Alberts gives Pavel Datsyuk a 1st class ticket back to Siberia. "I don't think he saw me coming", Andrew Alberts said post game. No kidding. More on Alberts and his confidence in the Canucks' system and more at The Province.

Pavel should have. He was coming towards him when the puck is turned over at first…
Where’d he think that big bugger went?

Being in the UK I don't see many games
And all I see of Alberts is highlights, stats and the occasional mention in the press.
But…what a difference a summer can make!
2pts, +4, 42 hits (miles clear of the other D men), 2nd on the D in blocked shots…he appears to have transformed into the steady, physical D-man we were told he would be.
If he can continue like this, he will be worth his weight in gold come playoff time.
mey mate, i live in Oz now and i’m just thankful of getting nba action over here. nhl doesn’t exist at all. nhltorrents.co.uk is the answer to your problems. i think right now they’ve reached a large number of subscribers so it’s invite only (unfortunately i don’t have enough points/rep/exp. etc. to invite anyone yet) but you can contact them to tell you you’re interested and at regular junctions they email ppl from that pool to invite them to be a member. you get quality hd broadcasts of every game usually within a few hours of the game. great great website.

Dear Slough Jets, thanks for beating the Guildford Flames.
Go to www.espn360.com, get the years pass and watch as much hockey as possible, all games streamed live and also available to watch for the next week, that’s what I do, but it does mean lots of getting up at 3am for live home games.

I admit my fail...
when I (and many others) started calling him AHLberts last year. In all honesty I hoped that he would get better when he learned the systems here but I never expected this much improvement. Moneyball Mike does it again.

on that note:
anyone feel like tallying up the number of hits from Ballard/Torres/Alberts so far? To say team hitting has increased would be an understatement and the hits are coming at key times.
"Last season we couldn't win at home and we were losing on the road. My failure was that I couldn't think of any place else to play." - Harry Neale
Team Hits:
Alberts 42
Hansen 33
Elder 26
Torres 26
Glass 23
Desbiens 22
Kesler 18
Bieksa 17
Son of Sam 17
Rome 15
…
Ballard 10 (8 GP)
Alberts rocking up with an average of just over 3 hits per game, and Torres and Hansen running riot on either side of MMM.
I love how balanced. D/f…D/F…and looks like Ballard is making up for lost time. How about Glass huh? Another Ivy League tough guy in the making.
I like the one that …I think it was yoata said, Double A.
Maybe he could get a Duracell or Everyready commercial.
“AnDrREw Alberts BRINGS THE POWAH…”
Or just NHLBerts. AHLberts should be retired. Or A-train….hmmm. AA and MM…couple 3 SSes.
All those capitals. Sure make it easier on our resident phone users…Thumb typers need shorthand…

Still…nahhh…Duracell would not go for it.
Maybe Eveready…LOL.

He WAS AHLberts last year, you were right. I don’t understand the apologies with regards to him. Any player that improves as dramatically as he has deserves praise, but they no less deserved the criticism they received before.

Sure. Reading his story though, it really sounds like he is just the big quiet Hammer.
Last year, lonely and a little confused, not understanding the system and the different West Conf. hockey.
This year, trained with new teammate and fellow D Ballard in Minny. Worked on what they said in the exit interview. Came back, was told he had a clean slate, and said"…fine…I got it now".
He sure looks noticeably quicker to me. Its so obvious he understands where to go and when. ( Seeing him jump up is a little fear inducing, but so far most of the time he has gotten back…it is what they ask all the D to do…)
The part that I found telling was that he has mentioned in a couple of interviews how much better it was to have a couple guys he knows well ( in addition to teammates he now knows better too ) in Ballard and Ginger Jesus.
I know GMMG heard all about it, but damn…sure looks like he is the guy that we were told he would be ( big, hits…defensive defenseman ). You know?

I’m still wondering why ballard is on our 3rd pairing. Is that operation from last year still nagging him or being eased into his role on the team? I thought he was a big minute guy…

AV plays guys minutes if they earn it. Guys like Alberts and Rome have been stellar. Maybe it’s a bit of what you said, being “eased back in”

Yeah, I suppose that sounds reasonable. I mean we were complaining about having bieksa as a 3.75 million dollar 3rd pairing d man, and ballard is just that at 4.2

Thing is
he’s been back for 4 games and his icetime has steadily decreased, he’s also been a -1 in each of the last 3…
How do you tell when blue cheese has gone bad?
Do you suppose it is the coming back from injury then? It is twice now, did it regress the rate he was coming back at?

I think
he’s basically another Bieksa, high risk player, probably having a hard time adjusting to AV’s style without the leniency Bieksa has always gotten for whatever reason.
How do you tell when blue cheese has gone bad?
I agree with that, except I think ballard is more responsible defensively than bieksa is and has less of an offensive upside, basically a more reliable version of bieksa. Once he gets the playing style down pat (like alberts) we’ll see an improvement

Iain McIntyre today:
In Saturday’s win against Detroit, Ballard logged only 12:06, a distant sixth behind Rome (19:15) and Alberts (17:07). Ballard came to Vancouver with five years and $21-million-US remaining on his contract, so how can you put a $4.2-million player in the press box? But how can you not when others are so clearly ahead of him at the moment? Unless Canuck coach Alain Vigneault makes a political decision, Ballard is the guy to come out. We’re not writing off the next five years; we’re just saying he doesn’t deserve to be among the top six on Tuesday.
I have to agree with this. More here.

keep in mind, however, that he also spent 5 minutes in the penalty box for fighting.

They can't actually be thinking about benching Alberts
As discussed he’s our most physical D-man on the other hand Rome plays more mins. Tough call, but good problems to have.
OH YEAH
