Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

Bwahahahaha Flames + more random thoughts

  • LOL Flames. Making all the trades for offensive depth. Having Olli in the lineup with Olli knowing that he's not wanted here. Getting shut out through 2 periods again -- new people new approach same result.
  • How about those Oilers? 4-2 over the 'Canes after 2 periods. After their 5-17-5 start the 'Canes are actually more than a decent team -- 14-11-2 in the past 2+ months. I hope the Oilers snap their streak.
  • A knock on Martin Brodeur as an Olympic starter: Marty hasn't won a game in Vancouver in 10+ years. Last season the Devils beat us 5-3 here w/ Clemmenson in net, and Brodeur's last victory here was in March 1999. Since then he's lost 3 games in Vancouver by scores of 2-4, 2-4 and 0-5. Sure the Devils don't come over here and play much. But still an interesting statistical anomaly.
  • Onto the Canuck defense. Alex Edler was +4 against the Maple Leafs. But that still doesn't alter the fact that he's shaky in his own end. His +/- year to date was still a really poor -3 on a top 5-on-5 team in the league.

I usually have to hold my breath when Edler handles the puck in or own zone. Edler's play is in stark contrast to that of SOB -- more often than not SOB is able to make a strong move, shake the forechecker and stake the puck out of trouble himself, or make a good pass to someone more open. Maybe Edler should have his ice time cut. Just like Bieksa whose played improved noticeably prior to his injury.

Speaking of SOB I really hope coach AV gives him more offensive duties. His current 5 points in 45 games are a tad disappointing compared to the 21 points in 77 games (pretty good for a young improving D-man in his 2nd year in the league) in his last season in Tampa

It just goes to show that beating the Oilers didn’t really count. I think they’ll lose a few more before they get some kind of chemistry going with the new guys.

That was damn weird keeping two players in their line-up who everyone knew were leaving after the game. Awkward…!

As for Edler, I think he’s getting too much ice time with too much pressure right now. I’d love to see him back to 19-20 minutes a game instead of the 25 he’s been forced to play. Maybe in two seasons he’ll be handling it fine, but not just yet.

On the plus side, it doesn’t look like he’ll be breaking 40 points this year, meaning I’ve got some Unibroue coming my way come the playoffs.

Speaking of SOB… anyone notice that Krajicek was signed by the Flyers a couple days ago (he was still a free agent!). Played his first game against the Flames tonight!

On a related note, any notice how Diane Phanoof got a standing O and second star in Toronto with no assists, no goals, one shot? Man they are desperate for a reason to cheer there.

Toronto Maple Leafs are a bunch of baddies.

You should take a look at a real team perhaps the Ottawa Senators or The Canucks :P

Also, it is interesting that the Leafs have traded all their offense for more defense. All the more fun it will be dominating you today as we did the Canucks during the week.
