Your Morning Coffee- Tuesday December 28

Hands up if you didn't have this game circled on your calendar?  Oh really?  Why must you turn this into a house of lies?  There's something kind of special about playing the Flyers, whether it's been those rare victories against them of late, to the ridiculous blowouts, or the seemingly irrational hate they apparently have for us, there's a rich history between these teams (which Sean did a great job of documenting in the pregame writeup).  What is it that seems to get us fired up for these matches?  We love to watch the boys take on a team of scumbags.  And they don't come much scummier than an organization that wears the term 'bullies' like a blue ribbon.  The Flyers aren't one of those teams that people don't mind.  You either love them (and other things like harming small animals, bum fights and *shudders* gangsta rap) or you hate them with every ounce of your being.  So yeah, it's been circled in bright red ink... more after the jump, eh?

Just how much do some hate the Flyers?  Enough to write a song about them.  And while it's true that there are others that have more reason to hate them than us, you've seen it doesn't take much to join the masses of those who despise this team.  The key for the Canucks tonight will not just lie in trying to keep guys like Mike Richards, Claude Giroux and Danny Briere, but not get sucked into penalties by guys like the guy with hands down the best sex offender mustache in the NHL (sorry Sidney) Daniel Carcillo, and resident meathead Jody Shelley.  It's a mixed blessing that Chris Pronger is out of the lineup.  Obviously your chance of beating the Flyers does improve with him sidelined, but the fans are denied the chance to scream at one of the most hated players in the NHL.

In all seriousness, this should be a hell of a game against two evenly matched teams.  Some think that Roberto Luongo will be unfocused given the situation with his wife, but I too think that with the backup situation so much more solid this year, he doesn't feel like he has to do everything, and will be on his A game tonight.  Another key is taking advantage of one of the few weaknesses the Flyers have: faceoffs.  The number one faceoff team in the league should roll in this department, and as we have seen all season, winning important draws and getting possession of the puck often leads to good things.  I heard some Philly blog wrote an article mentioning something that a responsible journalist, let alone a hack like me shouldn't write concerning these two teams, but I refused to click on such blasphemy.

Ham and Eggs with a side of Hash Browns...

In a season that seems to have already had more refereeing controversies than last season, the latest out of Columbus looks really bad.  The problem is, we here in Vancouver know all too well that Officer Barbrady Terry Gregson and Colin Campbell will be along to tell us there's nothing to see here... And as long as you're over at Puck Daddy, make sure you check out the Most Shocking on Ice Incidents of 2010.  There's some stuff there that you might have forgotten about, including a couple that will make your stomach churn... That being said, I do rather enjoy seeing Evander Kane grab Matt Cooke and knock him the fuck out... Chris Osgood earned his 400th career win (only the 10th goalie in history to reach that mark) as the Avalanche let the Wings go 4-6 on the powerplay in a 4-3 ot loss at home... The Flames won a game against Buffalo who were missing leading scorer Derek Roy and Dman Tyler Myers (flu).  That explains the proliferation of 'FLAmez RuuulLLLeeEee!!!11!111!!!!!' posts across various interweb locations this morning... After an incredible run of 3 wins where the Islanders looked downright awesome, they were brought back to earth last night by their hated rivals as the Rangers embarrassed them 7-2... The Kings shutout the Sharks in the tank last night, ending San Jose's 4 game home winning streak...  Team Canada is back in action today at the World Juniors as they take on the Czech Republic, and over at the Spengler Cup in Davos, Switzerland Team Canada opened the tournament with a win, getting 6 goals on Moscow Spartak goalie Dominik Hasek in a 6-1 romp.  Yes, that Dominik Hasek... Other games worth watching tonight: Dallas takes on Nashville, Chicago is in St. Louis and Washington hosts the suddenly reeling Montreal Canadiens...

WAACH 'Cast's Band Of The Day

A nice doubleshot from NYC's thrash legends Overkill.  I've been a fan of these guys for years (they were the first band I ever interviewed, back in 1989 in Vancouver) and these two songs (one a cover of Vancouver's D.O.A.) are dedicated to the Flyers and their fans with love...
