Roster Cuts
Yann Sauve back to junior.
Taylor Ellington, Pierre-Cedric Labrie, Evan Oberg, Eric Walsky, Daren Machesney, Travis Ramsay to Manitoba.
Ronald Petrovicky and Dave Scatchard released.
No big surprises here. Oberg will probably play top minutes in Manitoba, perhaps with Ellington? I only see either of those guys getting called up if there is a trade.
Nice you posted this as I updated the post.
Sad about Oberg but he’s got a good future. I really thought Grabner was getting the hook too.

Yeah I’m kind of suprised Grabner isn’t on the list, but I guess he’s getting another shot.
Burrows + Canucks = Stanley Cup!
Grabner
…would need a miracle to make this team. Even with Demitra and Schneider going on LTIR, I still only see one spot for one of Shirokov, Hodgson and Grabner. And that’s the order I’d rank them right now too. Only exception is if they decide to start Cody up here (because they can send Shirokov to Manitoba), and see how he does for 9 games.
Shirok makes the team, I think, regardless of whether we keep Cody or not. If Cody makes it too, then we’ll need to trade away another player (or 2 for 1 or whatever) to make room.
That’s all conditional on a healthy team, tho. Currently, Schneider and Demitra have opened up 2 more roster spots already. Those spots will disappear if everyone gets healthy together, but w/Schnedier, Demitra and Salo plus the usual misc injuries that accrue to any team during a season, the new guys may get more ice time than we thought.
And as long as the team is doing well in the standings, why not? Roll 4 lines, let everyone play and learn, and don’t overtax the team prior to the playoffs.
Shirokov
I think he probably makes the team in any event as well, but if both he and Hodgson make it, who do you cut?
I think Hansen and pretty much every other forward currently on the team brings more to the Canucks this season than Hodgson. Fans just see the potential in him and want to develop him properly into a great player in the coming years. We should be patient.
He’s good for 19 and ready for the AHL. He doesn’t have to clear wavers to send him to Junior and he’s not going to get much ice time in the NHL. I don’t think it’s worth cutting a good player from the roster to bring him in before he’s ready.
Where this gets complicated is how Gillis going to solve the cap issue. If he trades away some forward depth for picks, we may see a spot for him after all.
Grabner just looks “tight” to me, I think the talent is thee, and in flashes it shows. He’s not gonna make the team at this pt, but the extra experience will help him in case he’s a call-up during the year.
BTW, The Province reportas that M. Schneier just went on LTIR, so we’re under the cap now and Gillis can take his time deciding on his next move.
How long ’til Salo joins him on LTIR? I give it 10 games max!

Tim-mey!
and the Lords of the Underworld… best band EVER!
Sami plays 70 games this year…cuz he has to have ONE of those years…right?
vancitydan
technically, the Canucks is still over the cap as the salaries of players on LTIR still count. But the team is allowed to go over the cap because of the injuries. When the players come back from injuries, the team will have to make changes to stay under the cap again. The league theoretically can investigate any false claim of injury, but I doubt it’s done in practice. I think Gillis is hoping that by the time they’re healthy, some teams will be desperate for some additional help after a bad start.
I like your analysis
I think this has part of the game plan. Keep players on the LTIR as long as they need and use that space for CAP relief. The trades will not happen as far as I am concerned.
I love his shot…I just wish it would hit the net.

too bad about oberg. oh well, a year with the moose will help him.
http://canuckpuckbunny.blogspot.com
GO CANUCKS GO!
Oberg was a fantastic surprise, but as stated, had no shot with the current depth. I like him in Manitoba logging big minutes and being brought along slowly.
I think Sauve will step out large this year and hopefully gain some World Junior experience as well as a year in a big leadership role.
i agree, oberg had only the tiniest chance of cracking the roster. i think that a year or two with the moose would be great, and when a few of our vets move out in the upcoming years, he’ll be our next great thing on defence.
i didn’t notice much of sauve, but he probably has similar potential.

GO CANUCKS GO!
Sauve did some good stuff. Those two young d-men have been the biggest pleasant surprise of camp for me. I was despairing over how our cupboard was bare when it comes to youth production of D in our system when preseason started but I don’t feel the same any more. The ghost of Luc Bourdon is smiling down on these two kids.

Fer-ri-er-o
How come all the broadcasters call him Ferrio? Anybody know if he calls himself that or are all the talking heads lazy?
I wouldn't trust
anything the play by play or colour man of an American team says. (Thinking of the NHL 10 guys mis-pronouncing so many names) HERE COMES MATT CARLE (pronounced CARLEE by Bill Clement) Ugh.
SOB in the box. Awww…sweet hockey is back.

SOB back in mid season form.
There ain't no turning back when our train is off its track, and there's nothing we can do but watch it crash (watch it crash)

GO CANUCKS GO!
Are we playing the cut game?
Cool…add to it, the ones that won’t make it through waivers…so far I have Rome and Glass
vancitydan
rome and glass arnt as terrible as i was led to believe…
Then again.. this is the first game ive been able to watch
Both have been quite noticeable this preseason. Glass looks like he could be another Burrows, and Rome is better at the offensive game than reputed, and not as bad at the defensive game as read about.
vancitydan
They’ve done okay, but not quite enough for the NHL. Rome is a little rough around the edges, but has flashes of good. Glass is… hm… Well, he’s tough, which is nice.
Not sure on the rules, but they may need to be waived to get sent down though. Glass was a Panthers pick from a few years back, and Rome played in the NHL with CBJ last year.
I think they have played enough in the NHL that they have to clear…pretty sure anyhow
Most teams have scouts. Going unbeaten in the preseason and playing well is sure to get both noticed by the other teams.
vancitydan
Lesson Learned
We only need to play 10 minutes a game. We’ve done that twice this pre-season so far, and won both.
Olie has looked pretty good tonight, from what I have seen, anyhow.
WTF is the Flames team doing in the Fraser Valley?
vancitydan
you mean the AHL team?
If so, i have no idea.. They have the most horrid travel schedual in the league though..
If you mean they have an exhibition game in Abbotsford or something.. then i feel its my duty to tell you im out of the loop
The Flamers AHL affiliate.
The Heat…stupid name too.
Names should be nouns…true nouns dammit!
LOL
vancitydan
well, we have the Campbell River Storm in my hometown……
http://canuckpuckbunny.blogspot.com
GO CANUCKS GO!
We can’t call him Pudge any more though…can we?
Tommy and Shorty said it though, he has another gear this preseason.
“Pretty fly for a white guy”
vancitydan
he won’t ever lose that name. it’s stuck in everyone’s hearts.
ok, that sounds incredibly sappy.

GO CANUCKS GO!
They’ll make it their, probably.
There seems to be some question about fans having “divided loyalties”
vancitydan
Oh, like they pointed out in the 1st period.
Ducks have got one big fucking Russian. Geno Artoookin (sic)
vancitydan
Man…he wanted to come here to learn from Bobby Lou…Razer looked unbelievable on that one.
Who gets it…don’t know, but Raycroft is making it tough on Schneids.
ANOTHER!
Jeeezusss

NOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the canucks.com feed just died on me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GO CANUCKS GO!
sometimes i play NHL 10
And im down..
sayyy….
1-0 at the start of the third.. and im bummed right out. The sky is falling.. etc, etc
But i have confidence in these young canucks simply cause there real hockey player.. and not my lame ass trying to fulfill my hockey player fantasies
Like the stupid new article about security guys for heads of state and the like being armed and here for the Olympics?
Duh!!
vancitydan
Sammy gets a goal right off the hop here…or a penalty called.
You know that AV gave the boys a “chat”.
And the Wonder Twins will activate.
“Shape of…a goal!”
vancitydan
Yeah, but it doesn’t look like Raycroft has enough bulk to cover a lot of the net when he’s down. He needs to wear some cheaters.

my computer itself was fine. it was just my internet connection that went crappy. i’m using wireless internet in the place where i’m living this year, and it disconnected on me during all that nonsense. couldn’t get canucks.com to work again, couldn’t even get team1040 to work.

How about Raycroft v Schneider. Who stays? I vote Rayzor.
I've seen enough to know that I've seen too much.
The Team 1040 guys are saying the job looks like Rayzor’s right now. Myself..I’m not so sure.

Objection Your Honor…all evidence for this august assemblage is not in yet m’lord.
I move that we reconvene after Schneider’s last start this weekend.
vancitydan
They gotta make Ray look bigger somehow. You will be cursing him for top shelf goals against this year…..
AV says he was very happy with Raycroft’s performance.
I've seen enough to know that I've seen too much.
AV:
-Thought Rayzor played well and gave the team a chance
-Pope, Grabner and Hodgson played better in the 3rd.
-maybe 1 roster move tomorrow (Parrish?)
-Raycroft has been good every time they put him in.
-Lou plays Calgary, Schneider plays Edmonton
-OB has done everything he can to work on being the best player he can. Sometimes he hangs on to the puck too long and the puck ends up in our net.
The Rypien fight is already on YouTube. I posted it on the front page. Damn that was awesome!
Yeah, it’s got to be Parrish that goes.
Not bad, but I want to see what he can do vs. some of the more established fighters in the league.
I've seen enough to know that I've seen too much.

Could be Bliznak too. He’s not going to make the team, so he’s going to be sent to Manitoba sooner or later.

Maybe it’s just me, but I could do without all these last-minute heroics when the games start to count. I’m in good health, but I don’t think my heart will be able to take it…
