Canucks Acquire Paetsch From Panthers
Update: Paetsch's NHL salary for this season is $525,000 according to CapGeek.
Update: fun fact from @mattlee61 - "Paetsch was traded from the #Sabres to the #BlueJackets at the March trade deadline... For Raffi Torres."
2 trends for the Canucks continue: trading with the Panthers and acquiring former Buffalo Sabres. Today the team has announced a trade that sends D Sean Zimmerman to Florida in exchange for D Nathan Paetsch. Yesterday the club acquired former Sabre Andrew Peters. Zimmerman failed to impress at Canucks camp. He was originally acquired in the Matthieu Schneider deal to the Coyotes.
Paetsch had a solid season with the Sabres in 2006-07, scoring 24 points in 63 games. His NHL time has decreased ever since. He did not play in the NHL last season, but instead played in the AHL. Plays like this don't help his cause:

Better keep it!
He’s been traded to the Panthers. 50/50 odds he’ll be back eventually, but he’ll have to stop by Buffalo first.
Who’s got the new Canucks calendar? Isn’t today the 21st anniversary of Krutov being the first Russian to score a Canuck goal?

Except
Love Drug and Juicy. Seriously how annoying is that commercial. Green? Does ANYONE call marijuana green? Don’t we all just call it pot? That commercial rattles me.

So this is another player that does not need to go through reentry waivers to get called up. Smart move. Having those types of players in the system able to be called up means you don’t have to play with fire cap-wise to bring someone in for a few games. For a team that is anticipated to be at the cap all season, these types of assets can be valuable. This has Gilman written all over it and I think this is a very rational depth move to make. I approve.
But these guys should only need to come up in an injury situation
and then re-entry waivers don’t apply anyway right? I thought the two yesterday had more to do with saving the owners money considering what the guys we moved would have made if they played a whole year in the AHL but getting their NHL salary. This move today is the first one I don’t really get. Both guys are AHL D men for the most part. I guess the only thing about Paetsch is that he does have some NHL experience.

Yep and I’ll take that over Zimmerman’s zero NHL games experience.

I’m with Sean on why this trade was made. He has some experience and can fill in as the 5th to 7th D if absolutely necessary. I suspect the model here is Rome who was forced into top four minutes in the playoffs last year and played well enough to merit another contract. Not a big contract mind you but one to remind management about the value of the bottom of the roster.
These moves are basically pointless. The last 3 trades have been for guys that aren’t going to crack our roster. Gillis is just moving contracts. Is Paetsch cheaper than Zimmerman? That’s the only way this deal is somewhat ok.
How can it be pointless
if ti’s moving contracts? That is the point. Moving contracts.

Minor deal? Yes, We not caring much? Yes.
But not every deal is a blockbuster. This is largely used to provide some experience to our call-ups. I’d rather have an experienced call-up, than a first-timer rookie. Even if their skills are similar. The contract is also similar because I can’t see Zimmerman making any more than the minimum anyways.
It’s just another move to bring some experience, just in case people go down with injuries…. and Hopefully we will never see him in our line-ups.

You know
A Moose team that goes on a nice long playoff run could be good for the development of all the young guys down there.
"Playin hurt, baby that don't faze me. I don't got time for pain. The only pain I've got time for is the pain I put on fools who don't know what time it is!"
Not to mention that a guy that’s played in the NHL is probably going to be a calming influence on the kids there, and can tell them about some of his experiences. It helps out in a lot of different ways to have someone there who has been through what you are trying to achieve.
