Above is Luongo's post game interview (h/t Botchford). You gotta like how Luongo is handled the reporters today: with comedic gold. Before the game Lou joked: "We decided to give Schneids the night off tonight, so I got the tap on the shoulder and I'm ready to go."
Love it. For the record, that's 2 solid games in a row for Luongo. He was excellent in Chicago as well. BTW, a great post game article and attitude from Botchford here.

So far, the way I count it, Lou has earned us at least 4 points this season. Would not have made it to OT and won last night, and would not have gotten points against LA and Chicago, without him. It’s no knock on CoSchneids, he has played very well in his two starts and I’ve been very impressed, but the fact is he has yet to have to fight to earn his team points this season, and I’m interested to see how he responds to such a situation. Let’s see CoSchneids win us a game with his team plays 30 min of fail in front of him the last half of the game.

He was fanfuckingtastic last night, but i’m gonna stay with I think he shoulda got the first one. Not saying it wasn’t an outstanding shot, but that’s a lou stop. All the Lou haters are gonna need a bit of salt to go with the crow they’ll have to eat after this season I think.

Yes
It was definitely an awesome shot, that’s not what I’m saying. I’m saying 10 million Lu needs to get the odd one of those. This is no anti-lu comment, really…just saying those are the 10 million dollar saves. He made a few of those saves last night, just not that one. More than anything it was the fact that it was the second shot of the game. I know, I know, he can’t get em all, blah blah blah. If he has to miss one perfect shot, let it be when we’re up 3-0.

The best part is, we only need Schneids to be a solid backup this year and give the guys a chance. Seems like they really wanna play for him too (or are scared shitless the backup is in). As long as he works on improving his game and pushing to showcase himself as a possible number one, we are looking very solid between the pipes this year indeed.
Mistake one: reading PD comments. Just read the articles, the comments are where dreams go to die. - YC
No no no no no.
I was trying to tell everyone who would listen, keep playing Schneids against opponents who can’t score anyways, and pad those stats. If we aren’t going to use him, might as well trade him when his value is at its peak. Who needs a No.1goalie?
Look what Dallas got for Mike Smith… I would love to get my hands on a proven top 6 guy, or sure-thing youngster waiting for his chance in the minors.

Guess I was vague. i didn’t mean he could be a number one here. That’s what I maent by showcasing. He will have to go in the next year or two. I just want him to keep improving to raise his value so we can get more.

You can't
give those points directly to Lu, the team in front of him scored well also.
And don’t forget he also stunk it up for two games before these last two so what about those lost points?
Oh and his numbers so far still suck, below .500, barely over .900 SV% and almost 3 GAA.
He’s going to have to string together a lot more good games before he gets too much credit from me.
That being said, I believe he will, especially once October is done.
How do you tell when blue cheese has gone bad?
Well, my standard is, “how would we fair in the game if we got decent goaltending”. As in, if in a game where the goalie stunk, or in a game when the goalie was excellent, what difference would it have been if the goalie had instead been slightly above average?
I’d say, If we got decent goaltending in the two games Schneids won, we still win those games. If we got decent goaltending in Lu’s two crap games (LA and Minny), I still think we lose them both in regulation. Whereas if we got only decent goaltending in the LA or Chicago shootout losses, or last night’s OT win, we lose in regulation.
So that’s why I’d say that Lu has, stats be damned, earned the Canucks points they didn’t deserve and meanwhile hasn’t lost the Canucks points they should have had. Meanwhile, though he has done everything right and this is in no way a knock on him, CoSchneids simply hasn’t been in a position where his play has either earned or cost the team points.
by Beantown Canuck on Oct 27, 2010 11:53 AM PDT up reply actions
The one exception being the Anaheim game… he probably cost us a point, and potentially two, on that one.
by Beantown Canuck on Oct 27, 2010 11:54 AM PDT up reply actions
Which means I just completely contradicted my own argument. So I’ll amend it to say he has earned us 4 points whereas cost us 1 or 2. Which is a win in my books. A flawed win, but still a win.
by Beantown Canuck on Oct 27, 2010 11:55 AM PDT up reply actions
I disagree
you can’t just look at the final score, it depends when those goals were scored, team gets down/up, their style changes take more/less chances, get more/less chances, etc.
Big saves/bad goals at the right/wrong times can have more of an effect than just that tally.
Not saying Lu didn’t have a big part in those wins, or that he was solely to blame for the losses, it’s a team game, just that he needs to earn his big bucks more consistently.
How do you tell when blue cheese has gone bad?
I agree
Especially on big save/bad goal timing. Lou has a history of doing both – letting in a bad goal at the wrong time (see Gold Medal game), but also can make huge saves at the right time (see last couple games of LA series)
"Playin hurt, baby that don't faze me. I don't got time for pain. The only pain I've got time for is the pain I put on fools who don't know what time it is!"
The team fell apart in those Chicago losses
You can keep blaming Lou for those loses and he deserves some but we would have lost those series with any other goalie in the league in net.
by Canuckelhead on Oct 27, 2010 1:10 PM PDT up reply actions
I can
and I will, he plays like he’s paid to play and we could have won those series.
That’s what comes with being a supposed “superstar” goaltender, we didn’t supposedly build this team around a guy who should only win the games his team is supposed to, he is supposed to be a difference maker, and the only difference he made in most of those series was negative.
How do you tell when blue cheese has gone bad?

Captain “Lou” would never have been able to joke with the media like that. This is for the better, and Hank is handling media just fine as usual, except that he still hasn’t scored yet. We’re still waiting, buddy.
Hey
If he keeps getting assists at this pace he’s still going to break 100 points!

by Bobby Canuck on Oct 27, 2010 9:47 AM PDT up reply actions
That’s because he likes to pass to baby brother. I really thought he would start taking shots more this year after he got some confidence in shooting, but it seems like he’s content to set up plays. I’m guessing when D start covering Daniel a little more when they think Henrik hasn’t been shooting much all season, that’s when he’ll start potting a few in, then they’ll start respecting/covering Hank a bit more.
by sunshine and lollipops on Oct 27, 2010 10:10 AM PDT up reply actions
He still should be taking more shots. Even in the most prime scoring areas he prefers to dish it off to someone in an inferior position. But the Sedins bread and butter has always been short, quick passes across the crease or from behind the net.
Mistake one: reading PD comments. Just read the articles, the comments are where dreams go to die. - YC
Yeah, I wish he would take more shots. Unfortunately, II just don’t think he will until he feels like he has to. It’s always been really frustrating to watch him try to force a pass even when he has a scoring opportunity.

As most of us expected, dropping the captaincy is the best thing that could have happened for Lou. Great game last night.
I don’t care if Hank doesn’t score a goal all year. He keeps setting guys up who can put the puck in the net, we’re fine. He can be Hank Thornton for all I care. That tic-tac-goal last night was a thing of beauty.

Is playing Ryan Parent as much as we have. Last night was the best I’ve seen of him and he was… okay (for a number 6) but utterly unimpressive up until then. Can’t wait until we get three of our top four back, but for now I’ll take any one of them.
Well…last night was probably the worst game of the season for our current top two guys…The E brothers, but yeah.
Can’t wait for Hammer to be back…hopefully next game, and Ballard ( with one of those new fangled Messier helmets…hopefully )..soon after.

Bieksa looked good last night though right?
I thought Bieksa looked good last night. He made a couple key defensive plays to get the puck out when the pressure was really on and he continues to play against teams top players.
I was thinking the same thing last night about 5 minutes into the second.
Then Bieksa tried to hold a puck in at the blue line and I heard the famous words “Bieksa caught out of position and the Avs break out on a 2 on 1…” After which he lost his composure and took a penalty (which was pretty weak).
To be fair Avs dominated the second half and there was a lot of suck across the board. Bieksa was decent.
Mistake one: reading PD comments. Just read the articles, the comments are where dreams go to die. - YC
Was he 'decent'?
Or just ‘No more suck than anyone else’. Cuz if everyone else’s madd suck is his default position, or if everyone else plays bad and it makes him look status quo, then that’s not optimum.

I was more
commenting on kesrows saying ‘there was alot of suck across the board, and he looked decent’. I’m not really a bieksa fan or hater. I’ve said before and i’ll say it again: give him a change of scenery and he’ll probably have a better opportunity to reach his full potential as an offensive defenseman. I wouldn’t complain if he was traded, nor would I likely cheer. He does make an unusually high number of bad decisions for us many games, and I think he’s like the 5th guy on the chart in my opinion. If Alberts keeps improving as a stay at home guy, he and bieksa could make a really good pairing, but Bieksa’s always gonna pull jovo’s.
Ehrhoff was atrocious last night; he looked tired, lazy and out of position constantly. That shorthanded breakaway we let happen, did u see him casually skate back toward the play? Awful. Edler wasn’t a whole lot better.

Yeah well I just think people
are kidding themselves if they think there is such thing as an offensive D man that doesn’t make the odd bad decision that leads to an odd man rush. If one does exist his name is Keith or some other elite D man. I think Canucks fans expect way, way too much of Bieksa and if they changed their perspective a little they would see what he does for the team is usually a net positive over the course of 60 minutes. Every one has bad games though and when Bieksa has one everyone goes off the deep end about him. He doesn’t get the same amount of praise when he does well though. Perception usually isn’t reality. And I just feel like it gets out of hand here sometimes. Especially after a game when other guys were much much worse.

I wasn’t bagging on Juice, although I’ve been indifferent about much of it. Still I leave him alone for the most part because he gets it enough. I still wanna see the return of the Bieksa we signed to a nice big raise. I cut him some slack cuz of some flukey injuries the last couple of years. Regardless, he still needs to step it up. And I think he did that last night.
I should probably break up that long ass paragraph. But at least I put a few periods in there.

He is playing very strong opponents and isn’t a minus player. That’s pretty good for a D man is it not? And again just cause a guy isn’t getting points doesn’t mean he isn’t helping his team create chances. He might not be getting points right now but he is still doing a reasonable job for the team.

I never said he was either
find a quote on this thread where I called him “high risk/high reward”….where is it? I said there aren’t very many offensive defenseman who don’t make the odd bad decision. If they do exist they are the very cream of the crop. Bieksa is not that. He is a valuable contributor who gets unfairly cirticized by some people on this thread. He is a more offensive guy who right now is struggling to get points but is still facing the toughest quality of opponent of any D man on the team and is even. So the offense has dried up and he is still contributing and helping his team win.

Semantics
you’ve said it before or something equal like excusing his bad play by calling him an “offensive dman”.
I’m not getting into another of your distractive “that’s not what I said” arguments, I think it’s pretty clear what’s being discussed here and what was said by who.
How do you tell when blue cheese has gone bad?
It is clear
I talked about a guy getting unfairly criticized and you are unfairly criticizing him. He is a D man who takes risk at times to try to provide offense. The reward would be goals and points most of the time. I can agree with that. And he does have bad games and makes mistakes. Not excusing that in any way. When he is bad I am the first to admit it. Well not the first cause some of the people on this site are frothing at the mouth to criticize him but still you know what I mean. But when he is playing well he deserves praise like anyone else playing well. And right now he is providing a reward. Not in terms of points but in terms of strong defensive play. Top qual comp, no points but an even player. Right now that’s pretty good and lately he has been solid and we have won. If the points don’t come all season and he starts to falter in his own zone and becomes a liability then he will deserve what he is getting right now. But right now he doesn’t deserve the criticism he is getting.

BS
whenever somebody points out a Bieksafail you excuse it with “well you just notice it more because you’re looking for it”
(hint this is paraphrasing, no you probably didn’t say those exact words so please don’t start that again)
How do you tell when blue cheese has gone bad?
I think you are mistaken
when he makes an individual mistake I don’t excuse that mistake. I call him out for mistakes all the time. But I also point out when he makes a good play or when his “bad play” actually wasn’t that bad. And when people talk about his overall play and talk about him being a complete fail I point out that they are just looking for it. Those are two different situations. Individual plays I don’t excuse in any way. Overall play I don’t excuse either. But I will point out that some people seem to only pay attention to the bad things he does without providing a balanced take on his play.

My understanding
of those somewhat dubious statistics, is that they are really only useful over the long term and much more for team evaluation than individuals.
Meanwhile giveaways, pims and points are pretty direct indicators of an individual’s performance.
How do you tell when blue cheese has gone bad?
What about the fact
that Bieksa is third in hits, second in blocked shots, 3rd in takeaways and his giveaway to takeaway radio (3.3-1) is far better than Ehrhoff’s (6-1)? Pretty much middle of the back, in ice time as well, for a middle of the pack type D man.

And Ehrhoff leads in giveaway
to takeaway ratio. Leads in terms of having the worst one. Just one takeaway all season from Ehrhoff. So you are willing to look past a stat where Ehrhoff is the worst and still evaluate him properly but not willing to do that for Bieksa. If even just one stat where Bieksa is the worst is enough to condemn him then surely the same must be true for Ehrhoff.

Some people
are sick of the constant risk taking and nonchalant play, dumb penalties and giveaways.
Others seem to have endless patience for a veteran guy making far too much $ to be such a liability.
This is nothing new.
How do you tell when blue cheese has gone bad?
None of that can be said about Bieksa.
I think what gets lost in this whole argument is that Bieksa is not terrible all the time. He does face other teams’ top lines. He does play well a lot of the time. IMO he just doesn’t have the intelligence of an Ehrhoff or Hamhuis though. Another thing I noticed about him is that he gets caught standing still A LOT and when he pinches, much of the time he does not have the ability to decipher WHEN to properlycommit to a pinch. I call it reckless. I call it low IQ, or inability to make a smart decision in certain situations.
In my opinion, the truth about Bieksa lies smack in the middle of yoata and Section’s perspectives

Average yes
but in a way that is far too risky to be relied upon in big games, I just shudder when I think of this guy for 22 mins a game in the finals or semis.
Then again, to be fair, his play does seem to improve in the playoffs, which isn’t that surprising because to me his biggest problem has always been nonchalance, he just seems to be way too loose out there like he’s playing freakin pond hockey half the time, perhaps he just needs the extra pressure to keep him focused on doing things the right way.

Well if you can't see

Ehrhoff was shocking last night and had 2 points. So are points what we should be focusing on?

He is helping his team win games.
He was good last night. We won. He was good against Chicago and we got a point. He was good against Minny and we won. Lately he has been good and we have won.
Ehrhoff had a very bad game last night and only the 2 assists kept it from being perhaps the worst D man performance of the year. That’s what I saw anyway. Lots of posters here agree with that as we discussed above.

You’re the only one that brings that up. He’s a defenseman period. He’s got an even +/-, even though he has no points to balance it and see’s time against the other teams top players. You obviously see him through your “brown color glasses” but if you took them off you’d see a pretty decent d-man doing a better then average job. A guy we don’t want to lose cause defensive depth is obviously valuable and we have no one on the farm that can come close to replacing him.

Decent D are hard to find.
The way he’s ragged on here you’d think he was a huge liability. I’m trying to say that’s not the case. In fact he’s not only not a liability he’s a better then average guy who can play in the top 4 comfortably. Maybe not top two but top four. Those players are hard to find and a lot of the teams in the league don’t have them.
by Canuckelhead on Oct 27, 2010 7:27 PM PDT up reply actions
The thing is Sean, you could trade him to one of three four teams right now.
Montreal is still rumoured to want Juice. Anaheim would jump up and down and kiss Gillis’s hands for him, ( though, in the West sucks )
Columbus still has a need. Maybe Washington. Boston is looking for an offensive defenseman.
Juice gets the bad rap in Vancity. Right or wrong.
But he does have talent and some pretty mad skillz. I saw the one that Shorty called as “Bieksa caught up ice as the Avs come on the 2-1…”
But I also saw several plays at the blue line holding them in ( the first half the game especially ) A pinch with his skates holding the puck in against 2 guys, where he kicked it to his stick and got it to Hank I think..
He is the classic high risk/high reward defenseman. He gets guff for it because maybe the only skill he is lacking in is thinking the game as well as Keith and Doughty et al.
But his skills are what make him a easily traded player.

I know its all about the points and all.
But the reward is the scoring chance. Whether the guy getting the shot on the blue line turnover does something with it usually does not include that D’man.
Bieksa will be a player we all go “aww shit…see? Thats what I meant” when and if he ever gets that 2 cent head to catch up with the skills.
We saw it his first big year…we know he can do it.
The maddening thing is getting back there.

I don't see him
creating near the scoring chances that Erhoff, Edler, and even Hamhuis do, let alone Salo, Ballard will probably be better that way as well.
Look I’m not saying he doesn’t have any offensive ability, that would be silly, I’m just saying his O has dried up but a lot of us are still seeing an awfully risky game from him most nights.

about opinions based on nothing.
Those opinions seem to be based on Bieksa’a QualComp and Corsi Rel QOC which indicate he is facing the toughest competition of any of our D men yet is still an even player. And yoata is basing his on give aways and points. Those are both valid stats to base an opinion on. Seems to be we have got to the point where some stats point to him having a bad year and some to him playing well. Leading me to believe he is having a mediocre year. That’s probably a fair assessment. But he has been a little better of late. I think we can all agree on that.

a little mood lightener
at the expense of beantown’s profession (sorry):
When Grandma Goes To Court
Lawyers should never ask a Mississippi grandma a question if they aren’t prepared for the answer.
In a trial, a Southern small-town prosecuting attorney called his first witness, a grandmotherly, elderly woman to the stand.
He approached her and asked, ‘Mrs. Jones, do you know me?’
She responded, ‘Why, yes, I do know you Mr. Williams.
I’ve known you since you were a boy, and frankly, you’ve been a big disappointment to me.
You lie, you cheat on your wife, and you manipulate people and talk about them behind their backs.
You think you’re a big shot when you haven’t the brains to realize you’ll never amount to anything more than a two-bit paper pusher.
Yes, I know you.’
The lawyer was stunned Not knowing what else to do, he pointed across the room and asked, ‘Mrs. Jones, do you know the defense attorney?’
She again replied, ‘Why yes, I do.
I’ve known Mr. Bradley since he was a youngster, too.
He’s lazy, bigoted, and he has a drinking problem.
He can’t build a normal relationship with anyone, and his law practice is one of the worst in the entire state.
Not to mention he cheated on his wife with three different women.
One of them was your wife.
Yes, I know him.’
The defense attorney nearly died.
The judge asked both counselors to approach the bench and, in a very quiet voice, said,
‘If either of you idiots asks her if she knows me, I’ll send you both to the electric chair.’

Fair enough he has his argument
You’re right section. Not really fair of me to say. It’s just frustrating when you’re trying to make a point and rather then coming up with a counter point the person just says “Wrong” and goes on to argue about what I said when I said it. It gives the sense that the person isn’t actually interested in the discussion.

I'm interested
in why you took issue with me questioning Bieksa’s offense, since he clearly doesn’t have any, that is all.
I said “Wrong” because you said that I brought it up, which I didn’t, Section did.

I never took issue with questioning his offense
All I was saying was he’s not a waste of space. In fact he has value and more then a lot of people give him credit for and your voice is the loudest of that bunch. So, what would you do? Release him? Send him to the pressbox?

CC, I have an idea
to resolve the issues with that 3rd line, have yoata move up to the 2nd line and move dan down.
on the 2nd line, i can keep yoata in check myself (as long as Shifty doesn’t freak out), and the 3rd line of Section-Dan-Twitchy will most likely be able to get along.
just an idea. everyone can feel free to shred it to bits.

if not,
then move yoata to the 4th line, where the publishing crew has control. Yankee, Smo or WAACH would then have to move up to the 3rd.

I think yoata and I on a line could draw lots of penalties.
