Who Is This Roberto Guy? And What Have You Done With Our Luongo?

Stay connected for news and updates

The Canucks don't take 3 of 4 possible points in their first 2 regular season games without the play of the Sedins-Samuelsson and Roberto Luongo. Does Lou look poised or what? 32 shots faced Saturday night and the only goals that get by him are a Justin Williams garbage goal on the PP and a couple in the shootout. Then he faces 42 shots against the Panthers tonight and the only goal that beats him is a ping pong shot off Alexander Edler's skate. That's only 2 goals against in regulation on 74 shots. Playing like that puts him in the top 5 in the NHL in goals against average (and best amongst goalies who have played more than 1 game, and same with save percentage.

I am excited about his play. You can see how his focus is there. He goes down into his butterfly much quicker. He's finding pucks. It doesn't hurt having goaltending coach Roland Melanson around full time. He's also getting some stronger play from his new-look defence for the most part, limiting crease traffic, controlling rebounds and limiting golden scoring opportunities. I like it. I know it's only 2 games in but I have to give credit where it's due. Keep it up, Lou! Now if only we could get some scoring from the other lines. The heat is on them now, not on the guy between the pipes.

What does Luongo think of all the shots he's facing? Well, he loves it:
