"We talked about puck management, and there's a player here who we expect to be solid at both ends of the rink," Vigneault said. "Most of the times where Mikael (Samuelsson) has got himself in trouble or the team in trouble it's exactly because of that - puck management."

Who would have thought AV would call himself Marcness?

I KNEW it! He always reads NM and gets all these ideas, and claims them as his own!
We were just talking about snubbing Sammy. Keep it up Marcness! (AV!) Keep listening to us!

Yep. FU Sweden…The Sequel…Eat it Syrup Sucker!

He could have thrown in a bunch more. Nice to see the coach going for the always effective “They don’t have to like me, they just have to play for me…” school. Especially well timed for the break. By the time the Devils get here, the guys should be a pack of ravening dogs ready to pounce.

Its worked for a lot of coaches. From Bowman to Keenan, Quinn to Francis ( the Cat had a pretty acid tongue, if I remember correctly )…use sparingly and you have “great success”.

Use too much and you are fired as often as Keenan as well.

I think the hilarious thing about “little person” is that it’s the only politically correct term that is more condescending and seemingly more offensive than the term it was meant to replace.
(I think it was Louis CK who said that, or might have been Ricky Gervais, but it was some comedien)

But I agree with Bean that it seems more offensive.

telling them that in private is one thing. In the media is something else entirely. That is going to embarrass players and piss them off.

I'm sorry but

if that’s public embarassment and humiliation to you, you must have a mighty thin skin. I don’t think AV’s doing anything egregious here, and yes, if he did it all the time I’d wonder about his effectiveness. There is nothing wrong with calling out people to inspire better performance, and if publicly is the way to make it stick, then publicly is the way to do it. Hardly humiliation worthy words though.

Sammy’s name is all over the hockey media, I saw it in three articles so far, all quoting what AV said. When the coach singles you out, in front of the whole world, it must be pretty embarrassing, if you ask me.
It’s a different thing if you are a rookie, like Tambellini. In his case, nobody knows him outside a small circle, and rookies make mistakes all the time. They are supposed to.
But with Sammy, he is a veteran, and I am sure that his pride is hurting, at this moment.

Hopefully he responds positively, but if I was AV, I would make sure that I don’t mention his name in the media (other than in a positive manner), for a long long time.
I’m just sayin’.

Los Angeles, CA

by AttilaS on Oct 28, 2010 10:00 AM PDT up reply actions

Well

if you look at the whole thing, first of all a question was asked directly about Samuelsson, so the media was already getting on him. Secondly, AV’s comments are not very nasty; he says ’he’s working hard, but we expect…blah blah blah’. There is nothing but fact in that. Again, I disagree that there’s any public humiliation here. It’s AV stating what the media already knew anyways about a particular player and their performance this year so far.

In the end, I believe this will be good news for the Canucks either way; son of sam will pick his shit up, and that means everyone on his line and the fans will all benefit.

We will have to agree to disagree here. You are right that AV’s comments were not nasty, but that’s not the point. The point is that AV is implying that Sammy’s is personally responsible (along with a handful of other names) for the Canuck’s poor defensive performance. A team that has 22 names, his name was called out (along with two more).

As it just happened, yesterday I was participating in a group activity, and the moderator made a public comment at me. Later he denied it, and maintained that it was just a “general” comment. I can assure you that I was pretty pissed off, since I thought that he should have done that comment privately.
You don’t really know how it feels, until it happens to you personally.

On the flip side, in defense of your view, this is professional sports/show business, where a lot of things are discussed publicly. So, the players need to develop a thick skin, to deal with the media. You are right about that.

Three

That’s how many tantrums a coach gets in his first year, adding one for each season he’s with the team (not to exceed three per year).

Call-outs are also limited to three/season, but the variable is how well the team is doing: the better the standings, the more call-outs the coach gets.

Quick question: any opinion on the captain of the Moose? I see they did the same thing Buffalo did: asked each player, then selected. Baumgartner seems to have accepted that he wasn’t going to be on the big team, and if he’s captain he’s probably not getting called up (thought I would have had him rather than Parent). Looks like a positive replacement for Keane, who replaced him earlier.

Should be pretty ridiculous. When our team is not playing, the articles become more and more like a good Seinfeld episode…about nothing. AV was nice to the media by throwing them a bone, i.e. calling out a few players. Now they have something to write about for 2 or 3 days…what are they gonna write about when the “Sammy needs to pull up his socks” story gets old (already has)…

It’s interesting that everyone is talking about Sammy getting called out, but the Sedins got called out in that article too. I guess it’s because of the article title, but AV does also say that the Sedins and Tambellini had too many turnovers. And honestly, I don’t think he said anything wrong. He is a pretty blunt guy and he usually calls it like it sees it. I think part of what MG and AV look for in players is to be able to take the criticism they get and turn it around in their game. They shouldn’t have to pussyfoot around their players at all. I’m in agreement that AV can’t do this too often, and I don’t think he does. He just doesn’t patronize anyone.

AV seems to me to be psychologically astute to the point he knows where and when to stop with the criticism and who to motivate with criticism. Truthfully, Sammy has seemed to me to be in a bit of a fog. Plus he shoots too often from absurd angles rather than pass at those times.

I’ve noticed that too about him in regards to him shooting. It seems like as soon as he gets the puck in the offensive zone he lets it go, no matter where he is, or how many people are in front of him. I wonder if he noticed that time where he held on to the puck for a bit, THEN shot it resulted in an good play for Raymond to score…

…Burrows was injured. They did experiment with switching SoS and Burr during the season, but there was a better distribution of scoring having Burrows with the Twins and Sammy with Kes and Raymond. I think that will be the best setup when Burr comes back.
