Sharks Line-up For Tonight / Hodgson's Time To Shine
From San Jose Mercury News, the Sharks will dress the following players:
Ferriero-Thornton-Setoguchi
Marleau-Pavelski-Clowe
McLaren-Malhotra-Ortmeyer
Shelley-Nichol-Staubitz
Murray-Demers
Joslin-Blake
Huskins-Callahan
Nabokov-Greiss
That Ben Ferriero guy on the top line has 2 goals and 1 assist in preseason for the Sharks. Keep an eye on him.
The Canucks' roster was posted below. This is Hodgson's big shot, as he will play on the top line (reportedly on the wing) with Burrows and Kesler.
Said Vigneault:
"He's more of an offensive type player, so we should try him on the power play and we should try him with players that have more than offensive capability," said head coach Alain Vigneault. "We'll give him that opportunity and we'll see what the young man can do."

Cody only looks iffy if you think of Shirok as a rookie. If you instead consider Shirok a vet (cuz of his prior KHL experience and his age) then there’s room for both he & Cody … IMHO … in a cup-run year, with Cody being the true hi-potential rookie learning the ropes as the season progresses.
Ironically, Shirok might have to go to the AHL first if the Canucks want to keep him so that the team can first arrange a trade for someone like Hansen or Hordi or whoever will have to go to make room. It’s Whack-A-Mole time for Mike Gillis: for every good player he wants to keep he has to whack another down!
From what I’ve seen, Shirok is a lock… but I think he may start the season on the Moose. You’re right about trades as they still have to do something to beat the cap and I’m looking forward to seeing Gillis’ solution. He has really impressed me this offseason.
Hodgeson could make the team if they trade some of their salary away, Currently though, Hodgeson just hasn’t impressed me as Shirokov has. The Canucks want to ice their best team and Cody has proved himself as a Moose, but that’s not an option. Does he then default to the Canucks? He has to earn his spot. He also has a pretty hefty cost towards the cap-hit (for a 19 year old) if they don’t make some trades.
Its funny…poor Cody’s every move on the ice is dissected by thousands of fans.
“He has been just OK”. “Moments….sure, but can he do it for 82 games?”
“Yes…you can see the talent….” “Its stupid he can’t go to the AHL…”
I have been impressed by his talent as well.
For me though, the reason I think he makes the team (as a 13 forward, in and out as circumstance permits…) is that he is quite simply an NHLer now. He acts like one. He talks like one. He seems to think the game like one. As both Botch and McIntyre did in recent stories, I am willing to give him a qualified pass until that nerve in his back heels.
Once he has that explosive 1st step again, I trust his legs will once again be working as fast as his brain is on the ice.
That will augment the positives we have seen, disperse the doubts that have been brought on by people watching him just be physically unable to make that good 1st step..
Even at 90 percent tonight, I look forward to what this line can do.
Just a thought. Is Heater not playing because he thinks Cdn fans will boo him you think?
I don’t think we would be as lusty about it as Calgary was, but there would be a few…He might as well get used to it though, especially at Northlands…

Oh Heater: The Coach denied that possibility.

GO CANUCKS GO!
I really think we need to find a spot to keep Hodgson. Another year in junior would stunt his growth. Remember what happened when Bourdon had that great camp but we had to send him back to junior? He was a man against boys. He didn’t get any better and more than likely developed some bad habits cause he could get away with cheating a little against players that were inferior to him. It took him a while after that to get back to his best and to crack the Canucks lineup. Hodgson would be the same way in my opinion. He would regress if playing in junior this year. He needs to be kept with the team and they need to find a way to play him. He looks to me and by the sounds of what other players are saying about him he has the character to play at this level. There is no doubt in my mind he has the skill and I don’t think he is a liability in his own end. So I can’t see how anything other than the big club is in our best interests.

Does he develop any better being a part-time player up here? ‘Tis a puzzlement, and I’m glad I don’t have to solve it.
I've seen enough to know that I've seen too much.
I honestly think he is 4-6 months from being a bonafied NHL player but if you send him back to junior he is closer to two years away. This whole year and then most of another year of AHL to get back to the level he is at now. I honestly feel that’s how much players regress when they are ready for the NHL but have to go back to junior. I mean seriously would any of us be able to motivate ourselves at work if we were in a similar position?
by Section 312 on Sep 23, 2009 5:54 PM PDT up reply actions
Well, I think the best option is to keep him here, even if he is the 13th guy. Can we do that?
by Sean Zandberg on Sep 23, 2009 5:55 PM PDT up reply actions
Man, a TON of pressure on the kid tonight. Hope he can deal with it.
by Sean Zandberg on Sep 23, 2009 5:56 PM PDT up reply actions
It’s a shame though cause it’s a flawed system. If he could go play some AHL this year then it would be easier on him. Keep him here, well in Vancouver I doubt he wants to hang around in Fort St John although our Junior B team would be dominant, for a while then send him down if he isn’t up to it and call him up if there is an injury or he has earned his spot. He could still play at the world juniors if he wasn’t with the big club. I mean it’s just another example of the NHL being a poorly run league in my opinion.

No, but I’ve been following senior hockey for a couple of years now.
I've seen enough to know that I've seen too much.
That’s cool. It really is a high level of hockey. Lot’s of former pros playing for the love for the most part. I will say this about Bentley they had a good coach. And one of the nicest people I have ever met.

Yeah man those Sutter’s are salt of the earth guys. As much as I hate the Flames I can’t hate the Sutters. Super nice people.

I know FSJ isn’t a one traffic light town, but I used to work with the Schecks. Name ring a bell?
I've seen enough to know that I've seen too much.
I can count like 15 traffic lights off the top of my head without really trying. There isn’t a ton going on here but when the average make income here is 5 grand more than the provincial average you can see why people want to live here. The name Scheck doesn’t ring a bell at all. Hockey players?

Oh yeah well I am fairly new here so I don’t know many people outside of the Flyers and the Huskeis.

He stays, and he burns up a year of his contract. Worth it?
I've seen enough to know that I've seen too much.
I think it is yeah. I mean why worry about 4 years from now? He might not be playing hockey in that time. Maybe he breaks his leg and can’t come back. Or worse? If he can help this year then screw the contractual implications. Let’s ice the best team we can.
by Section 312 on Sep 23, 2009 5:59 PM PDT up reply actions
I guess 3 years would be when his rookie contract would be up. But you know what I meant.
by Section 312 on Sep 23, 2009 6:00 PM PDT up reply actions
Ice the best team we can. So, that being said, are we over-hyping Hodgson? Name a guy in the top 9 right now that Hodgson should replace or is currently better than. I can’t think of one. Not even Mason Raymond
by Sean Zandberg on Sep 23, 2009 6:03 PM PDT up reply actions
Ok I am going to get slated for this but in terms of ability to produce goals and play at BOTH ends of the ice and because of cap implications I would take Hodgson over Bernier and or Demitra. We would have more flexibilty financially and Hodgson can play at this level and he can’t bring much less offensively than Bernier. And I think Hodgson is good enough to replace some of Demitra’s scoring at a fraction of the cost.
by Section 312 on Sep 23, 2009 6:08 PM PDT up reply actions
OK, I’ll give you Demitra on that one…as a personal opinion. But the coach/GM wouldn’t think that way, would they? We’ll see.
by Sean Zandberg on Sep 23, 2009 6:15 PM PDT up reply actions
Yeah I doubt it. Wishful thinking maybe. I just think Hodgson’s development is a big time priority for us and playing junior is the last thing he needs.
by Section 312 on Sep 23, 2009 6:16 PM PDT up reply actions
I think
that would be a waste, he’s 19, he needs to play and a lot, in key situations, with quality players on a scoring line if you want to get the most out of him now and in the future imo.
Having him bounce in and out of the lineup on the 4th line doesn’t give him a fair chance to be the player he can be and imo adversely effects his confidence.
Give him a real opportunity and make it clear to him that he is allowed to make mistakes, I’ve always said you’ve gotta let your young horses run, fill their lungs and find their legs.
oh jeeze, I only get to watch for 40 minutes before I have to go play soccer.
It’ll be interesting to see how our line-up fares against the big boys.
Soccer over hockey huh. Man, you need to get your priorities straight! haha

Seriously though if you got even just one or two sections of hardcore Canuck fans that had season tickets and you were singing songs like they do at footy matches? Only in a building with a roof? No one would want to play us. That place would be a fortress.

by Sean Zandberg on Sep 23, 2009 6:38 PM PDT up reply actions
Someone once said about Football fans that when you sit at a match you sit alone but when you stand, you stand together. There is nothing like standing shoulder to shoulder with your fellow supporter, swaying and singing at the top of your lungs. And at the end of the match your feet are sore and you have sung yourself hoarse. Fucking brilliant.

All fields here are called ovals, now what’s up with that!
And cricket is also played an an ovalish pitch, I think.
by thelastjohnny on Sep 23, 2009 6:27 PM PDT up reply actions
Come to think of it, hockey’s played on an oval…
by thelastjohnny on Sep 23, 2009 6:27 PM PDT up reply actions
The answer is obvious if you know it. Australian Football was a game invented and designed to utilize cricket ovals during cricket’s off season.

It’s a big deal. Last year Powderfinger played before the game. They get over 100,000 fans at the MCG for that game every year no matter which teams are playing. I hope its on TV over here.
by Section 312 on Sep 23, 2009 6:33 PM PDT up reply actions
Yeah, if I was in Melbourne, I definitely would’ve gone to one of the games at the MCG. I hear it’s pretty easy to get tickets day-of, you just have to show up 6-8 hours before game time with 20 dollars. Now that’s a sport I can get behind.

by thelastjohnny on Sep 23, 2009 6:56 PM PDT up reply actions
Phantom two minutes? Seriously? The goal was scored to make it 3-3 at 89:58. The celebration by Bellamy was deemed excessive by the referee so he added all 55 seconds to the already indicated minimum of 4 minutes of added time. Plus there was a substitution which adds 30 seconds. That puts us at 95:25 of added time. The ball crossed the line at 95:26. Perfectly refereed.
