Tough One For Hamhuis

"I blocked a shot, it was bouncing in front of me, I had a guy on my back and just tried to clear it to the side," Dan Hamhuis said. "I don’t know what happened. It was a tough spot. Puck bouncing off my chest, and I really had no time. I just tried to clear it out of there but the puck ended up going to their guy." -Vancouver Sun

Amazing how quickly the puck can end up in the back of your net after a mistake. That overtime was intense. Both teams decided to take turns with odd man rushes and Tyler Myers capitalizes on Hammer's giveaway to give the Sabres a 4-3 OT win. Hammer's had it worse. Oh yes, in the 2004 Playoffs. I'm so mean. Seriously though, he's been great for us.

Star-divide

  • The Canucks still have not won in Buffalo since February 2003.
  • The Sabres outshot the Canucks 7-2 in overtime
  • Both teams fired 39 shots at the opposing goaltenders
  • The Canucks killed all 5 Sabres' power plays, and went 2 for 5 on the PP themselves. They are quickly moving up the charts in the PK category.
  • I want to curse Henrik Sedin for not shooting more and coughing the puck up repeatedly, but he had 3 assists. Geez, he could have had more points than that. Still, he needs to shoot more! Right? Did you know he had 5 shots tonight? Wouldn't have thought it. So did Manny Malhotra.
  • Over 27 minutes played by Alexander Edler and a PPG to boot. He has 2 goals and 13 points in 17 games this season. Wow!
  • According to Team 1040, Andrew Alberts only played 1 shift in the 3rd period. He finished with 11:09 ice time and a -3. That's the second bad game for Alberts on this road trip. It may be a safe bet that Keith Ballard will take Alberts' spot on Wednesday against the Penguins.
  • Cory Schneider...finally comes down to earth a bit with his performance, but he played quite well despite that. He wasn't getting much help in front of him tonight.
  • Thomas Vanek and Derek Roy each had 2 assists and were a combined +6.
  • In the Canucks' last 4 games, the only dude from line 3 who has a point is Jannik Hansen (1 assist). Talk about streaky. But that is about what we can expect from them.
  • I like the Canucks' ability to make all these comebacks, but they really need to tidy up and take control of games.
  • BOXSCORE and HIGHLIGHTS

To me it looked like Hammer was trying to hit Burrows with a pass, but his stick was checked just as he released it and it dribbled/deflected to Myers.

Burrows should have supported the play instead of streaking away.

What hammer should have done is pass to a wide open Rome on the half-boards.

by SteveNux on Nov 16, 2010 10:49 AM PST up reply actions

Exactly what I was thinking

And I think that’s what Burrows was thinking too, but he should know better than to take off before the pass is completed and we’re out of the danger zone. Still, with the pace of the OT, maybe he was just thinking “okay, our turn on the rush”.

by sunshine and lollipops on Nov 16, 2010 11:40 AM PST up reply actions

Yeah

With 30 seconds left it OT, he was trying to get in that one last scoring chance. He IS good on the breakaway and it was 4 on 4 so… he just got ahead of himself there.

Maybe if Hammer’s stick wasn’t checked on the follow-through, it would have been a perfect pass.

Watching the standings would be almost as much fun as watching a hockey game. It would be wild action, a team falling from first place to last place in a few weeks, and back again.

I think I would go for it, but I can see why the league will never allow that. The interest of the league is to give hope to EVERY team, they want the league as a whole, to prosper, not just a few teams. If the weaker teams fall off the bandwagon early, they would lose a huge segment of the market share, since people in Atlanta, Florida, etc would stop going to hockey games.

But this is the reason the league has this backasswards system in place. They are so focused on trying to pull in new fans, the “casual fan”, that they don’t realize the system sucks. Or they do but don’t care (which is probably worse)

Hey, that’s a 20% drop. It’s huge!

So, may be this false parity is good for hockey in the long term, because in a few generations hockey becomes part of everyday life in places where it was just a novelty before.
It’s like establishing vegetation in a harsh climate, where there was none before, it takes extra effort and taking away resources from the richer areas.

Yeah, I know. The other day I was talking to a hockey mom, since our kids play hockey. She said that playing hockey in Phoenix for a young kid costs about $800 a year, which is less than a third of what it costs here in Los Angeles. That’s because there is so little demand for ice time down there.

To me hockey

is the kind of sport that you really have to see live to understand how good it is. Especially the NHL. You don’t really understand how big and fast and strong the players are and how quickly the game is moving until you go to a game live. If they want to draw in fans in non-traditional markets the best solution long term would be to find a way to get as many kids in the door as possible. Don’t cater to the casual sports fan cater to the future hardcore sports fan who otherwise would have been an NFL or NBA fan but was won over by hockey when they were 8 or 9.

Yeah but if you get enough

hardcore fans to get a good season ticket base you can then go out and spend to make your team competitive and the fans will come. And then when you aren’t good the hardcores will still be there. Plus if there are a good base of hardcore fans they will help turn their friends who may be casual sports fans into hockey fans.

Except

with kids especially, I think that comes mostly from being able to play the sport you see your heros being gods at. That’s where the passion really connects I think, moreso than just being able to watch it, and that’s why it’s unlikely hockey will ever compete with the more traditional outdoor sports in the sunbelt like baseball, football and basketball that not only are so much more accessible to participate in, but also so totally entrenched in the culture of those areas.

This is true. And I don’t really see why the sport needs to expand down there. Why not focus on areas where hockey IS the culture – like Minnesota, New England, etc. and other states where it doesn’t compete directly with other sports that are more easily accessible for most of the year.

True, if you don’t play the sport as a kid, you can’t really make the starts part of your childhood heroes.
But I have to look at my 7 yr-old son as an example: he payed soccer for the last 3 years, and started skating only the last fall. And everybody around him plays soccer, including at his school-grounds. So, he was supposed to like soccer over hockey, right? Wrong.
He instantly fell in love with skating and hockey, and dumped soccer as fast as you can think of it. No matter how much competition from soccer, baseball, basketball, football…. he loves hockey like nothing else.
How did that happen? It’s because there is nothing like skating. It’s magic.

Playing a sport helps

to develop a kid into a fan of that sport. But it’s not necessary. I didn’t play soccer growing up. I fell in love with the sport without playing it. I played basketball, a little hockey and a lot of baseball. But fell in love with soccer. I fell in love with it because my dad loves it and because we went to games and watched games on TV and then I started playing it. Get kids to games, make hockey video games for kids and things of that nature and even if they don’t play the game I think they will fall in love with it. Of course the NHL and it’s teams should do everything in their power to increase the exposure of their fans to playing the sport as well. But I don’t think it is necessary to creating fans.

See

This is a bit of the problem though. In the sun belt, most of the adults don’t follow hockey, and don’t love hockey. They love baseball, basketball and football, and therefore their kids will probably love those sports too.

And those adults don’t have the chance to become exposed to hockey and possibly have a late love affair with it if they are never exposed to it from TV or radio.

this is why it’s not easy to grow a sport. Especially somewhere that is already entrenched with other sports. I think you have a better chance with kids than with adults though.

Yes

but the skating can also be a big deterrent as well, an intimidating skill to acquire let alone master, and it takes a lot of that accessibility to do so.

To me they have to start with rollerblading and rollerhockey and ball hockey clinics and leagues and work from there to have any hope in those areas and even then, it’s just so much easier for kids to toss around a football or throw a basketball into a hoop, even swinging a bat I think is far less intimidating.

What about

3 pts for regulation win
2 pts for OT/Shootout win
1 pts for OT/Shootout loss
0 pts for loss?

by jluglue on Nov 16, 2010 11:44 AM PST up reply actions

That would make teams more desperate in the 3rd instead of trying to hang on until overtime when “everyone wins”.

It depends.

Do they want the games to be competed at high levels through the most dramatic time, the end?

Or guys playing for the tie. If they are serious about not liking games decided by tiddlywinks shootouts, the best way to do that is not get there at all.

Best way to open the game would be, in a tied game, a team that needs to make a run from the bottom for the playoffs…to go for it.

You are prob’ right though.

But a for instance. They are a little different this year, but I have been watching the Hawks a bit. With their struggles, they have been playing defensive, get the point hockey in the 3rd this year.

Cup champs, brash and supposedly offensive as hell, and the Hawks have been playing for the point.

You would have to think even a team playing that way after a poor start would want to coop that "winner’s point " more often.

;-)

3-2-1. Just make it 3 for a reg win, and keep the rest.

No more games where teams try to “shut it down”…or…“play for the point”.

Good read

He lays out a vary level headed view on all of it.

I don’t buy his reasoning behind why suspensions are short though. Shouldn’t everyone be more worried about the safety of the players as opposed to the money lost because their suspended player can’t play? I’m sorry, but to me their priorities are not in the right place if that’s why suspensions are short.

while it’s certainly true that it could happen, i wouldn’t bet on it. Weber’s almost exactly two years older, so, by the time they turned 23:
Weber: .43 PPG in 161 games
Franson: .34 PPG in 61 games

Trotz is also protecting Franson more than he did Weber at the same age.

It’s happened before.

Truth

Twitch left for a while (he’s back now, thank Zeus). This is becoming redonkolous.

What value does

someone bring if every time someone else has a differing opinion he attacks them? Good regulars like Twitchy and casual have left, luckily one came back, in part because of what he does on this board.

Is that why we don't see

casual anymore? I haven’t seen him in a long time.

I am reasonably sure

there was more to it than that. Unless casual refutes that. If he does I will gladly admit I was wrong and apologize.

Totally negates all the good that Sunderland game did. They’re not doing anything this year, unless Rooney returns with a fire lit under his ass.

Well now

we are undefeated. Get rid of Berba and we might be OK. Was reading today we have 157 million pounds in the bank mostly for players. Bale, Torres, that kid from Sunderland that just got called up to the England squad. Shopping list.

Draws suck.

maybe the EPL should have a shootout?

;-)

But yeah, missing that moment of brilliance that gives more wins than draws is getting old…

Rooney…whats up bud? ( need to get Berba gone…for his money if anything else. Great player, but yeah VG, the sights seem off.

I didn't know about casual

I know Van City Dan’s wife wouldn’t let him come for a while cuz he got too mad…

In the interest of fairness and my new zen outlook on NM, the reason I left had a lot to do with the fact that I didn’t like what I was doing on the board. How I got that riled up is what it is, but at the end of the day, I’m responsible for my own posts, as are section, yoata and that always cranky-cheapshot bitch chuckles (I can forgive the guys who like arcade fire cuz they’re obviously below average intellect level, and beantown cuz he’s a lawyer so has no soul anyways) but the rest of us have to be responsible and held accountable to our own actions. All of us. No exclusions.

As far as yoata, section and me, all three of us are strong willed opinionated people, and there’s bound to be a certain level of disagreeing on things. I have a weakness for losing it when I feel people are being unjustly aggressive or rude to others, and I am trying to get past that. Frankly any issues i’ve had with anybody here never even came from a disagreement between me and them; that just exacerbated the friction.

I’m sure if we all found ourselves in a pub somewhere watching crosby’s golden goal we’d all buy each other beers. Then an extra for chuckles for posting the gif when needed and when not.

And I have developed that same zen outlook my friend.

I can only control me, right?
