Around SBN: Is Adebayor About To Become A Full-Time Spur?

Five Days To Go...

...and here's where we stand with the Canucks.

1. Cody Hodgson and Eddie Lack are still with the team for financial reasons (if you're a cap sleuth, then you know the devil is in the details). Both are probable to be heading to Manitoba sometime tomorrow along with perhaps Cory Schneider in another money-saving move.

2. As reported yesterday, Joel Perrault is on waivers and likely heading to Manitoba too. His one-way deal means the Moose pick up his salary.

3. Unless the brass does a 180 on Hodgson, that leaves the final roster spot up front up for grabs between Jeff Tambellini and Peter Schaefer. Again, a decision likely today or tomorrow. UPDATE: Tambellini hits the waivers. Odd considering his preseason play. No word yet on Schaefer.

4. On the back-end - and as discussed in the comments yesterday - AV has opted to open the season with Bieksa and Hamhuis as the top defensive pairing. So for now Saturday night's roster looks like:

Daniel Sedin - Henrik Sedin - Mikael Samuelsson

Mason Raymond - Ryan Kesler - Raffi Torres

Jannik Hansen - Manny MalhotraSchaefer

Tanner Glass - Alexandre Bolduc -Guillaume Desbiens

Kevin Bieksa - Dan Hamhuis

Christian Ehrhoff - Alexander Edler

Andrew Alberts - Keith Ballard

Roberto Luongo

Cory Schneider

5. Last, but not least, there's no update on Bob's groin but nothing to suggest he won't be ready to go.

120 hours...

Being sent down to Manitoba?? That doesn’t make sense.

I was thinking that

So he’s ineligible for waivers then? I don’t completely get that part of the CBA. Then start the year with Lack as backup I guess?

Correct me if I’m wrong but “Opening Day” in the CBA in which you have to declare your “active roster” is not the roster you have to play on the first game of the season. That way they can fit Burrows under the cap before putting him on LTIR. Can you start the season with only 1 goalie?

Opening day of the season is not the same day as the day of your first game (though for some teams it is). Opening day is Thursday, but the Canucks don’t play until Saturday. So they’ve got two whole days to move players around once they declare their ‘opening day’ roster.

Lack/Schneider

Playing around with Capgeek. Having Lack on the roster reduces our cap by approximately $400K. They’ll bring Schneider back up as soon as Salo/Burrows go on LTIR. That still leaves us 1.5M over….

I say friend, I have hardly seen her since she went to University, and seemed disinterested when I mentioned I was a Canucks fan. I don’t know how prepared she is, but I’m sure she’ll have an amazing time in an amazing city…

Like most British people, she has no real knowledge of hockey, but I’m guessing being around what could be a great year for the Canucks could make her someone I actually know who I can talk to about hockey!

Can’t wait for Saturday.

What are the pro’s and con’s to our new Frenchie grinders? I never got to see much of Bolduc in his 15 games in the bigs last year, so I have no idea what he brings to the table.
Is this an improvement over last year or just a Cap driven result?

by Mojo J on Oct 5, 2010 9:07 AM PDT reply actions

Is this an improvement over last year or just a Cap driven result?

I’d argue it’s both. Our 4th line last year was crap, partly because Johnson was injured/not playing at the level we needed, Hordichuk is terrible and Rypien wasn’t much better. The fact Bolduc and Desbiens outworked and earned their spots should say something. Bolduc has some health problems but we have plenty of guys on the Moose who can sub in if that happens.

And it’s definitely a cap result. We spent way too much on defense, plenty on the netminder and a good chunk of change in the top six and Malhotra. Torres is a steal at 1 million, but if you have pinch pennies anywhere, the 4th line is a logical place.

I thought Tambo was on a one way deal. Which is why he has to clear waivers to get to the AHL and since he makes more than 75,000 on the AHL he is subjected to re-entry waivers to come back up. A player on a 2 way deal, as the name implies, he can move freely between the minors and the majors. Am I missing something?

Tambo is definitely on a 2-way deal. Only needs to clear waivers to be sent down, but not to be called back up. Note: I don’t have time to read through the CBA at the moment, so this is based on memory, so I’m only 90% I’m right.

So then does a guy on a 2 way deal

have to clear waivers to go down if he has played a certain number of NHL games in the last season or something?

I thought it was fishy too, so I put off work to try and figure it out and now I have the answer (and I was wrong above). I’m about to make a fanpost explaining the whole thing!

by Beantown Canuck on Oct 5, 2010 12:09 PM PDT up reply actions

contracts have nothing to do with waivers.

1 and 2 way contracts are completely independent of waivers. they simply affect pay scale, whereas waivers is based on games played and/or years of experience.

correct… see upcoming fanpost.

They missed the point. They posted about why entry level players don’t have to go through waivers at all. Not about why certain players (i.e. Tambo and Perrault) must pass waivers to go down to the minors, but don’t need to clear re-entry waivers to come back up. Await my post :)

Baited breath

Seriously. Would be nice to have this finally cleared up. Thanks in advance.

Shove it in your addendum.

I don't get this...

…the team prefers hanging onto Desbiens instead of Tambellini? If he is claimed I will be rather annoyed…

Ya our 4th line has been downgraded with these two guys there.

by CdP on Oct 5, 2010 10:33 AM PDT up reply actions

Tambo’s too small for AV’s vision of the fourth line.

Disappointed

that Desbiens and Bolduc are on the roster. Is that just another way of saying I’m disappointed that Rypien and Burrows are hurt? Hopefully they go back to Manitoba when Ryp and Burr are back.

by CdP on Oct 5, 2010 10:05 AM PDT reply actions

I like Bolduc, he’s no Brendan Morisson, but he did a good job last year, he’s a solid fourth line center.

And if Desbiens keeps crashing and going to the net, I think he’ll be an asset.

by Sandwich76 on Oct 5, 2010 11:54 AM PDT up reply actions

I think Rypien is going to bump Desbiens as soon as he’s healthy. Not sure what
s going to happen once Burrows is healed up.

by SteveNux on Oct 5, 2010 12:10 PM PDT up reply actions

I think it depends on who is in AV’s doghouse at the time. I would think Torres bumps down to the third line, either Burr or Sammy goes to the second and either Schaefer-Hansen-glass or Desbiens gets scratched.
