he scored twice, got a loud ovation in an opposition rink for the third game in a row.
And Kyle Wellwood scored in back-to-back games, while Mikael Samuelsson scored his first goal against his former team, edging to within one of his career high of 23 which he set in 2005-06 with the Red Wings.
Other than Henrik Zetterberg scoring his 200th career goal, you could say the Red Wings went down to, if not in, history.

Call me kookoo, but I think Kesler’s roadtrip ovation streak ends on Friday. Just a hunch.
Please allow me to adjust my pants, so that I may dance the good time dance, and lead the onlookers and innocent bystanders into a trance.
and Ladd and Byfuglien are going to come out and hi-5 Kes at centre ice.

On another note, Kesler has been playing awesome on the road. He’s definitely continually increasing his value.
He takes the hometown discount or he’s dead to me! haha

There are all kinds of wrong with that. Same with Samuelson getting paid even more than him.

nope.
definitely not.
my question is who are the next superpowers? washington seems poised to take the east, but the west is still a gongshow….

Chicago looks like the team to beat this year but with all that payroll increasing next year, I think it will look like a different team come this time next year. Sharks always look strong but look for them to lose in the first round like usual.
I can imagine a period with no superpowers, for the next few years. Things could be up for grabs, for whomever wants it the most.
Los Angeles, CA
Washington, Pittsburg, Chicago and San Jose are the obvious contenders, but only Pittsburg has proven that it can go the distance.
So, the Canucks can only benefit from this parity, since they look like they will be pretty much the same team for years to come. Just one step away from being a contender, but never quite there.
Los Angeles, CA
Phoenix and Nashville will win the way that Carolina and Tampa Bay will :(

That reminds me of how a few years ago Edmonton went all the way to the conference final, out of the blue.
Los Angeles, CA
playing the Finals without Roloson, who got them there. Anything can happen when a team bonds together and all the pieces fall into place

That San Jose line for Canada was pretty weak in the last two games of the Olys (aka the medal games). Something about those guys and the Sharks… they just can’t step it up when the stepping needs up.

I think Washington and Chicago will be unstoppable this season.
Ottawa has been good in the regular season, but I get the feeling that they will fall and fall hard, either in the playoffs or right before. This coming from a long time Sens fan (although primarily Canucks fan, was born in Ottawa though).

The end of the Detroit era? That’s incredibly ludicrous. Datsyuk and Zetterberg are what 31 and 29? There are still plenty of good years left there and they have Franzen as well. Bring in a goalie and they are right back up there next year.

Has Osgood never been good or is he just regressing A LOT?
Or is he simply too old?

People have been ripping on Osgood for being not so good forever. But he’s been to 4 finals and won 3 cups. So…. yeah he was good.

I’ve always thought of Osgood as the Saturday Night Live of goalies. You know how people always say “SNL is kinda lame now, but it used to be better”? Well, people have said that since I was in Jr. High School in like 1980, and the show started in 1978 or so…SNL was NEVER as good as it used to be…right from day one. But it’s always had SOME spectacularly awesome skits, and those are what everyone remembers. Osgood is like that.

Rafalski and Lidstrom aren’t so young… and I don’t see them having great youth to fill in on D.

Lidstrom was drafted by the Wings in 1989.

Hockey Futures has Detroit ranked 12th in terms of organizational depth only 2 spots behind the Canucks. If they don’t have D men in the system they can afford to go out and get them.

I will no longer fear the Wings. Until next year, at least.
Please allow me to adjust my pants, so that I may dance the good time dance, and lead the onlookers and innocent bystanders into a trance.
Wings seem to be as good a Lidstrom. When he was flying, they were unstoppable; when he was injured, they were lousy.
Is he just getting old now? Is it as simple as that?

I think that’s part of the reason.

Let's put Cory Schneider on eBay! ...
… cuz now Philly and Detroit will both be looking for a good, young goalie prospect for their future.

Seems like the entire Canucks team got a nice recharging of the batteries during the Olympic break. I think the Olympics made Kes a better player in that he realized personal success on the biggest of world stages. I also think the Olympics catapulted the Loooouuuu sound, whenever Lou touches the puck, into the realm of fable.
It’s too bad the playoffs didn’t start right now

After Burrow’s goal, and especially their third period last night, I think the Twins are back too.
They had the chemistry once again. It never really left, but really, it was a nice tip by Burr, but that goal was classic Sedins.
Their Olympics were fucked when their silly coach ( who basically picked the team ! ) said “you play with Weinhandl instead of picking Samuelsson”.
Which, from a Canadian POV, was great. Because the Sedins with the right linemate, and utilized as a 1st line ( they were pretty good late when their coach decided to put Foppa on their wing too…why it took him until the last game is beyond me! )…would have gone farther than playing with the KHL plug they did.
The Twins are fine!
"Of course you know, this means war!!"
Bugs Bunny
Sedins are fine.
I was just commenting on the game thread yesterday, it’s the first time in many games, (probably since the start of the road trip), that Sedins actually had quite a bit of room to play, to cycle and break the D down. Over the last 8 games, they’ve just been stood up and stopped before they can get in the zone.
They were screwed as soon as they were assigned to play with a stiff, who used to play with them 10 years ago. Can anyone imagine the damage Sweden could have done, if they put Franzan on that line instead? They looked solid when the coach finally smartened up and put Franzan on the Sedin line. If they wanted chemistry, at the least they could have taken Sammy. Their loss is our gain though. Sammy is playing like he has a fire lit undre his ass, and I’m liking it!
I dont disagree that they’re fine…i just dont think the olympics really helped them.
"Hope you like pancakes, Norway..."
I’m glad they missed a medal. Now they can focus on winning silver…Stanley Cup silver
