Open Olympic Thread Day 15 - 3 Straight Olympic Gold Medals.....
Yes, Canada has done it again: our ladies have taken the gold medal in hockey. With two goals by Marie-Phillip Poulin and a shutout from Shannon Szabados, they beat the USA to earn Canada's 3rd straight gold medal in the event. The Americans were rather disappointed to be finishing with silver, while Finland was ecstatic to beat Sweden for the bronze. Meanwhile, in other sports, Joannie Rochette put in an emotional performance which earned her bronze for ladies' figure skating, Canada's first medal in the event since 1988. Also, both our curling teams advanced to their gold medal matches, and Kyle Nissen narrowly missed the podium by finishing 5th in men's aerials.
Today is a rather busy day. Hockey semifinals take place on the men's side, with Canada taking on Slovakia and USA taking on Finland. Meanwhile, the final medal matches occur for women's curling: Canada takes on Sweden for the gold while China faces Switzerland for the bronze. There is also lots of snowboarding, lots of speed skating, some bobsleigh, some slalom and a biathlon relay. Schedule after the jump, check out ctvolympics.ca and vancouver2010.com as always for plenty of Canadian coverage.

Canadian Athletes to Watch For:
-All hail Roberto Luongo! He and the Canadian men's hockey team will face Pavol Demitra and Team Slovakia in the semifinals this evening. Ryan Kesler and Team USA face Sami Salo and Finland in the afternoon. The way this works, the Canucks roster will feature a 2010 Olympic medal of each colour :)
-For the Parallel Giant Slalom snowboarding, we have Kimiko Zakresi, Caroline Calvé, and Alexa Loo.
-Our biathlon man Jean-Phillipe Leguellec will be joined by fellow Canadians Robin Cregg, Brendan Green and Marc-André Bédard for the 4X7.5km relay.
-Denny Morrison, Lucas Makowsky and Mathieu Giroux will skate together in the men's speed skating team pursuit, hoping to redeem for lost medal chances earlier on in the games. On the women's side, Kristina Groves is joined by Christine Nesbitt and Brittany Schussler, and Cindy Klassen will be the alternate. Canada had silver medals in both events back in Turin.
-Charles Hamelin, Olivier Jean and François-Louis Tremblay are all medal possibilities for the men's 500m short track. Although a podium sweep would be nice, it is very unlikely, but Canada could still easily come out of this with 2 medals. These 3 will also join François Hamelin and Guillaume Bastille in the relay finals later on. Meanwhile, the women will attempt a similar feat with Kalyna Roberge, Tanya Vicent and Jessica Gregg in the ladies' 1000m.
-Canada will have 2 sleds in the bobsleigh. Canada1 will be driven by Lyndon Rush, Chris Le Bihan, David Bissett and Lascelles Brown. Canada2 will have Pierre Lueders, Justin Kripps, Jesse Lumsden and Neville Wright.
Here's your thread. Sean will have a hockey thread up later for the Canada game.

USA/Finland Drinking game
from Greg Brady of AM 640 in Toronto via twitter:
Take a long, long swig or shot when the following 5 things are referenced by ANY commentator…on either side of the 49th…
1. Did you know the USA DIDN’T win the gold that Friday night when they beat the Soviets in 1980?…nope…had to beat Finland on Sunday..
2. Did you know Teemu Selanne is the all-time scoring leader in the Olympics?? (glug..glug…glug…)
3. Ryan Miller had to make a couple alterations to his mask….courtesy the fine, non-corrupt folks at the IOC (glug…glug…glug)…
4. Take a good long Hayley Wickenheiser-esque puff of that stogie when there’s a camera shot of either Brian Burke or Jari Kurri….
5. US viewers only: when Emrick/McGuire/Olczyk/JR reference their xenophobic caveman colleague who traded Jokinen/Luongo for Kvasha/Parrish.
AWESOME…

The third is choking as well. Wow. They played excellent all week and decide to dump the bed in the finals…
Are you surprised? There have been numerous choke jobs by Canadians in these Olympics.

Yeah but these are the women. The men have been the big chokers so far. Plus they’ve played so well all week and now the third can’t make a shot at all despite having good numbers all week.
Sweden’s last shot before the break almost toasted themselves. So close.

Yeah, who’s chokin now? That Annette just had a rough final 2 shots. And the tables have turned!

Well Bernard seems to be a second half team for whatever reason. Looks like she’s showing that side here now.
No doubt. She took full advantage of that flaw

They have a chance but they have to have 2 good shots here. If one of those are out of the rings, they’re done.
I need to go to curling school to fully understand

I need to learn why Sweden had the last rock in the past 2 ends. It’s because they cleared the house on their final shots? Educate me ;)
i wouldn't call it a choke
its a tough shot to make.

That double in the 11th was easy. That’s a nose hit and the other two stones go away. I mean even if you roll out it’s a blank and you get the hammer in the 12th….choke.

maybe, not sure. might be a better idea. besides, there’s only 3 events on sunday, so i’m actually not sure if there’ll be a thread. all there is for that day is a 50km cross-country skiing event, the gold medal hockey game, and the closing ceremony.
