"I'm not talking about Cody Hodgson," Mike Gillis said from Boston. "He doesn't play for our team."
When asked what he made of Hodgson's statement, Gillis replied: "I don't care."
"[Hodgson] has some ideas of his own," Gillis said. "I haven't talked to him, so I'm not going to comment until then."

I'm not sure what side to take here.
Gillis is obviously pissed off and he’d be better served to stop acting like a 12 year old with his answers sometimes. I always get the impression that he never wants to discuss anything with the media. Part of his job is answering the hard questions.
That being said, I usually side with teams when it comes to making decisions regarding their prospects but I can’t help but to be sympathetic towards Hodgson here. The guy was injured while working out with Gagner and then was cleared to play by the Canucks when he really shouldn’t have been. It’s not surprising that Hodgson would want to bring in his own guys to look out for him when his health wasn’t handed as well as it could/should have been by the Canucks.
I agree cloutier. Gillis needs to step up and admit that his organization let this young man down. Gillis should agree to work with Cody to ensure that he is comfortable moving forward with Vancouver. If that means Hodgeson works out with people of his choice and he gets his own doctor to confirm advice provided by the Canucks Medical staff so be it. Is that really big deal?
I believe that any pro athlete should have the right to look after his own best interests. Hodgeson does not trust the Canucks organization and frankly who could blame him. It will take a long time rebuild his trust in fact it may never happen. It is possible that Hodgeson could play for the Canucks without a high level of trust if he is good enough and the boundaries for each side are made clear and respected.
Sorry Mr. Gillis you will need to eat some crow on this one.
Agreed
“He’s doesn’t play for our team.” “I don’t care.”
Screw off Gillis. He’s been universally lauded as the best prospect to land in Vancouver since at least the Sedins, so show a bit of respect and don’t intentionally go out of your way to piss him off.
Knights, Canucks, Dolphins, Jays and Raptors all the way.
Bizarre comment by Gillis, but
…this article lends a different picture than the Globe and Mail piece.
Specifically:
Cody Hodgson is cutting out one key part of his offseason hockey training regimen the past couple of years — London.
The Vancouver Canucks first rounder and last season’s CHL player of the year won’t return to the Dave Gagner-owned training centre at Western Fair this summer and hasn’t visited the facility since he began recuperating from a back injury that cost him five months of his hockey season.
“There are a lot of good trainers in Toronto,” the 19-year-old said Friday. “I won’t be working out with Mr. Gagner.”
Hodgson will play his second game since returning to the Brampton Battalion lineup tonight against the Knights at the JLC. He had two assists in 18 minutes of ice in his season debut Thursday against Erie.
Gagner, the former Knights assistant coach, is now the Canucks’ director of player development. He believes Hodgson’s decision to stay close to home was in the skater’s best interest.
“We talked about it, of course, and we’re in total agreement,” Gagner said. “Cody’s in Markham so it’s quite a commitment to come to London. Last year, he was down three days a week and staying at our house but I don’t live in London anymore.”
Gagner recently moved to Vancouver. Son Sam, an Edmonton Oilers forward, has a house in Oakville and daughter Jessica is playing for the Dartmouth Big Green in Hanover, N.H.
“I want, obviously, what’s best for Cody,” Gagner said. “He’s a hard worker. This isn’t a dictatorship. You offer suggestions and it’s up to them to decide what fits their needs.”
Hodgson will be a handful for the Knights and the OHL — if he remains healthy. He gives low-scoring Brampton a big boost.
“We’re a different team,” said Battalion GM-coach Stan Butler. “Cody’s presence gives us a huge boost but it’s not just that. It’s his leadership off the ice, too. We have a young 16-year-old goalie from London, Jacob Riley, who likes to stretch after practices and Cody is kind enough to wait around and drive him home after he’s done.”
Butler said he’s only seen one other player work as hard as Hodgson in the weight room — Boston Bruins blue-liner Zdeno Chara, when he was coached by Butler in Prince George, B.C.
“I have total respect for that guy,” said Knights defenceman Michael D’Orazio, who played minor hockey with Hodgson.
“My family has a cottage in Haliburton about five minutes down the road from him and I remember going to his place and he had all kinds of sticks laid down and he was stickhandling around all of them.”
I think the media is trying to turn this into something it might not be, but Gillis DOES need to smarten up and act like he gives a crap about Hodgson. Because the team’s actions to date have suggested the contrary, especially with respect to a kid who has always had a glowing background check.
Knights, Canucks, Dolphins, Jays and Raptors all the way.
Wow
we have a 19 y/o prospect with the maturity of a 40 y/o, and a 5 y/o GM with the maturity of a 12 y/o.
I don’t see any future for Hodg in a Nucks uni, fully expect him to be traded if not before the deadline then before next year’s camp, way to go Gillisgan!
Though some will surely continue to drink the Gillisgod koolaid, this guy has been a classless jackass from day 1 when in his introductory presser he completely disrespected his predecessors with ignorant comments about the team they built (virtually the same team he still enjoys today.

Yeah that seems fair
I agree that MG has handled this incredibly poorly, but like it or not for CoHo, I would be very surprised if they trade him. Who would they get back that would justify giving up a potential talent like his at his lowest possible trading value?
Knights, Canucks, Dolphins, Jays and Raptors all the way.
If he
dominates junior again his value will be right back up.
You really expect him to keep swallowing this crap from the organization that seems to prefer to aggravate things at every turn when all that’s needed is a bit of understanding and respect?

…just chill out. Unless any of us were there to hear the tone of voice and context, it’s a bit irresponsible to start throwing darts. Although there are some here who are pretty sure that they’d be better GM’s than gillis, the fact is that you’re not, and you don’t know all aspects to the story. Perhaps his words were out of line, but the intention wasn’t. Perhaps he was baited by the reporter, and if so, bad MG for biting. Perhaps he meant it as it sounds and he’s a douche. But really, I think the most obvious possibility is that mountains are being made from molehills.
2nd that ...
“ICE CHIPS — Canuck general manager Mike Gillis denied there is any rift between the team and star prospect Cody Hodgson. He said Hodgson is no longer training under Canuck player-development guru Dave Gagner because Gagner has moved to Vancouver. Gagner will continue to have contact with Hodgson, as he does all Canuck prospects, to monitor and help shape his development, Gillis said.”
Same sentiment as Max Curry’s link above, but a bit longer and more fleshed out this story from Iain MacIntyre
The highlights for me
Gillis told that reporter "I don’t care," but said he was referring not to Hodgson’s comments but the writer’s version of events.
If that’s true, it doesn’t speak very well of Matt Sekeres if he knowingly took Gillis’ comment that far out of context.
Hodgson also gave a clipped answer when asked about Canuck coach Alain Vigneault, who told The Vancouver Sun after Hodgson was returned to junior that the centre, who sought an independent medical assessment of his back, may have been looking for an excuse for his disappointing training camp.
That remark apparently upset Hodgson’s family, although Gillis said no one has expressed that sentiment to him.
So maybe the rift is between AV and Hodgson?
To me the situation is still so murky that it’s impossible to say with any confidence what the truth is. In fact, it’s quite likely multiple things are true at once. I do realize that is completely antithetical to the spirit of sports blog commenting.

Well to me
it’s just common sense, you say something like that, most people are going to take it as insulting, I mean how could you not?
Everybody knows

Yeah that seems fair
Definately, but was it an insulting dismissal or Hodgson’s off season training strategy or something Sekeres said? As far as I’m concerned, that’s simply unknowable.

I was referring to
what AV and Gillis both said publicly themselves when they sent Hodg back to junior.
I don’t think it’s that easy a thing for a 19 y/o kid suffering from a legitimate and serious back injury to get over.

Yeah that seems fair
How the fuck
would you know whether his intentions were out of line or not?
All we know is what he said, and it seems (almost) universally to be regarded as immature and out of line, not unlike his previous comments about CoHo and some other things his said as well.
Seems to me what he’s said is far more in character than out.
