Get Your Gold On Canada

Hat tip to TXCanucklehead for the well-deserved image
That was one hell of a game and I only saw a fraction of it.
Congrats Canada. Winning the gold on home turf must be a hell of a feeling. Enjoy every single second of it.
America has nothing to feel sorry about. They played just as hard and aggressive as advertised. Definitely a Burke team. Anyone excited for Sochi yet (assuming the NHL guys play in it)?
Selfishly, a huge congrats are in order for Roberto Luongo. Best goalie to never win anything you say? That died this afternoon. Time to ride that high into the NHL playoffs cap't.

You couldn’t possibly have scripted that game any better. If that game didn’t go to OT it wouldn’t have been as memorable imo.
definitely not the best game ever. Not even close. Sorry to be a schmuck……but the Salt Lake City game was way better
by Sean Zandberg on Feb 28, 2010 6:57 PM PST up reply actions
BULLSHIT!
You schmuck. Completely disagree. This game had so much more emotion and so much more drama… home olympics… home ice…. home city… home rink… home goalie… last event of the games…. chance to break the record for most golds ever at a winter games… revenging a team that beat us a week earlier and had us all down… all the shit talk on the internets and in the old media… going up two and almost letting the game slip… the shit talk all over Lou… the hype about the glories of Miller… the inner confusion of a Canucks/Canada fan of watching Keslord play so well for the enemy… then Sid the kid comes out of nowhere and wins it in OT… this game was a dream.

And it was a really good, tight, even game, played cleanly and well from start to finish. By both teams. An honour and a privilege to watch.

If USA doesn’t tie it to send it to OT it isn’t as memorable. The US team deserves a lot of respect for doing almost everything right these games. They did everything but win the last game and they only barely lost.
bah! You sound like Kypreos. You forget history too easily

And I won’t take it back either. Salt Lake was way better. Just my opinion

Jeez Zandberg how on earth can you possibly not think that was one of the top five hockey games EVER played??? That was frikkin AMAZING hockey. Salt Lake, 2002? Meh…it was a game…but not even close to this.
"Hope you like pancakes, Norway..."
What’s this top 5 games ever played stuff? I didn’t say that.
I disagree with your opinion. I liked the whoopass by Canada in Salt Lake on American soil. Like I said, just my opinion.
by Sean Zandberg on Mar 1, 2010 12:13 PM PST up reply actions
I’m with you Sean. Salt Lake was a better game. All three and particularly game 2 of the 87 Canada Cup final were better games etc etc etc. Best game ever? Come on. This is a classic case of the most recent game being given too much import when compared to older games.

absolutely, Section. Oh, and the final 2 games of the Summit Series were the shiz too. So was the Canucks-Rangers game 1 and game 7 in 1994. So was the Chicago-Pitts game 4 in 1992. So was the Canucks-Flames game 7 in 1994, game 4 of the 1996 Finals..etc etc

I wasn’t alive in ‘72 but considering the players that played in that series on both sides I imagine it was pretty epic hockey. I agree with all of the games you posted but let’s not forget some of those Wings Avs playoff games from the late 90’s early 00’s plus there have been some pretty epic WJHC games in the last few years where the level of hockey and the physicality have been off the charts.

Salt Lake City doesn’t even come close to this. A 3-2 win in OT! Sid the Kid with the winner. We win on home soil after losing to them a week ago. Luongo in net. Beantown really said it best.
That doesn’t mean it was the best game. For all of those reasons it was incredible and one hell of a good game. But I have seen better games in my life.

In no particular order
Game 7 1994 first round vs Calgary. Third striaght OT win to win the series. Incredible game. End to end. Physical. Great saves. That game had it all and maybe the best save in playoff history.
Last year’s WJC semifinal. Eberle scores with 4.5 left to tie it and we win it in OT 6-5. One of the best games you will ever see.
2002 Gold Medal Game
Any of the three games of the final of the 87 Canada Cup take your pic.
Today’s game was great better there were long stretches when not to much was happening.

Congrats to Canada
Great game with the worst possible outcome. No, not the score (both teams deserved to win) but that Crosby scored the OT goal.
Competitive violence, that's why you're here!
No sooner did I say ‘You can’t skate through 4 guys, Timbit!’, Crosby pots the golden goal. Egg on my face, great big smile on his. Way to go, kid.
Please allow me to adjust my pants, so that I may dance the good time dance, and lead the onlookers and innocent bystanders into a trance.
It still sucks that
Crosby was the one that scored and have his name live on forever. With the obvious exception of today’s goal, he really wasn’t an impact on the team. He also scored that shoot out goal but he doesn’t get the chance if Brodeur doesn’t match the Swiss goalie.
Competitive violence, that's why you're here!
What happened to Kane’s book on Luongo? Left it in the cab?

Very cool.

Now, on the Lord Stanley’s Cup! If they win that, I don’t care what it costs, my ass is going to be there for that party.
Go Captain Lou and the Boys!
Praise be to Luongod, from whom all good things flow.
Nice, are you in Texas? (Going by the “TX” in your name)
If the Canucks make it to the SC Finals I’m making a trip from Ontario to Vancouver for it, no matter what.

Yup. Born and raised.
Little strange that I’m cheering for Canada I’m sure, but as my family says, I’m a Canadian trapped in an American’s body. I’ve loved Canada since my first trip up there from when I moved to Washington State back in 2002. Looking at moving up there to get my Masters of Architecture once I get through with my undergrad work next year.

What a great day to be a Canadian, a Vancouverite, and a Canucks fan. Kesler and Luongo were two of the best players on the ice tonight.
This tournament was very fun to watch and what’s awesome is that the sky is the limit for Canada and the USA, today was a display of youth. While a lot of the Euro teams relied on old NHL stars (Jagr, Forsberg, Palffy, Selanne) the Canadian and US used speed and youth to get to the gold. Assuming that we have NHLers at the next Olympics you would have to think these two could meet again for Gold.
What a great Olympics for Canada and the city of Vancouver. We may not have owned the podium but we certainly owned the top of it.
Now i am off to Robson street to join in the mayhem!
Well, I would say they used speed and youth and a truckload of grit. The team that just brought speed and youth was the Ovechkin’d and Malkin’d Russians, and they didn’t do so well with that.
by Beantown Canuck on Feb 28, 2010 7:57 PM PST up reply actions
Luongo was not
one of the best players on the ice tonight. I don’t know how many times he didn’t catch a puck. With the caliber of the canuck’s defense, (compared to Team Canada) if he is this shaky in the playoffs they will be lucky to get out of the first round
Competitive violence, that's why you're here!
He kept most of the pucks out of the net. That’s what counts. He relied on his defense to help him out. The first goal was tipped and he still got a piece of it. Can’t fault him on that one. The second goal he probably should’ve caught/ covered up but after facing 31 shots letting in only 2 goals is pretty good. He played well enough for his team to win and that’s all you can really ask for from your goaltender.
Exactly…reading through various things on the Net…some just don’t get it.
Look, I am a Canuck fan, but I am a hockey fan. I have loved this game since the time I was old enough to remember.
Luongo was better than Miller tonight. Give me a break with trying to pick out foibles.
Who let in an O/T goal five hole. That was a stop Miller should have made.
Conversely, the first goal on Luongo was a tip, and he almost got it. The seconds was a pinball that fell fortunately for Parise.
Everything he saw…he stopped. He didn’t glove the puck in the last 30 seconds… (maybe he should have!)…because his defenseman was right there to clear it. It looked to me like he knocked it down for him.
Next thing you know…some negative nellies will be saying Broduer should have been in!!!
SHEESH!
"Of course you know, this means war!!"
Bugs Bunny
Meh, he should have caught that… but also two USA players shouldn’t have been at the doorstep with nary a Canadian d-man around. Parise is a little thing, had someone been there to push him, there’d likely have been no goal. Luongo stopped 34 of 36 shots in just under 70 minutes of play. Didn’t let in a bad goal. Perhaps his rebound control was off maybe 3 or 4 times… but none of those were the primary cause of a goal in my mind. And he won the damn game. Miller, meanwhile, should have stopped Crosby’s shot. Overall, an even game for the most part goaltending-wise, but if you have to pick a winner, then it should be the winner, so Lou’s the man.
by Beantown Canuck on Feb 28, 2010 9:11 PM PST up reply actions
Even if Luongo and Miller were pretty even today that is still better than what Brodeur did against Miller when the American was by far the better goalie. We got the gold so you can’t question Luuu!!!

Plus Getzlaf had his stick out on the shot that Louie couldn’t glove, I can’t tell if the puck hit it or not and also there is the possibility his stick messed up Louie’s view of the release. And yeah Parise was allowed to get right in on Luongo without any D picking him up.
It’s been brutal seeing how critical a lot of the media are on him. Like you guys said Miller lets in a softy in OT and all the wisemen still say he outplayed Luongo. Whatever, haters.
oh, cdz3210 is a blackhawks fan, no wonder he’s hatin’ on Bobby Lou. I hope we see your precious Kane and his little black book in the playoffs dude. We’ll give you a preliminary beating this Friday, too.
Yes I am a Hawks fan
but I just don’t think Luongo had one of his better games and not was one of the best players on the ice yesterday. For that matter I don’t think Crosby was either.
Competitive violence, that's why you're here!
Luongo was better than Miller and that’s all that matters. That’s why we have gold and the US doesn’t.

You agree that the Gold Medal winning goalie who made 35 saves wasn’t one of the best players on the ice in a 3-2 game where the guy who scored the OT winner, admittedly, wasn’t that good either? So who was good then?

From the replay I saw there was two americans bearing in on him fast so I hope he wasn’t trying to play it. I guess the only one that knows what truly happened is Lou
It went off a skate! He made the stop and nobody had Parise…who had a free shot on the rebound. Definitely not Lou’s fault
by Sean Zandberg on Feb 28, 2010 11:56 PM PST up reply actions
haha, we’re talking about when the american D-man slapped it in on lou and lou bobbled it with his glove, which kept the play alive in our zone and eventually evolved into the scoring play
You could argue the same for Miller before the OT goal.
He directed the puck to the corner when he could’ve froze it for a face-off and a fresh line change.
Poutine & Meatballs
yes, he could have…and like I said before….hey ref! get the fuck out of the way!

I’m glad Lou gets this on his resume, even if the media were pretty damn unfriendly the whole way through.
As long as the haters don’t try to put an asterisk on this then mission accomplished. Bad break for Brodeur, but hell Louie ain’t that young anymore and his mantle is a lot more bare than Brodeur’s.
He looks happy here!

Nahhh…Marty is a pro.
He was on the other side of that equation in 2002.
Seeing him come off the bench…he looked pretty happy.
Marty is a great goalie…just because he played bad in one game won’t change that.
The dissection of Luongo’s game is strange to me. That last goal…and whether he should have caught the puck is splitting hairs.
Just before Sid scored…Luongo made a great save on a turnover to even let Neidermayer pass it up to Sid!
What I have found startling is the egos of people like Kypreos and Sekeres…some of these other writers like Damien “douche” Cox, and Macgregor being unwilling to eat their words when they were slagging on Lui. Kypreos on the panel still taking his veiled shots so he could still look like the “expert” made it clear what a douche he is.
He acts like the “player” that knows more than the media types…but if you listened to him, you’d think he was a player on a par with the superstars of the game…instead of the plugger he was. And is..obviously!
Like Luongo said…“I’ll leave that up to you guys…I have a gold medal around my neck, and no one can take that away”
You know Ryan Rashaug had someone in his ear telling him to ask about the “critics”…but it was a douchey question to begin with!!

I get what you are saying Sean. He is a competitor…and a proud man…obviously.
But to say he was being a “me first” guy, at the time of an ultimate team triumph…I can’t agree with that. Regardless of what you think you “saw in his eyes”.
The big ol’ circle of life, my friend…he got his chance in 2002 in the same circumstances

I don’t know if he was being a “me-first” kind of guy. I’m just saying he looked bitter, which would be a natural feeling at that time.
by Sean Zandberg on Mar 1, 2010 9:11 AM PST up reply actions
He shouldn’t feel bitter. After all his accomplishments, and a brilliant career behind him, I am sure he has more wisdom than feeling bitter or gealous.
This gold must be a bittersweet one, for sure, but he also knows (like we all do) that there is a time when you must make room for the younger generation, who are hungrier and sharper, and this was the time for him to do that.
