PrintDan Murphy tweets this morning that the Canucks have placed bubble guy Peter Schaefer on waivers, and is wondering who gets called up next from Manitoba. Schaefer has steadily fallen down the depth charts in Vancouver. Cue the "why didn't we keep Brendan Morrison" conversation.............NOW

I know we may not have been able to sign Morrison given contract $ and the 2 way deal issue but choosing Schaefer over one of our kids with lots of upside and needing time in the NHL is straight crap.
For me this is the final straw kinda effect, the team is in a rut and while they’ve recovered from terrible ruts and gone on a huge tear in the past. I say that’s the exception and not the rule.
Really good teams that vie for the cup do go through some losing streaks but the stats for 5 on 5 show the problem goes far deeper than just a small losing streak. Without the new PP coach to get the team off to a good start where would this team be?
Speaking of that, what do you think the PP coach thinks about AV throwing Joel Perrault out on the PP. The PP is one of the only things that look dangerous and he’s tossing the 4th line center out on it. (course if it was CoHo playing 4th line center I wouldn’t say a thing)

this is typical ‘jump first think about a parachute second’ reactionary thought. It gets tired, and is frankly embarrassing. You think signing morrison instead of schaeffer would have eliminated our problems?? U think coho as a 4th line grinder makes any sense to anyone not calling into team 1040? You think firing the coach and replacing him with…well who would u replace him with anyways? Last I checked Mike Babcock still has a job, not sure what other kind of proven talent is out there. You wanna throw an unknown rookie coach into a cup ready team 1/4 into the season and hope we can win it all? That’d be awesome…if it works. The chances of it failing miserably are much higher though…u wanna take that risk?
All the people calling for the coach’s head after 4 games… show me an alternative that makes sense before u go off half cocked. I’m not saying AV is the perfect coach, heck far from it, and frankly I say if he doesn’t make it passed the second round this year, its time to make a change there…but come on. Hit the panic button now…it’s exactly the reputation we have. Maybe you’ll be lucky and all your dreams will come true: the leafs will fire ron wilson and we can have him coach the canucks. Or, I know…a sutter! Yeah!

True there is no pretty solution as I don’t know the up and coming coaches available. I wouldn’t want to go with the old guard of coaches as none of them have had much success over the last few years.
But we are talking about a guy who chose to have 3 wingers for a 4th line until it proved useless. You have to have a center to try and win that icing face off. It’s not knee jerk from me as I’ve been unsatisfied with AV for sometime. I don’t think he’s a terrible coach, I just think he’s not of the calibre to win a Cup.
Look at a player such as Ballard, a guy like that has never been sat in his career so you use him to prove a point to everyone else and sit him. But not for 1 game but for 4 or was it 5? Sit that guy for 1 and damn sure he’s gonna try and play better. Sit him more and then you gotta think WTF, Bieksa got to play his way out of tragic play into somewhat better play…
I actually don’t want CoHo on the 4th line, it was merely an example of a center who might be playing on the 4th line that I would be happy with on the PP. I think Son of Sam should be on the third with Coho on the second – if he should even be brought up.
If Raymond is so hurt or just sucking why isn’t he in the press box? With Tambo on the farm this team has options that the coach just isn’t using. Course it could be the waiver issue but if that’s the case they should have been some better foresight.
Sending down a player like Tambo and not being able to recall him due to waivers is on par with trading him for nothing.
You think Tambellini wouldn’t make it through re-entry waivers? Judging by some of the talent that’s made it through on the way down, I don’t see why not.

no, but I think the team worries about losing him + picking up half his salary. He’s a shooter and he might look good on Malkin’s wing and at 50% off why say no?
We are so close to the cap that another team could grab him or a player like him and really make life uncomfortable and potentially damage our chance at a high playoff position.
His cap hit would be pro-rated from $250,000. I have no idea how that could damage the Canucks’ chances at a high playoff position.

How much room do we have? according to Cap Geek $0 room and $125K in LTIR so losing Tambo puts us over… which means we would have to play with a reduced roster ALA Devils or Calgary.

Honestly – no idea. I want Tambo up or any player willing to go to the front of the net and stay in the area. Too many times we have 3 guys behind the net at the same time.
It seems like instead of drifting back into the slot the lines seem to press along the boards to gain the puck = good
But once they have the puck they cant quickly move it to a player in that has either moved to the slot or is going to the front of the net because they’re all on the boards or protecting the blue line from the puck escaping the attacking zone. I would call this = Bad

A rare good article
in the province today (i know, I know…) that gives a bit of perspective. I’m really not all that concerned with the team right now. Work this stuff out now, get all the injuries and brain farts and bad runs done now, expect another 3 game slide in february and we’re ok as a team. Raymond should sit tho, I agree whole heartedly on that point…whether he’s injured or just having mojo issues, let him get his fire back from the press box.

4 games isn’t a big deal, neither is 6; 8 or 10 would be. It won’t get there or it shouldn’t. My issues is with 5 on 5 play and personnel used or selection over others.
5 on 5 has been troubling, mos def. As for players being used, any number of combinations would result in people getting their danders up. I don’t like so and so, why don’t they play you know who? Every fan has their favourites and their scapegoats.

if Vokail felt I was talking down to him, I would ask him to let me know so I can correct it or at least apologize. I was more talking down to a general murmur that tends to go on in vancouver, not him; I do hope he didn’t feel that I was talking down to him. His response indicates that he didn’t feel that way.

was worth a response Twitchy. yoata is the king of not practicing what he preaches. I simply ‘pointed out for reference’ the other day when he accused me of using circular reasoning when he was in fact doing that himself and it lead to a big fight. Probably best to let him have his delusions.

eh, I’m still surprised they didn’t make an offer to Morrison, but given the need for a 4th liner and the playing time Morrison gets in Calgary, I find it unlikely to believe he would’ve been a Canuck anyways.

wasn’t referring to Mo specifically, although i think it was clear he really wanted to be a Nuck and would be a nice option to have right now on L3 while MM is struggling.
More just referring to yet another pet project by Gillis, he just seems to love that type of player for whatever reason, always dumpster diving for discarded treasure.

I think “dumpster diving” just comes with having cap issues. Plus it’s not altogether a bad idea, having players who outperform their contracts – whether it’s because they’re a “discarded treasure” or because they’re on an ELC – seems to be closely connected to being competitive.

This year you gotta look at Torres.
In the past, Edler and Ehrhoff both have. A prime example is Alex Burrows.
The past few cup winners have all had players outplaying their contracts – Crosby, Zetterberg, Toews, Kane etc. etc.

still out on Torres though, as hot as he was, he’s probably been our worst forward the last 6-8 games.
Edler and Erhoff were never in any dumpster, and Burrows was Nonis’ pickup who started in the AHL and worked his way up.

how about just playing better 5-on-5 hockey?
how about stopping the cute plays? cute plays are awesome when the team is confident and rolling – now all it leads to is puck chasing and being out of position.
I am waiting with bated breath for another team to take advantage of the PP breakout where Henrik skates out of the zone and drops the puck at centre for the trailing D-man to pick up.
how about putting the puck on net when in prime scoring areas? anyone?
how about a couple of hits from the 3rd and 4th line?
how about not giving up the 1st 2nd and 3rd goals in the game?
