Canucks-Hodgson/Sharks Game Thread
It seems to be all about Cody Hodgson tonight. All eyes will be on him as he faces continual pressure and now gets a spot on the top line and will get power play time. So just to add to that pressure, I will give a brief period-by-period analysis of CoHo's performance. Feel free to hang out and chime in.
Period 3 & OT & Shootout
Goals: 0
Assists: 0
PIM: 0
Assessment: Continual fail. The Canucks came back to win in the shootout. Hodgson was not one of the 3 Nuck players selected in the shootout. He didn't earn it. He was outshined by several players tonight: Grabner, Raymond, Hansen...Great game by Hansen and Raymond. It will be interesting to read the media's take on Hodgson's play tomorrow.
Period 2
Goals: 0
Assists: 0
PIM: 0
Assessment: Hodgson and the team are stinking up the joint tonight. There's no gel there or anywhere. Hodgson is playing with Kesler and Raymond. It isn't translating into anything.
Period 1
Goals: 0
Assists: 0
PIM: 0
Assessment: I think every other Canucks line outshined the top line in Period 1. Hodgson did miss a glorious chance with 1:00 left. Was that him coughing the puck up in his own zone as well? No chemistry with Burrows and Kesler yet.

This game needs to start so we can start judging hodgson even more than we already have.

Hodgson
Looks like he’s behind in his conditioning and timing, but also like he is playing with very little confidence, thinking too much instead of moving his feet and letting his very good hockey instincts take over. Has the ability, but needs a pep talk.
by yoata on Sep 23, 2009 8:37 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs

It looks like he’s intimidated when he gets the puck and he wants to get rid of it quickly or loses it.

by Beantown Canuck on Sep 23, 2009 9:28 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Sweden may be more rounded than Russia but the elite level skill of the Russians makes me think only one country has the players to stop them. No one else has Richards, Morrow, Doan type checking line players than can score too.

That would get protested in the regular season, though. Tough call: the player stopped his forward momentum, but the puck never stopped. Could be disqualified.

by idunno723 on Sep 23, 2009 9:46 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
The shootout goals? Yes, an argument can be made on Edler and Raymond’s goals.
by cyxj on Sep 23, 2009 9:49 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Borderline for sure. I would rather see tem allowed since you want goals and excitement in the shootout.

well definitely for my team but really for any team.

by Thursday on Sep 23, 2009 9:51 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I would be interested to know how many team would have been affected by the shootout in terms of making the playoffs or not shootout versus tie.
by Section 312 on Sep 23, 2009 9:53 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not a lot of difference, actually. Brophy did a comparison, and one team got in on each side that wouldn’t otherwise, I seem to recall. Mostly, it was a shift in positioning & opponents.
by Thursday on Sep 23, 2009 9:54 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yes, I would like to see some stats on that.
I really don’t might a W-L-T point system because I feel that only 2 points should ever be doled out in a game.
by cyxj on Sep 23, 2009 9:54 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think you should get 3 for a win so that teams go for wins late in games.

because we are probably a bit biased.
by idunno723 on Sep 23, 2009 9:52 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Which ones?
I think Edler’s was legit, but Raymond’s would go to review and probably denied.
by Thursday on Sep 23, 2009 9:50 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not sure Thurs…the spinerama is a pretty time tested move.
The puck was moving forward.
The whole idea is to make it creative.
Make it fun for the fans.
Besides, the goalies have stopped it sometimes.
Just spread your legs wider.

I thought so.
It is entertainment right.
The Sharks in all the post interviews are saying it was OK.
Mclellan said something along the same lines.
“It is entertainment.”
Good to see them not make a big deal out of it…especially in the preseason
