Ovech Misconduct (#3)

So Alex Ovechkin got another game misconduct for a hit from behind on Brian Campbell today, back in the first period.  That's his third game misconduct of the season (I believe no one else in the league has more than one).  If it were anyone else, there's no question a suspension would ensue.  A clear repeat offender in terms of dangerous play.  However, it being Ovy, who knows, double standards and all.  BUT... as a Henrik Sedin fan... I hope they suspend him big-time!  Hank for scoring leader!

Heh, I didn’t even think about the scoring race. It was a punishable hit but seemed over the top to toss him. Par for the course with NHL officiating really.

It was a brutal play. He was clearly behind him and shoved him head first into the boards. Beantown is right. If this was any other player, the book would be thrown at him. Especially since this is his third misconduct this year. The league has been all talk about head shots but you can’t let hits from behind go unpunished either.

23.3 Fines and Suspensions – General Category – In regular League games, any player or goalkeeper who incurs a total of three (3) game misconduct penalties in the "General Category" and exclusive of other designated categories, shall be suspended for the next League game of his team

From the rules.

However, look for this to happen:

Any request by a Club to have a game misconduct reviewed and rescinded by the League must submit their request in writing to the League’s Hockey Operations Department within 48 hours of the conclusion of the game in which the game misconduct was assessed.

So don't get violent and don't get caught with your head down, the night she stole the moon.

Nice work on digging up the rule.

The next Caps game is Tuesday so let’s see how this plays out. They’ve pretty much locked up the #1 seed so maybe they won’t bother appealing and let Ovie sit a game.

Rule 23.5 of the NHL rulebook states: “Any player or goalkeeper who incurs a total of two (2) game misconduct penalties for stick-related infractions, Boarding – Rule 42, or Checking from Behind – Rule 44, shall be suspended automatically for the next League game of his team.”

From puck daddy. And it is his second boarding misconduct.

So don't get violent and don't get caught with your head down, the night she stole the moon.

Go Hank! Get a 6 point game! That’ll teach Ovy.

What was OV thinking? Gad, that’s dangerous stuff.

by Sean Zandberg on Mar 14, 2010 3:04 PM PDT reply actions

And some weird rule where you’re allowed to board someone every 42 games may keep Ovechkin from a suspension. What a bs rule. Ok so if it’s been at least 41 games then I can go out and board another player without a suspension coming.

And Ovechkin is non-apologetic for that hit:

"I respect everybody," Ovechkin told reporters after the game. "We respect everybody here in the locker-room and outside, but over there (on the ice), we play for our team, and we make some hard hits, and sometimes, you get hurt. That’s hockey."

The guy doesn’t respect anybody on the ice. He doesn’t care if other players get injured by what he does on the ice. He was the same when he went knee on knee way back when. He’s a great player but dirty as hell.

by marcness52 on Mar 14, 2010 3:25 PM PDT up reply actions

wow. That’s a hockey game? Hitting people from behind head first into the boards is hockey? Going out of your way to go knee on knee is hockey? Guess it was Campbell’s fault for being in his way.

You know, coming into this season, I was 100% team Ovechkin and thought Crosby was a whiny baby. How this season has changed things. Now I think Ovy is a dick, and Crosby is a god amongst men.

Ovie/Lapierre

In my humble opinion, the hit was clearly not as bad as Lapierre’s. Lapierre’s was much, much later, and much more of a “directly into the boards” hit. Ovie got the game misconduct, which I thought was right, but more seems a little ridiculous. Campbell had just barely released the puck. Reckless, yes, suspendable, no.

Knights, Canucks, Dolphins, Jays and Raptors all the way.

by Jevant on Mar 15, 2010 8:28 AM PDT reply actions

Really? I thought the fact that he was behind Campbell and shoved him hard into the boards from about 5 feet out made that an extremely dangerous “hit”. Just because he shoved or pushed him instead of hitting him from behind doesn’t make it less dangerous IMO

Well… Dreger and McKenzie are both tweeting that they expect suspension is likely. So take that for what it’s worth (they tend to know their shit)

by Beantown Canuck on Mar 15, 2010 8:49 AM PDT reply actions

I just watched them both on a panel on the suspension.

The two of them said smart things…paraphrasing here…

Mac-“the two hits are quite different. Ovie’s hit felt more like a hockey play, and Lappierre’s most definitely did not….”

DoubleD- ’If Ovie takes one more stride, he makes that shoulder to shoulder, and we are not even having this discussion…he reached out and pushed instead…"

f the two, Dreger was most right, I think. I agree with Mac that they are totally different. The Nicholl’s hit, his arms were in the air celebrating what he thought was a goal. The definition of a helpless player.

Campbell had just dumped the puck, and Ovie was on him the whole way and getting closer, its why he dropped it. But Ovie should have just taken that last stride to get beside him, and the hit would have just been epic instead of dirty. Maybe a beat late, but it would not have been called.

Though, in today’s NHL, he probably would have still got boarding because a man was hurt…and it could be interpreted as boarding ( not by me…if he takes that last stride )…

But a push from behind is wrong there. Campbell knew he was going to get hit…and hard. He didn’t know he was going to get pushed.

Sorry Ovie. Two games is fair for you…and four is fair for Lapierre.

AO

has to be one of the dirtiest players in the game, Gonchar, Briere, Kaleta and now Campbell all felled by cheap"hits" in recent memory alone, if he wasn’t a star he’d be compared to Nichol, Downie, Tucker, etc, POS and remorseless.

He will put somebody in a wheelchair if he keeps this crap up.

Yeah but yoata he is sooooo much better than Crosby cause Crosby whines……uh……what’s that? Being dirty is worse than whinging? Never mind.

I forgot

the slewfoot on Peverly, the knee on Gleason, and the brutal HFB on Jamie Heward.

The guy is a fucking menace of the first order and obviously doesn’t give a rats ass about suspensions or what anybody thinks of his garbage play, I mean what will it take to get it through his fat head?

rec;d dat...

Even if he is Ovie. Tou know it will turn the Caps bench into a beehive and their will be other fights, or someone trying to jump in.

But yeah…Rypper, et al would be a start. Ovie would probably wear the shiner like a badge of honor ( got to agree with the Y-man…I had forgotten the cumulative amount! )

But he would at least have gotten some retribution.

If the Caps bench ever lets him fight his own battle…looking at you Bradley.
