NHL Trade Rumors and Hockey Blogs - SB Nation NHL Trade Deadline

Wednesday

-Via TSN, the Avs re-acquire Stephane Yelle along with Harrison Reed from Carolina for Cedric Lalonde-McNicoll and a sixth rounder.

-Via TSN, Steve Staios is taking the shuttle from Edmonton to Calgary in exchange for Aaron Johnson and a third round pick.

-Via TSN, Calgary trades Dustin Boyd to Nashville for a 6th rounder.

-Via TSN, Toronto gets Chris Peluso (related to Mike Peluso?!) from Pittsburgh for a sixth rounder.

-Via TSN, Ryan Whitney is the newest Oiler with Lubomir Visnovsky heading to Anaheim.

-Via TSN, Florida gets Mathieu Roy from Columbus for Matt Rust.

-Via TFP, Canucks get Andrew Alberts from Carolina. Details coming...Carolina gets a third round pick. We have more in a separate post.

-Via TSN, Carolinia trades Joe Corvo to Caps for Brian Pother and Oskar Osala.

-Via TSN, Phoenix adds Lee Stempniak for 4th and 7th round picks.

-Via TSN, Columbus trades Milan Jurcina to (or back to) Washington. Details coming...6th rounder in return.

-Via Sportsnet (about time they caught up with TSN), Buffalo trades Clarke MacArthur to Atlanta for third and fourth round picks. Not sure what year the picks are for.

-Via Sportsnet, Blue Jackets trade Raffi Torres to Buffalo. Details coming...Nathan Paetsch and - you guessed it - a 2nd rounder

-Via Sportsnet, Flames trade Curtis McElhinney to Ducks for Vesa Toskala. Now that's just plain funny. Vesa should be on a suicide watch shortly.

-TSN again: Eric Belanger to the Caps for...wait for it...a 2nd round pick.

-Via TSN, Tampa sends Jeff Halpern to Los Angeles for Ted Purcell and a 3rd round pick

-Hooray! Father Time Mathieu Schneider has been moved to Phoenix. Details coming... Vancouver gets Sean Zimmerman and 6th round pick from Phoenix. (g/t TFP). We have more in a separate post.

-Detroit sends Kris Newbury to the NY Rags for Jordan Owens.

-Via TSN, Peter Mueller to Colorado for Wojtek Wolski.

-Chatter seems to indicate that your Vancouver Canucks have acquired Yan Stastny. Details coming..Labrie is heading the other way. We have more in a separate post.

-Former Canuck Scott Walker heads to the Capitals. Details coming. 7th rounder going back to Carolina.

-Via Bob McKenzie, Edmonton claims Ryan Jones on waivers but all other players cleared, including Brad Lukowich.

-Nix another one: TSN has Aaron Ward en route to Anaheim for Justin Pogge (goalie of the future!) and a fourth rounder.

-McKenzie & Dreger are saying Dennis Seidenberg is heading to Boston. Not sure what the return is yet Dennis Seidenberg and Matthew Bartowski from the Panthers for Craig Weller, Byron Bitz and a 2nd round pick. So scratch another defenseman off the list.

-Skoula's Leaf tenure is short-lived as Burke tosses him to NJ for a 5th rounder in 2010 (Darren Dreger)

-The Coyotes acquire Derek Morris from the Bruins for a 4th round pick in 2011. (Five for Howling)

Star-divide

Tuesday

-Toronto Maple Leafs trade forward Alexei Ponikarovsky to the Pittsburgh Penguins for defenceman Martin Skoula and prospect Luca CaputiTSN story here.

-Edmonton Oilers send forward Cody Wild to the Boston Bruins for defenceman Matt Marquardt. Oilers press release here.

- McKenzie also reports Scott Niedermayer isn't moving at the deadline. Just in case you thought Vancouver would try and acquire him for the second third fourth time.

- Kent reports that the Islanders have sent defenseman Brett Westgarth to San Jose in exchange for future considerations

- Via Michael Russo on Twitter, The Wild have signed Marek Zidlicky to a three-year deal so off the market he goes.

- Just because the world isn't strange enough, Chris Chelios is a Thrasher. Seriously.

Monday

-New York Rangers claim Alex Auld off of re-entry waivers from Dallas.  After trading for Kari Lehtonen, the Stars chose to keep Marty Turco and cut Auld.  Just the other day, the Rangers claimed him off re-entry waivers so they could have a more stable goaltender backing up Henrik LundqvistAuldy is excited to be in NYC.

-Edmonton Oilers have send Denis Grebeshkov to the Nashville Predators for a 2010 2nd-round draft pick.  TSN story here, negative reactions from Oilers blog Copper & Blue here and here.  Meanwhile, On The Forecheck thinks this trade is leading up to a deal to send away Dan Hamhuis....

-The Florida Panthers have sent Jordan Leopold to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a 2010 2nd-round draft pick.  TSN story here.

-The Atlanta Thrashers acquired Evgeny Artyukhin from Anaheim Ducks for Nathan Oystrick and conditional pick in 2011.  Thrashers website press release here.

Good thinking on making one thread for all of this.

TSN is reporting that the Flyers are targeting Dan Hamhuis for Ryan Parent: Source

He’d fit in nicely on the Canucks and is a B.C. boy. Get off your ass, Gillis!!

yeah, i’ve noticed that too. waiting for the official trade to happen though, so many rumours will be going around.

Hamhuis to the Flyers

Might not be true (via On the Forecheck) as Nashville has asked around for Flyers players, but not Parent. So there’s a chance that Gillis can get Hamhuis

I think that Demitra might be something Poile would be interested in mainly as a rental. Chris/other OTF guys have mentioned they need a 2nd line center and Demitra could fill that void i guess (Colin Wilson is their long term plan i guess) and i’m guessing that more could fill in that void

well, the way i see it for the canucks, we need someone to put on a line with demo. bernier and wellwood aren’t doing too well this year.
we could use some help on defence as well. with mitchell still injured the way he is, and bieksa still rehabbing, we could use a defenceman for the playoffs.

I’m guessing that it’s possible to get a 3rd or 4th line center for cheap, but they’re starting to get even more expensive nowadays (Dominic Moore for a 2nd). But yea. Demo really needs better linemates, It’s probably much tougher to get the linemates than trade Demitra for another center better fit for a 3rd line role

The big rumor I am hearing, and from more places than just Eklund or I wouldn’t be writing this, is that the Nucks are interested in Andy Sutton and/or Aaron Ward. Thoughts?

I am just wondering what Canucks fans think about the possibility of adding a guy like Ward. He does have a tonne of playoff experience.

with that said,

aren’t we looking for a top-4 Dman given the state of Willie? I don’t think Ward would hold up in a top-4 spot.

i think we’re looking for maybe one or the other or both. we could use a defenceman, and we could also use help on the 3rd line.

yeah, it's being said, all right:
On the back end, the Canucks may be kicking tires on either of Florida Panther pair Dennis Seidenberg (28-years-old), Carolina’s Aaron Ward (37) and the Islanders Andy Sutton (34) – all are in the final years of their current contracts. But are those players an upgrade on what the Canucks already have in terms of defensive depth?

Not sure if anyone saw the Random Trade Generator

But the Predators blog, On the Forecheck, has a pretty funny Random Trade Generator. All the funnier because his random tool was twice as accurate as Eklund last year at the deadline.

Note: In accessing it to find the link, it said Jon Sim was headed to Vancouver. I’ll guess we can only wait and see.

Not sure if I’m comfortable pissing away second rounders for deadline rentals. Hamhuis > Sutton if you had to, but the whole thing strikes me like a Nonis move that doesn’t pan out and limits the team down the line.

I’m a little torn on that statement. I’ll take Mitchell over Hamhuis. Both are going to make about the same $$$. I think Mitchell is a better shutdown guy. We don’t need another offensive d-man in Hamster. Just a stay at home kinda guy.
I’m also under the impression that Hamhuis does not want to play here.

Schneider, MayRay (or Bernier), Grabner, Bieksa for Carter/Coburn.

Agreed. Raymond in particular is turning into a late-blooming great player. Besides, the Flyers have longer-term goaltending woes and that makes them weaker in a trade, cuz no matter what else your team does, you gotta have a reliable goalie, it’s torture when you don’t, and the other GMs all know it.

Not mention CHEAP goaltending as well since Red would still be on his entry level contract for another year and could be re-signed at a cheap contract when that is up since he has no NHL resume yet. Same goes for Grabner.

by Sean Zandberg on Mar 2, 2010 10:01 PM PST reply actions

So at this point I’m thinking that if anything, Gillis is just gunning for a depth defenseman to replace Mitchell for the time being (I thought Seidenberg seemed like a decent fit) and possibly a two-way third-line center to replace Wellwood (ie. McClement). I can’t really see the Canucks making a big trade deadline splash at this point, and I’m starting to doubt that they’ll trade Schneider before the deadline. Maybe GIllis will move him at the Draft or something.

by Canuckk on Mar 2, 2010 10:47 PM PST reply actions

All this yapping on tv about the Canucks needing a bonafide puck moving defenceman in order to keep pace with Chicago makes me ill. Gillis isn’t going to mortgage the future on someone like that. I tend to agree with you. Schneider may get moved at the draft instead.
No idea who or if he picks up 3rd line center help.
Schneider to Philly makes no sense. They will go after a proven NHL goalie. Schneider to Florida makes sense if they move Vokoun, with maybe a guy like Kreps or Stillman coming this way. Horton is going to cost an arm and a leg, but 1. he’s still injured and 2. I don’t think Florida trades him.
If anything I expect either nothing done or something minor today.
We shall see.

by Temujin on Mar 3, 2010 8:38 AM PST reply actions

Caputi isn’t anything to completely sneeze at. And they were losing Poni anyways as a UFA. I guess they basically decided they liked Caputi better than a 2nd round pick (presumably that’s the equivalent).

Not a steal by any stretch, but I don’t see an awful lot of downside for TOR. Might have been able to do a bit better, but if they really like Caputi or have him evaluated as a top 6 player, I don’t think it’s a bad move.

Personally, I view them as fairly similar, except Hartnell costs 4.2 cap versus 2.5 cap.

That to me makes Backes much more preferable. Especially considering the money that will need to be spent to keep Kes and MayRay.

Stastny will work hard for you when he’s out there. Skilled? Not really. But there’s hard work and grit and determination and other such things that we tolerated him for when he was with the Blues. The most tangible portion of his “hard work/grit/whatever the hell you call it” factor is his penalty killing ability, which is decent. Other than that, hope you guys aren’t looking for more than a 4th liner. Good luck with him.

I wish we had an answer for you, but we’ve never seen him outside of training camp. The majority of his time in the AHL it seems involved beating people. So you got some muscle coming your way, but if the Hockey Future reports are legit, then you’ll probably never see him on the Blues, at least not anything more than – as with Stastny – the fourth line.
