Did The Vancouver Canucks Team Of Yore Invent The Term "Cougar"?
Well, according to the lady in this clip they did:
Is it true? Nothing solidly supports the claim. But it is a funny suggestion. Hat tip to Stevenux for the link.

I heard about this a long time ago, presumably before that video was made. Could just as easily be a myth… but I’ll just assume it’s true because I like that assumption.

Uh...
late 80’s? No, doubt it. I think the term is older than that, cuz it was used back in central alberta in that time…and trust me, they don’t pick shit up quickly in central alberta. I think grunge burst onto the local scene last year… (no i kid on that last part…partially)

I have been down here in Los Angeles since 1999. It seems Cougar is a relatively recent term around these parts – perhaps gaining traction in the mid 2000’s.
I certainly remember using the term regularly at my days at UBC in the early 90’s – so I kind of think it is a Canadian (and maybe Vancouver) orginated term.
I am now trying to popularize my favorite Canadian originated term – “Moose Knuckle”.
It is catching on quick.
i’ve had an American ask us what we meant by “gongshow”.

Check me out on Twitter. I try to keep it Canucks-related, but that's not always the case....
Bingo, bango, bongo, his name is Roberto Luongo.
Except that originated from some old-timey American TV show called The Gong Show. Then again, it’s certainly taken a more colloquial turn than what it originally was. And apparently it was around until the end of the 80s.

The guys that I went to high school with that played hockey
used to call things “gong shows”. I thought it was a primarily hockey specific term.

As someone old enough CC, we used it back when the show was on…usually in the context of “this game is a fucking gong show”.
( The show was on from about 76 to 80-ish)…referring to when their were fights, hits that were dirty, and other such small town, hate the guys in the other small town nonsense.
On a related note…at least in our small town Revelstoke dressing room, if you turned and ran from it, or were wimping out ( usually but not always referring to the other team )…you were Gene Gene the Dancing Machine…
