Wednesday Morning Coffee: Back to hockey (we hope)

Let's try this again, shall we?  Apart from Alex Burrows speaking to the media for what the team states will be the last any of them say anything about Auger-gate, we expect that this situation is going to at last whither and die.  Not that it hasn't been fun.  It had a great effect on the team and it's supporters, and also saw a surprising response across North America by fans and reporters who understood what we did all along: This isn't about Alex Burrows.  And believe it or not, the focus actually gets to be back to playing games, as the Canucks take on the Oilers in Edmonton before returning home to face Dallas Thursday.  More after the jump...

Star-divide

And while we have to say it's a relief to have said our peace on the whole thing (repeatedly) some "reporters" seem to not want to let it die.  So much so that they're trying to manufacture new scandal to keep it alive.  Rory Boylen wants you to know that Alex Burrows' words should be taken seriously, except you can't take anything Alex Burrows says seriously, because he's a bad, bad man!!!  Sound familiar?  So imagine my shock when I discover that this writer for The Hockey News has a regular column called... ready for this?  A Ref's Life.  So of course it's a fair and objective piece.  He claims Burrows should not be given the benefit of the doubt because of a tussle after the recent loss to Minnesota that was so extraordinary, the NHL must have tried to cover it up, because the only mention of it I have found is in his column.  Pathetic...

On to the real news, the Canucks are heading into Rexall Place without Willie Mitchell, but Aaron Rome could be back tonight, as well as Ryan Johnson.  Ok, so that's not exactly reassuring, but the Canucks certainly don't seem to be taking the Oilers lightly, well aware of past efforts against cellar dwellers that have blown up in their faces.  The Oilers right now are looking as bad a team as I have seen in years.  Completely without confidence or desire, they seem to be just going through the motions, but that's no reason for the Canucks to not bring their A game.  As Tommy Larscheid says, "Never give a sucker an even break".  While I don't think a 6-0 stomping like the one they suffered at the hands of the Colorado Avalanche is in order, an effort that gets them two points and out of the game without any more injuries to the banged-up D-core would suffice.  Make sure and read all the pre-game goodness in Sean's preview, and come back for the game thread tonight.

The random breakfast muffin sampler plate...

Anyone else feel a little ripped off knowing Mitchell is out tonight yet Malkin got a hat trick last night?  That's more double standard of rule application than any kind of bias against the Canucks, but either way considering the last week the optics of that just stink... Just when it looked like the Leafs were gonna turn it around... they blew a 3 goal lead and lost to Atlanta.  No heroics from Kessel last night, and you have to wonder if they're gonna try and get Kaberle to waive his NMC and actually begin the rebuild...  Some are calling it a good move, but you have to know it still kind of stings to see Rod Brind'Amour have his captaincy taken away and given to Eric Staal.  Yes we know Rod's play has deteriorated in a big way, but he still led that team to a cup.  He will retain a 'A', but you have to think this will be his last year... An interesting article from Behind The Net shows we are getting into Overtime season,  I wonder if this season will skew those stats, as it seems there's been so many more ot/so games...

That's all I got for ya today (seriously low energy/tolerance for stupidity level at the moment) but any relevant news will be posted in the comments, and as always stick close by for breaking news at your home for Canucks news, Nucks Misconduct.

Canucklehead, I’m really enjoying the added value of your morning posts to NM! For the fans out on the east coast (or elsewhere), you give us something to read during the day, wheres most Canucks related updates tend to come out a lot later in the day for us. Kudos!

This is turning out to be a very intriguing season. Yesterday both Detroit and Chicago lost (along with the Kings), we are even with Calgary, with two games in hand…it seems like this season is up for grabs for anybody who wants it badly enough.

The Canucks have a real chance to take over their division in the next couple of weeks, they should grab the opportunity. Edmonton looks pitiful these days, but it is very dangerous to approach this game as playing with the losers, it had backfired at the Canucks before.

Thanks man

I am thrilled with all the positive feedback my posts have received. Soon I might even be able to pay per post and not per word as I am right now…
heh just kidding… thanks to Sean and Mike for bringing me aboard what I think is one of the best damn Canucks blog on the internets

agreed

we are in a pretty good situation heading into this road trip, barring a total disaster we should come out of it just fine… and we are starting to see some chinks in the armor of the Blackhawks… will we see a late season/1st round collapse from them? I won’t be entirely shocked if that happens

Seriously, I am very excited for a Canucks game that doesn’t, y’know, spark league-wide controversy. Fingers crossed.

Sometimes I forget how good it is so I watch it again. Mallrats, Chasing Amy and Clerks are all great. Even Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back was pretty funny if not a little over the top.

a great read on Burrows/Auger/Maclean

from the always solid Tom Benjamin: http://canuckscorner.com/tombenjamin/?p=1417

“But fine, Auger did not explicitly threaten Burrows. Here’s MacLean again:

"It’s inconceivable for an official to tell a player he’d get him back. It’s not inconceivable that he would do it."

Exactly. And that "conceivable" idea – that Auger would give Burrows penalties in one game for actions taken in another – is the only issue. That is the accusation. That’s the integrity issue and that’s the issue Colin Campbell has not addressed. Ex-referees like Paul Stewart and unnamed existing officials have acknowledged that it happens. It should not.

Does Burrows make life difficult for the officials? Sure. That’s Auger’s motive, his reason for abusing his power. The Smithson tape is evidence against Auger, not against Burrows. Payback is okay as long as the referee doesn’t explicitly threaten payback before he does it? That’s nonsense. The only good defense of Auger involves defending the calls he made on Burrows. At best, both were extraordinarily bad calls and I don’t buy coincidence as the explanation.

I don’t want to see Auger referee another NHL game. I don’t trust him. "

Isn’t the only issue whether or not Auger TOLD Burr he was going to get him and then did. From what I have read Refs have a long history of targeting a guy to get him back for events of earlier games. They just don’t tell the player they are going to do it. And that was the issue. I say was cause I think this story is, thankfully, dying.

yes thankfully… the one positive is the team and it’s fans have been inspired by all this, Vigneault has come out of this looking so strong…

From what I gather, this “dive” is only the second diving infraction in Burrows’ career, the first arising in 2006. What kind of a diver is this? His reputaion as a diver is underserved.

"Insult is the price of clarity"

His repeated use of this sentence suggests he thinks it’s more pithy, profound and powerful than it actually is. I’m not sure exactly what it means: "I’m being insulted because I was clear"? "I appeared to be insulting Burrows but actually I was just being clear"?

Greek to me. He may as well have said "Turnips are the price of sincerity." Or "Vaseline is the price of getting *****ed."

oops…Was is the right thing to say. The way this has got us all nipping at the subject, the fact, our opinions, and each others’ heels in an attempt to rationalize it away has been quite the ride . I have not seen this in our sport for a hell of a long time.

Its like, as Hunter S. used to say, “its like judging people on whether they voted for Nixon in ’68. …That treacherous old wardheeler….” and so forth.

I will be judging those members of the media that turned into a ravening pack on Vancouver and its fans forevermore. Cox, or course, but some of the others were more surprising. Admit it, who saw MacLean doing what he did?

I used to, for instance, occasionally like Damien Cox. I will never read that MF again.

Some used it to make a point, others used the noteriety of the situation to make money.

TSN, for instance, had their guys all pull the party line and mention Burr’s “rep” at every opportunity.

SNET was much better. Yet, both show lots of NHL games…hell, we see more of the ’Nucks on SNET Pacific then anywhere else!

Funny of how that works huh? Both rights holders, but one didn’t sell their soul to the “MAN”.

Anyhow, apart from using the term “Auger” as a verb in the future for marginal calls, I vote for doing what AV said…and Section ( who has been the foil for a LOT of us the last week. Thx again Mr. 312 ) seconded.

Lets just STFU about it and move on.

The Oilers are there to give a good swift kick too, we have a bunch of forwards that will require a move soon.

Our 1st line STILL kicks ass, Burrows is still Mr. Everything…

And the COTU fuckers that used our little crisis to kick us when we were down can STILL kiss out asses. Even the Flames fans that ventured over the past week were better than that bunch!

Not here on SBNation of course…but the comments sections on some of Canada’s newspaprers in the last week on this story were pretty illuminating…to say the least!

Sportsnet is a regional provider. That’s why you can’t watch the Flames or Oilers lose on Sportsnet West if you live in the Pacific region. Sportsnet doesn’t deal with the league like TSN does. They pay the Canucks for the rights to their games. TSN is a national rights holder so they deal directly with the league. That is probably the reason for the different ways the two networks covered the story.
