2. you both square off
3. you fight
it’s not
1. you throw off your gloves and lunge while they’re half-facing you
2. he tries to get his gloves off in time to fight
3. before he’s completely ready and has time to square off you clock him the kisser

If Smid wants to stick his nose in there then he had better get ready to start throwing them. Smid instead hesitated and cowered for a second before dropping his gloves. Pow, gets one right in the kisser. So, while I can kind of agree with your first 3 points as far as etiquette goes, if Smid doesn’t want any, then he should stay the fuck out of the way.
“You both square off”. That is not always the case. Many tilts start way quicker than that. Look at Stortini throwing them at Prust right after Avery gets tossed.

Was he trying to throw punches from off ice? I imagine there’s going to be some supplementary discipline here.
Also, I don’t think you can call the Avery-Smid thing a “cheap-shot”. I’m pretty sure they were both jawing at each other there, and Smid was looking at him the whole time. He had to know it was coming.

I think the two were different
Clune was trying to get Rypien to go and so he was ready to fight. He was just slow getting his gloves off. Avery turned down an invitation to fight and then as soon as Smid took his eye off Avery the gloves were coming off and a punch was being thrown. It’s two different situations for me.

Smid did give Avery a stick slap as well. And it doesn’t look like he ever did take his eye off him.
Avery did do it pretty quickly, but it wasn’t like Smid wasn’t looking. Maybe you can call it being a bit dirty, but I don’t think it qualifies as being labeled cheap-shot.

That’s a matter of semantics. I would simply call it a dirty, pussy, spineless, douchebag move. Zona is the one calling it a cheapshot, and he doesn’t have much credibility on much. In fact I think I from now on will forever refer to him as Sean Avery Zona in reference to my comment over there.

with Oilers players. Smid asked him to go and he said no we will go later. Then as soon as Smid started to back away he attacked him. That’s fucking gutless.
And I am not even going to respond to the argument that it’s Smid’s fault he got jumped because he wasn’t ready for it. He should have expected the worst? OK. How does that change the fact that Avery was cheap and gutless?

So if Smid says “we’ll go later on” then he should have skated away. But he didn’t. Shouldn’t there be a little onus on Smid’s part not to be stupid like that? I mean, like I said, that is Avery he’s dealing with. However, after watching it over again now he is kinda skating away..Avery looks back, at what I don’t know then goes after him. Yeah, ok, it’s douchey… I can see that. But if Smid isn’t going to answer the bell for his buddy then maybe he should stay the hell outta there and let somebody else deal with it.

he did answer the bell. And Avery was too much of a pussy to fight him. Then jumped him after he had already said he wasn’t going to fight. It’s typical but that doesn’t make it any less stupid.

Peckham’s move was douchier. The guy’s already off the ice and you’re going after him. This is the NHL not a WWE hardcore match.
He started going after
him when he was still on the ice I think he was just slow getting there. Avery was laughing at the Oilers bench and Peckham tried to get to him. The way I saw it Avery was the one practically running away until he was sure the linesman was in the way and his team mates were grabbing Peckham.
