Tuesday Morning Coffee- Old School Metal Edition
With the insanity currently going on in Calgary, and the big game for the Canucks against the Habs this afternoon, I felt like mixing things up a bit. So in "honour" of the Grammys the other night, a little old school metal accompaniment to your Morning Coffee.
Our focus here at NM is obviously on Montreal where the Canucks will take on the Canadiens at 4:30. With the news that Sami Salo is likely to return to the lineup tonight, along with Ryan Johnson drawing back in, the focus goes to two players tonight: Roberto Luongo and Alexandre Burrows. Luongo was pulled after 1 period in Toronto, surrendering 3 goals in that forgettable first frame. His stats in games after being pulled the night before this season are pretty impressive: 3-0, with a 1.33 goals-against average and .943 save rate (H/T to vancitydan). And unlike last season's visit to the Bell Center, I think we are more likely, given the number of injuries the Habs have and their inability to score 5 on 5, to see a game like Montreal's recent appearance in Vancouver, a 7-1 whitewashing.Old School Metal goodie: SCORPIONS-Coming Home
The other spotlight will be on the guy who scored more goals in January than anyone else; Mr. Everything, Alex Burrows. Playing in front of friends and family, and with no Stefane Auger to kick him out of the game for a BS call, you know he will be even more pumped than he was on Saturday night as he led the comeback against the Leafs. Burrows remains one of the hottest goal scorers in the NHL, and you can feel another big night coming.
Old School Metal Goodie: MEGADETH-Killing Is My Business... And Business Is Good
The possibility of Sami Salo returning to the lineup is welcome news. Though you can't say enough about how these guys stepped up in the absence of Salo and Willie Mitchell, the Canucks are a much tougher opponent with Salo's cannon from the blue line and Mitchell's shut-down abilities. It will also be nice to see Ryan Johnson back in the lineup, with the Habs getting the bulk of their goals on the PP, his shot blocking abilities will be required tonight.
Old School Metal Goodie: SUICIDAL TENDENCIES- Suicidal Maniac
A Fistful of Metal For Breakfast...
I don't know about you, but watching that Flames loss against the Flyers last night made me uncomfortable to watch. I actually felt for Jokinen and Prust a bit. What a brutal situation to be placed in, knowing you've been traded but still being required to suit up and be a good little soldier one last time. It's a mind boggling situation the Flames find themselves in right now, loaded down with a glut of wingers, most of them not very good. They have to be trying to flip Ales Kotalik, they couldn't possibly be interested in this prototypical Rangers underachiever and his contract that has 2 more years remaining. Then again, when you think about this trade, essentially the Flames traded Matthew Lombardi and a couple picks along with another player for Kotalilk and Chris Higgins, another underachiever. The dysfunction continues to grow in Calgary, and if D. Sutter doesn't make some incredible changes and go on a long playoff run, he's done, because he's already left this team with a shockingly bleak future.
Old School Metal Goodie: ANTHRAX- Madhouse
That gust of wind you heard last night from Central Alberta was not Dan Tencer bitching and moaning again, but the collective sigh of relief from the Oilers faithful. I suppose you could look at this as an upset, but let's face it, the Oilers had to win sometime. It would have been a better story for them to have beaten Calgary, and it might have been a little easier to handle the loss of Sheldon Souray in that game with a fractured wrist. The season may be done for the Oilers, and has been for a while. But at least now they have something to build on, right?
Old School Metal Goodie: OVERKILL- Elimination
Those of us anticipating the 2010 Men's Hockey tournament in Vancouver had to be smiling last night as Sidney Crosby lit up Buffalo's Ryan Miller for 3 goals, leading the Penguins to a 5-4 win over the Sabres last night. With Sid the Kid rolling, and guys like Mike Richards and Jarome Iginla (apart from last night) seemingly getting rolling, it's a good sign for Canada as they seek to capture gold on home ice at Canada Hockey Place.
Old School Metal Goodie: ANACRUSIS- Sound The Alarm
In AHL news, the Flames affiliate Abbotsford Heat are hosting the Chicago Wolves Thursday and Friday. The Wolves will have hockey's answer to the ">2000 Year Old Man in the lineup, Chris Chelios. I'd go just for the novelty of going to a game where I heckle both teams...
Old School Metal Goodie: OVERKILL- I Hate
Nucks Misconduct has complete game coverage for you today as always as the Canucks continue this historic road trip. One last classic (for me at least) before signing off... IRON MAIDEN's classic life on the road tune...

“It’s time for your medication Mr. Brown”
BOOHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA.
Love Anthrax, and really like the Spreading the Disease album. My fave tune on that one was A.I.R.
Never heard Anacrusis before. They sound good.
Geez waking up to hockey and metal….perfect! Thanks canuckle!
I wonder how long it will take for the new Flames players to click. I still like the moves Sutter made. Kotalik is an iffy potential bench-rider…or not. With no Phaneuf or Jokinen I won’t mind watching the Flames again.
that song was the intro music for my tv show in Kamloops back in the day… been a huge Anthrax fan for years, still have a Scott Ian guitar pick from their show in 87 opening for Kiss…
Anacrusis is a long-defunct band that never really got the recognition they deserved… they’re playing a couple reunion shows this summer in Europe and the hopes are they will reform.

Sorry for the Flames?
Really? Seriously?
IMPOSSIBLE.
What the heck happened to make them sympathetic? Will they feel sorry for us when/if our GM screws up?
I have no sympathy for the Flames. They made their bed, which they constantly reminded us is better than our bed, now they can sleep in it.
No sympathy, ever.
Knights, Canucks, Dolphins, Jays and Raptors all the way.
I tell you what though…they’re a lot harder to hate without Phaneuf’s elbows around.

I agree, Yankee. That’s why my inner Leaf love just took a hit. F**K!
Flames will be fine. Why is everybody getting their panties in a twist over the trades and then the 3-0 loss? Distraction city, but not for long.

we still have 4 games left against them. i have 0 sympathy and hope they get as bruised as possible so it will be 8 points for us.
Come on, we are talking about a game, for crying out loud! Hate has no place here, it’s all about having a good time. Flames, Canucks, Maple Leafs….it’s all the same. The business of entertainment…

I try not to wish ill will to other.
But you gotta admit, the entire division is at an advantage there is not ulterior motive to these deals.

Others...others
I agree with Temujin, an post edit feature would be nice.

At an advantage IF...
Man, this’ll never stop.

You need to hit the PREVIEW button, read what you wrote, then hit the POST button. Hellz, even a computer ’tard like me knows that. ;)
Please allow me to adjust my pants, so that I may dance the good time dance, and lead the onlookers and innocent bystanders into a trance.
Preview button? Psh.
That option is for pansies. Or smart people. And I am neither.

"hate" is relative
I, of course, mean “hate” in the hockey fan context. Not “hate” in the literal context.
At least, that’s how I’ve used it in this board.
Knights, Canucks, Dolphins, Jays and Raptors all the way.
It’s like hating beets, or country music, or Mark McGwire. No, wait, I really do hate beets.
Please allow me to adjust my pants, so that I may dance the good time dance, and lead the onlookers and innocent bystanders into a trance.
They’re having a legitimate, thoughtful discussion on Matchsticks right now about whether the Flamers should seriously consider trading Iginla. Can you imagine. Never would I have thought I would see the day that hardcore Flames fans would even consider such a concept.

Iginla would bring a huge package in return. Forgot Kovolchuk, every GM would prefer a leader with his skills. It’s worth discussing if your team is teetering on collapse.
You think Keenan is somewhere snickering to himself (as I imagine he does all the time)?

Bah I say! Trade Iginla? Tank it? For fuck’s sake! They are tied for 8th with Detroit!

They’re not out of it by a long shot, but the Kotalik trade makes no sense. Why move Olli when he’s a UFA at the end of the year to take back a softer player who has two years left on his deal? I agree with Kent over at M&G: there has to be another move on the horizon.

But that also doesn’t make sense! For that to be true, somebody must WANT Kotalik. Nobody wants Kotalik.

His value may be low, but I doubt that means he’s unmovable. Especially if he plays better under Sutter without Torts barking at him.

I think Keenan was coach when Sutter made the move for Jokinen. I’m pretty sure as former GM of the Panthers Keenan probably had a lot to do with the decision to go after Jokinen. So perhaps Keenan has a bit of blood on his hands a bit on this one.
Right, but he was also dismissed when he couldn’t make the team win a playoff round and now large contracts are being moved. There’s some reason to gloat in there if he wanted too.

WOW
Much more caring buggers than me on here.
Care a little about the Flamers? Feel sorry for the Sutters?
What?
Fuck em. Like Jevant said above…own bed…looks good. Well, on you guys it looks good.
They are making their own bed, and for this Canucks fan, I laugh myself to sleep at night just thinking about their pain and agony. I drink their tears with my morning coffee. Little salty, but they would do the same if the situations were reversed.
No Mercy. Sweep the fucking leg!
I doubt the “big” move…but even if they do one, it seems the season is already a discombobulated mindfuck for them already. Beantown is right? Who WANTS Kotalik? And why wouldn’t they just deal w/ Sather directly?
Couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch!
;-)

they were full of sympathy for us when we went through the auger crap.
kind of funny because after Conroy accused burrows of “tattling” the flamers got destroyed by auger the next night and proceeded to lose the next 8. their first win since was that game against edmonton.
and now the roster blowup. my lord i couldn’t be enjoying this more
Recall last year at the trading deadline when they landed Jokinen? It was proof their GM was a genius and Gillis was a timid loser.
Then they couldn’t ice a full team because Sutter had so badly mismanaged their cap, then the playoff implosion, then the overspending on defense in the summer. They have brought along zero top prospects, they have few draft picks and lots of $ tied up in a few expensive contacts for players of dubious value.
Failure look good on em!
I get a kick out of some of you calling it “blowing up” the team. When you blow something up there’s nothing left. That is not the case here. It’s called a makeover, people! haha

Yeah you need chemistry to blow shit up. This team clearly has none!

I for one
will never EVER feel anything for the Flames but the intense hatred I have always felt…
to see that team’s very foundations crumbling brings a smile to my face, they’re just as easy to hate in my eyes even with phaneuf gone, just one douchebag in a cast of many.
I have no idea wtf Sutter is trying to do… if this blows up and he cant flip Kotalik it will go down as one of the dumbest moves ever… if he trades him to Atlanta for Kovy, Don Waddell will get that prize…

No Mercy. Sweep the fucking leg!
You guys are funny!
Here in L.A. everybody thinks that Canadians are super nice to each other and everybody else. I guess I better keep this forum out of their sight.
Los Angeles, CA
Haha, with Chris Pronger in Anaheim for a pretty long time I’m surprised they would think that about Canadians. Then again, I guess a pretty small percentage watches hockey =P.
Give us a hockey stick, or put us in rush hour traffic, we turn into savages.
Please allow me to adjust my pants, so that I may dance the good time dance, and lead the onlookers and innocent bystanders into a trance.
You know, this IS why Canadians are so nice.
Hockey is the way to channel your inner monster. You can unload all your anger inside the rink. That’s it.
Los Angeles, CA
Yes.
That is the Secret Attila.
And now you went and told everybody. We still say “sorry” too fucking much tho’!
Ahhh well. If Dan Brown can do it about the Masons and still live, I guess us nice ol’ Canucks can do no less.
It is so true though. You finish up on the ice, (or even on the floor for me occasionally ) and you are just too tired.
That, and no gun to reach for * raises eyebrow, smiles and kicks soapbox back under the couch*…
Though, if I remember correctly through all the undiagnosed concussions, it was pretty easy to see or, willing or otherwise, participate in a fight in Rural B.C.
So, maybe not as lily white as our Rep.
Sorry ;-)

It’s already been said but which team is out there right now that’s saying “Hmm, what we really need is a guy who hasn’t been scoring. Kotalik is perfect! Oh and throw in Higgins and we’ll have ourselves a deal. Here’s Kovalchuk.”
It freed up a measly 500,000 in cap space for the Flames. Is that really the magic number to land another big name player out there?
And if they keep making deals like this they’ll keep icing new teams for every game which kills any kind of chemistry you can try to get going. They’ll be losing games in the short term trying to ice a decent team and by the time they get their final roster they’re going to run out of time to get chemistry going and win games to get into the playoffs. I wouldn’t be shocked if they miss the playoffs now.
