Talk about your games that don't quite live up to the hype, huh? That's not entirely true, as the Canucks were as advertised, all speed, skill and tenacity. There was a lot being said about the Flyers suffering from their week off, which is funny because leading up to the game a lot was being made about how well rested they were with all their time to prepare and all that. I can understand a sluggish first period, but even when they tried to get things going, the Canucks simply didn't let them into the game. And despite a lack of Daniel Carcillo and Chris Pronger in the lineup, they still found a way to bring the douchebaggery up a notch with Jody Shelley's gutless sucker punch on Andrew Alberts. More after the jump...
The Sedins had a typical Sedin night combining for 5 points, one of the goals a beauty set up by a heads up play from Alexandre Burrows. He tore in to the Flyers zone after getting a pass from Henrik then hit the brakes, as the Flyer defenders went by, sending a pass to a wide open Daniel for an easy empty netter. Ryan Kesler continues to turn heads as he went a crossbar away from notching his second career hat trick, the third period clank off the iron was scooped up and deposited by Jeff Tambellini, who continued his strong play. Roberto Luongo was exactly as I thought he would be last night, focused and prepared for this game, a couple of the 35 saves were downright larcenous.
And now we're left with what to do about that sack of shit goon Jody Shelley. On the one hand, he's just coming off a suspension, and it would seem like a no-brainer for the NHL to come down with a fine and suspension. Yet when you consider the league's slap on the wrist doled out to Boston's Milan Lucic for a similar incident just the other day, you just have to wonder if they're gonna brush it off. The one thing that actually might help them make the right call here is that Alberts was forced to leave the game and did not return.
Cold pizza aka Food Of The Gods
The countdown to the Winter Classic continues, and the two burning questions are: Will the weather hold out, and what the hell is the NHL doing advertising Sidney Crosby's streak as something to watch for in the game? He still has one game to play tonight, and while it's against the Islanders, this reeks of bad karma... Team Canada's Matt Kassian will sit out a total of two games for his hit yesterday in the game against the Czech Republic... they are taking on Norway later today, which is going to be in all likelihood a bloodbath before the showdown against the Swedes on Friday... expect suspensions for a couple of Slovakian players after 2 dirty headshots against the Americans yesterday. Martin Marincin levelled Chris Zucker with an elbow to the face, and Peter Hrasko was also tossed for a headshot in the game... Patrick Kane returned to the Chicago lineup last night, the Blackhawks celebrated by losing both the game and captain Jonathan Toews... Nashville claimed Marok Svatos from St. Louis today as they tried to bring the recently signed Svatos in after playing over in the KHL. You can bet there's a little bit of frustration in St. Louis as the injury-riddled Blues look for help to stay in the playoff hunt... Montreal continues their freefall, getting shutout by Washington last night. I wouldn't be surprised to see more changes besides James Wysniewski from the Islanders for a couple draft picks, should this continue...
WAACH 'Cast's Band Of The Day- WOLF
From Örebro, Sweden come this 4 piece traditional metal band, very much influenced by Mercyful Fate/King Diamond as you can hear by this track 'Evil Star'. They've done a number of great covers over the years, including a wicked version of Blue Oyster Cult's 'Don't Fear The Reaper'.
