by what i’m seeing here, the top 2 skaters from these 7-person semis right now advance, so that would normally make for 6 skaters in the final.
my guess is that they’ll just add him as a 7th skater in the final.

mike milbury commenting on freestyle skiing=hilarious waste of everybody’s time. similar to when he comments on hockey, actually.
My little recap of the day...
-Kramer killed the 5000m speed skating
-That Korean wipeout in the short track was pretty epic, resulting in 2 Americans getting cheap medals
-I felt bad for Heil, she was clearly unhappy with Silver
-Close game for the women’s hockey team :)
-One guy wiped out in the luge but hung on to his sled and somehow got back on it before the end of the track
I’ve been wanting to try speed skating for a while now, anyone have a clue of how to get into it?

Yeah, I think the long-trackers have bigger legs.
But I do have pretty big thighs for my frame, thanks to regular weightlifting (squats, lunges) and playing lots of hockey and soccer up to now. I have pretty close to the same build as Apolo Ohno, just add about 15 lbs. I can post a pic for a visual if you want (kidding, in case the sarcasm meter is wonky).
By the way, I meant getting into it just for recreation (if that’s possible) not for high level competition since I’d be starting at a pretty late age of 24.

www.speedskating.ca has some good resources. I just read that Olympic level skaters start getting into it around 12 years old and it takes about 10 years to fully develop. Really makes you appreciate the dedication a bit more.

But he’s a good example of why technique and form (and maybe strategy?) is also very important.
I found an amateur skate club nearby that accepts noobs of any age. Maybe I’ll look into it when I have some time after the Olympics.

Heil did look dissapointed, but I think she was just annoyed. Maybe the two with her almost draping her in the Stars and Stripes had something to do with it…
I mean…yeah…happy for winning, thats great. But the way they were pushing the Stars and Stripes in my face was a little over the top. ( the woman that won had a great run! Don’t get me wrong…I enjoyed the competition, I just thought the celebration was a little over the top. Mind you, I expect it will be the same when a Canadian wins! )
But maybe I am just bitter that Jennifer got beat!

Yeah I thought it was a bit over the top but you know we’ll be like that when we win gold. She was probably down because she didn’t win gold but I’m glad she didn’t go crazy like them. It’s almost like an F U to the other competitors when you wave your flags around like that. Having said that, both the Americans had great runs. A really good run from Bahrke. They definitely deserved the medals.
